Why am I forced to be a mage?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 7:01 am

* Beware: Possible Quest spoiler. *

I`ve been running around Skyrim as a dedicated Warrior, ignoring the MQ and doing my fighting with bow and sword.

Decided to do some MQ. Got to a point when I had to go into that Mages Guild. I was relieved when they let me in without me needing to have any magic powers, but then I find myself enrolled into mage classes as a student... Umm. Ok. I`ll pretend it.

And then he wants me to cast a Ward spell. I can`t, i don`t want to, I`m a warrior, not a mage, just give me info about my next part of defeating the super villain in the Quest, please. Enough.

But oh no, I have to learn a spell and cast it. They seem to totally think I`m a mage, even given me a stupid dress- I`m a Dragonborn, yes, I`m a warrior yes, i can give a big shout, yes... BUT I`M NOT A MAGE.

Why does Bethesda think we all want to be everything?

We don`t. Some of us just want to be one thing, one clear, simple class. And make the MQ allow for NON-Mages.

I just want to be a Warrior. Don`t force me to be a Mage to do your stupid MQ. I hate being a mage or casting spells.

But you won`t listen, Bethesda, will you? Too drunk with success to.

You're not forced to be a mage. You're not even forced to join the college. No one is forcing you to post this type of tripe. Yes, the main quest intersects the different guilds... but it doesn't require that you join them. You would be here complaining about how isolated the main quest was and how unrealistic is was that it didn't interact with the guilds if they had chosen to keep it seperate. You can't be pleased with what you have... you just have to find every fault you can, and post about them daily.

After gaining access to the college...
Spoiler
you only need to head to the Arcaneum and speak to the librarian there to continue the MQ. the rest will just advance the College quest line.

Also, behind the college there is a cave where you can climb to to get into the college without joining them. And the location the librarian reveals can be found by just exploring, which allows to continue the main quest.

Thankyou, ToJKa. I just wish this was explained in the game itself.

My apologies to Bethesda in this case. I can continue as a warrior, what a relief. the game was about to be shelved.

I`ll ignore the rest of you.

Same reason you have to:

become a Werewolf....

or a Nightingale (to Kill Mercer who you do not use any special Nightingale powers on to kill, anyway, and do not recieve until afetr he's dead)

it's written that way... but hey, they said we'll be able to play anyway we want, but unless you play their way (the Right Way - according to Todd) it will be messed up.

Cool overreaction, man. $16,000 says that's an exaggerated overstatement.

What in ***'s name are you talking about..?

You are required to join the College. You become an enrolled member.

Every time I read one of your posts it seems to be "Oh, you don't have to do that. You're not being forced." Than why is OP posting this in the first place..? You are required to join every guild you interesect with to some degree. It makes RPing while including the MQ a little difficult.

I also must say I hated that part with my mage hating Nord warrior. I just shouted at her and nearly blew her off the bridge (kinda funny actually). However once I got inside I still got the quest added to my journal to see 'so-n-so' an take a tour of the college. Seriously bad.

Why can't I just say, "Hey I'm hear to find out about the scroll, just tell me who to talk to. Here's a 1,000 gold for your trouble." "Oh, and by the way, if you dare ask me to cast some sissy woosy spell I'm going to cut you head off."

On a similar note, I hate the fact that you can not find all the shouts (or stones, or pieces of amulet) unless you join every faction in the game. As a heavy role-player I will never play a character that is great at everything as that just isn't possible.

Thank you, I totally forgot about that entrance, definitely will serve me if I ever play a non-magic character to that part in the MQ (the only ones I completed the quest with were already College members).

No, you aren't. You just have to try and find a way around. And there are some. No need to become a member of the thieves guild to find Esbern for example.

Thank you, I'm making a note of this. I am really not into the whole "be everything at the same time" approach.

It dose seem that this game wants you to be a Mage/Assassin/Warrior/thief. Its just as stupid as a Warrior having to stick his hands down peoples pants in the thieves guild.

My warrior "found" Signus all by herself, so I was never went to the college. She never talked to Brynolf, so never had to join the TG. Sure those thing's are because I knew how to get around them, I arrived in Riften late so went to talk to the female Argonian about getting a room and saw the dialouge. Knew about Signus from a previous character and went to see if that would work.

Noting the cave for any later characters...thank you!

No, but you don't have to listen to the random dialog of Nords for long to realize that, in general, Nords hate mages. Heck even the mages in the college recognize this. So being force to cast a spell can seem a little off.

As far as finding another way into the college. I seriously can't think of any way to not meta-game that scenario. Why would my guy be looking for another way in when there is a front door and he's not afraid of mages?

Bethesda definitely took away some of the players freedoms with these requirements (Trainwrecker made a good list). I just have to kind of close my eyes to these 'choices' as I play along. I guess maybe they thought the casual gamer would miss some of these cool things if they were not forced on you. (Casual gamer ... TES ... that was funny).

No there is not. Even if you use console to unlock the door, the whole dungeon is so tied to the College questline that progress is impossible without excessive console command usage.

My warrior uses a bit of healing. I never put any points in to Magicka or any of the magic trees but I had that one spell from the start of the game so I use it. It allows me to heal between fights instead of always using potions. It doesn't do enough to heal during a fight so it works out well. I figure some mage taught it to me at some point in my life and now it comes in handy from time to time. Kind of like Aragorn was a healer in Lord of the Rings if you ever read the books. So I used enough magic to get into the college, big whoop. It hardly makes me a mage.

If you aren't a mage, why does the main quest force you to join the college?

In typical beth fashion, the game is set up for those folks that want to be every thing, to everyone. Complete every faction, even if the two factions are diametrically opposed......
