Why don't dragons shout?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 11:12 pm

I'd love it if a dragon could use Marked for Death, Unrelenting Force or Whirlwind Sprint. Not really, but you know what I mean.

The dragons do shout when they breathe fire. The shouting is most noticeable on the intro dungeon, Alduin shouts all kinds of stuff there. But I don't really notice it when they shout fire breath, hmm.

Could be you don't have your sound set up properly so you cant hear it. Like having the surround sound option on in your 360 settings and your tv doesn't support it maybe.

This greatly annoys me also. I mean, Paarthurnax and Alduin, some of the oldest dragons around...possibly even pioneers of their own language, have a max of 3 shouts they ever use. I mean really? Our upstart Dovakiin is better at the language than those who speak it every day? Come on!
How do you think English people feel when we hear Americans speaking our language?

dragons using slow time would be a cool feature to add, but no, I want dragons to be dragons really, and what dragons are supposed to do is breath fire, they already can breathe ice and shoot fireballs at you

Low-powered Storm Call on highest tier Dragons could be interesting - they must only use it once however, and it must not interfere with flame/frost use

Disarm could be used, but it'd be even more irritating than when Draugr do it

Dismay should definitely be used if it lands and gets mobbed by NPCs

Others just don't seem appropriate, maybe Animal Allegiance as they're supposed to have been ancient slave masters, you could argue that gives them a controlling power. Would also prevent Dragon death by bear

Others seem inappropriate to me, or they already have it. But yes, using more shouts could make combat with them more interesting. Another they could use is the shout the Greybeards use to create a fake version of them, confusing NPCs, but that'd probably be useless if they have dismay. Need to invent new shouts I think.

I agree with whoever made that list for the shouts that make sense for dragons, a lot don't make sense for dragons. The only ones I think should be in there are Disarm and Marked for Death.

You know I heard todd or someone from bethesda in one of the earlier videos that dragons use a shout to fly so there are shouts that not even the dovahkiin can use.and vise versa.

Dragons can't sprint.and if you mean fly faster what for? they already can cross half the map in a matter of seconds hell if you take your eyes off of them while in battle you would be looking up at the sky doing circles trying to find them or looking for the red dot on your map!.

Maybe Bethesda ddin't add disarm because it would make your one-of-a-kind Daedric Artifact go flying across the map.
In RPing reasons, maybe dragons realize that they need to hit you with the best they've got, knowing that Fus Ro Dahing you away is just going to help you escape or get out of their range.
Honestly if you are askign this question, you should ask why dragons even land at all, because strafing is the best attack style against unflying people

Good point. The dragon Ai, and Ai in general definitely need an overhaul to be less braindead.

That is indeed a good point and something that will need looking at once the CK is out. Their fight AI should greatly favor flying and strafing attacks vs ground combat if only for personal survival. Sure they're gods and invincible and all that but simple species preservation should have given them a preference for staying out of range from the pointy sticks of the grounded peasants.

I've been disarmed by Draugr Overlords. If they can do it, I see no reason why dragons can't. I'd say, dragons should not only have more shouts, but they should also have multiple shouts per dragons, and have more unique shouts you can't learn. I mean, this is the dragon language, and you're fighting dragons. I'd expect dragons to know their language better than some upstart mortal could hope to learn during the course of the game.

I hate disarm!!! I once was disarmed by a Draugr Deathlord and had to search aroun 30minutes for my weapon, because it flew somewhere on the top of the hall (had to use the console to get it back)

All these shouts and none of them really take advantage of their own language. It's said early on that a dragon fight is really just a battle of words. Why do they just shout fire/ice at us for the most part?

at lvl 39 i die almost instantly to ancient dragons and elder dragons easily from they're frost/fire breath. why would they change their shout style if thats the one that kills? dragons simply want to kill you, they arent going to fly around shouting animal allegiance, fire and frost are the most effective against the player. However there are some shouts which dragons Should use but arent really groundbreaking, Disarm/become earthreal/marked for death but even then those shouts are useless to dragons so

Even if the elder dragons are on the ground they can kill you with one hit with their snap attack. :D

Actually fire breath and Ice breath are shouts.Dragons can use more powerfull shouts than mortal races(i don't think that they need to wait the shouts to recharge).i think that dragons in the Lore are much more powerfull, capble of using a long list of shouts. But just as mortal races dragons are more and lesser powerfulls than others.
Spoiler
I'm sure that dragons like Sakhorlir and Ancient dragons can use Unreleting Force,Dismay and other shouts in Lore, but a dragon like that would be too hard to kill.
Spoiler
Let's not forget what Parthunaax and Alduin states "there's no diference between deebating and breathing fire for a Dragon".And "Force a Dragon to Land, what kind of trachery is that?".Some shouts were created by mortal races, and dragons can't use those shouts

If they used all the other shouts players would whine. Can you imagine getting feared or encased in ice and just plopping to the ground unable to fight back? Players would complain and Bethesda doesn't want little Billy to complain about his Xmas present.

Dragons being too tough is not a valid complaint for them not using multiple shouts. There are 5 difficulty settings for a reason, Bethesda seems to have forgotten that. Better that things be too hard, than too easy in my opinion.

Alduin uses two shouts during the Helgen attack Fus Ro Dah and those fireballs raining down from the sky is a shout used only by him. You also witness him shouting to raise dragons from Burial mounds. There is also a third he uses, but I haven't got the hang on spoiler tags
