Why don't dragons shout?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:56 am

All these shouts and none of them really take advantage of their own language. It's said early on that a dragon fight is really just a battle of words. Why do they just shout fire/ice at us for the most part?

They are shouting...

No they aren't.

They shout a fire/ice breath attack and then swipe/bite when they land. I've never once been hit by another shout (except for one very unique dragon) by any of them I've fought - over 30 including completion of the main quest.

Try turnign up your volume or use subtitles. They shout, all right.

I don't give a damn about their sounds. It's the lack of the actual SHOUT itself happening. I've never been disarmed by one. I've never had unrelenting force used on me by one.

Hell, the Draugr use more shouts then dragons do.

Hmm. It would certainly add an interesting dynamic to the Dragon fights. I fully support the idea of a mod that does this.

My apologies then

The title is not helpful, since what you mean is "why don't they use the full range of shouts". It would be cool if they were expanded, but I think they might have trouble aiming them and some wouldn't be useful. Still it is a great mod idea.

It would add such a layer of awesome to dragon fights. Instead of the following:

Step 1: Avoid or tank their fire/ice breath attack.
Step 2: Avoid or tank their bite/claw attack.
Step 3: Hit dragon until dead.

Alduin does a fus-roh-dah during the Helgen attack right when you're about the be beheaded.

He also summons the firestorm. Whoopity do though. There are dozens of other dragons in the game that do nothing else.

Yes they do shout but as noted only use direct damage fire / ice shouts. I agree utility shouts could be cool, maybe a new Dragon type that uses less direct damage shouts and is more a crafty debuffing Crowd Control type shouter that really screws with you.

I second that

This is something I have noticed and have been disappointed by. For all the work Beth put into the dragons they seem to have neglected the one obvious thing from dragon fights.
It'd be awesome to see a dragon use whirlwind sprint to make a bombing run on you

So instead it will be the same, but instead step 1 will be ''Avoid or tank their fire/ice breath attack or shout''? The dynamics won't change much, even if you add more shouts for dragons.

It wouldn't change if the dragon suddenly went into overdrive as he slowed time for himself, or disarmed you, or knocked you back 20 yards etc? Fights would be a lot more dynamic if dragons used a real range of shouts.

Yo dragons only have a few shouts but they do have them, and do speak them. Here are the main ones.

Fire Breath.
Fireball.
Frost Breath.
Ice Storm.
Unrelenting force.

Alduin however is unique and has many more than the lesser dragons.

I always get a kick out of learning all these dragon shouts that dragons don't use, too. Oh well, Bethesda needed to add some new combat ability, I guess.

The only shouts the Dragons have been given the option to use are as follows: Fire Breath; Fireball; Frost Breath; Ice Storm; and Unrelenting Force. You will only ever encounter a Dragon that specialises in using either fire or frost (plus Unrelenting Force for Blood, Frost, Elder and Ancient Dragons).

Breathing fire/ice = shouting. Granted, they don't use Throw Voice, but who would expect them to? What shout are you expecting from them that you don't get, besides maybe Unrelenting Force - which is so simple that the Greybeards give it to you for free?

Spoiler
Animal Allegiance - No. It's a dragon. it eats wolves, it doesn't make friends with them.
Aura Whisper - They know where you are in combat.
Become Ethereal - No. A proud, aggressive (I.E all, if you listen to Paarthurnax) dragons is not going to become invincible so he can fly away safely.
Call Dragon - Nope.
Call of Valor - Not applicable. Woo summoning enemies that would then try to kill you.
Clear Skies - the equivalent of dragon windscreen wipers. no.
Disarm - Not likely.
Dismay - There would be a case for using this on AI. But not on the Dovahkiin. It wouldn't be strong enough to mess with you.
Dragonrend - They can't learn this.
Elemental Fury - so the dragon can swing his dual-wielded axes faster?
Fire Breath - they do.
Frost Breath - they do.
Ice Form - plausible, but difficult to implement in Skyrim combat. if you're frozen, the dragon gets a free hit, basically ensuring your demise by the time you're on your feet.
Kynes Peace - yeah, the dragon will try and calm you down. wouldn't work, but it doesn't have to because it wouldn't happen.
Marked for Death - there's a case for this, but I don't think there's a dragon that suits it other than Alduin.
Slow Time - nope. it makes it easier for you, not the dragon.
Storm Call - yeah, a flying dragon wants to electrify the sky. No.
Throw Voice - ...no.
Unrelenting Force - possible, but as the Greybeards know this shout as well, makes sense for dragons not to use it.
Whirlwind Spirit - because the dragon wants to throw himself forty feet in a single direction.
