I like the world and environment that has been created in NV. My problem with NV is reconciling the endings with any number of possible motivations for the Courier. I think it was a mistake to make the Courier's background a mystery.
As someone said, the Courier is YOUR character, not what some designer decided what HE wants YOU to play.
The Lone Wanderer had motivation from any point of few, to act or not act, and he was young enough and isolated enough to truly be a blank slate from which you could believably see talents emerging and honing themselves.
Oh really? Lets begin ...
"I'm looking for my father. Middle-aged guy. Maybe you've seen him?
So were exactly is the motivation for that? what I always get is a character that loves his/her father
very much because I am not allowed to not care less about him.
Leading to Project Purity, I understand it might be a good thing if you dont mind waiting a few decades, hope that "Steel Be With You" remains at such and of course you give a damn about the place in order to actually want to help that place ... or you are a idiot and go spike it with FEV were then the joke is on you, in fact what IS the motivation (besides having a intelligence lower that 4) of doing so when you AGREE with fixing the Purifier before Eden decides to gamble on your character doing his bidding and it seems there were plenty of people that never played Fallout 2 ...
The Courier is a courier.... I guess getting shot in the head unlocks the potential to be the greatest baddest ever, including the smartest.
To start, it does give the character a motivation to search his/her assailants, unlike the Lone Wanderer that did it because "He/She Loves His/Her Father".
Also, what is the Courier's motivation to continue once he's confronted Benny and delivered the chip? People need strong motivation to keep putting their lives in danger.
Sawyer mentioned that initially you could at any point call it quits by going to the Mojave Outpost and pick a dialog option that was "I want to go back to NCR Territory" ... too bad it got cut.
So New Vegas did allowed to QUIT and the credits would roll but does not and guess what also does not allow you to quit? Fallout 3.
Also UNLIKE Fallout 3 were you really ARE doing it because of the "Kindness of your Heart", New Vegas puts you in a position were YOU have something to gain ... House, NCR and the Legion will ALL reward you greatly for your help.
If you played through to all the endings, the rewards are all pretty unrewarding.
Not as much as FORCED SACRIFICED BECAUSE ALL THE RADIATION IMMUNE FOLLOWERS DECIDED TO BE *****! and that is the Good Ending, You can say "oh wait, not going to die" and see it blow up or just send Miss Goody Two-Shoes in there to die (that makes you join your followers in the ***** club).
Since this General I cannot spoil the endings that I dont think are unrewarding.
I think only House offers a believable motivation and reward once he actually tells you everything.
Like he have a choice, also he tells you just what HE wants with a great deal of spin so you can help you because you know ... its kinda hard for him to do it himself (and that is why he needed Benny).
Unfortunately, one of the endings for the Kings implies that he's not as rational as he presents himself to be, however.
What? House is a control freak that enforces ABSOLUTE CONTROL over New Vegas ? *shock* Why? I never ...
COME ON! Just because you could not see what type of person is he does not mean the rest did not .
The free Vegas ending is practically trolling by the devs, especially considering what Yes Man's last remarks foreshadow. So you really only get to be a hero by helping certain people in certain ways, but with the major factions you're just a manipulated dupe who also manages to be incredibly powerful and/or intelligent.
WHAT? YOU CANNOT MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY?
You know what? You have to compromise as you CANNOT save everyone and perfect solutions do not exist ... that just shows how better is New Vegas as you are FORCED to make a decision instead of looking what is the "right" decision so everyone have a happy ending.
Also, that big battle everyone keeps talking about...yeah.
Because following the Big-Giant-Robot-That-Blows-And-Kills-Everything-In-Its-Path is so much better .... I remind you, this is FO3 vs FO:NV.
