Why Skyrim is a step backwards

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:54 am

Yes I appreciate the things that have been improved (graphics, character models, dungeon variety, puzzles, dialogue in real time, etc) I think too many of what has been good in the previous installments (variety of weapons, skills, spells, attributes; compelling guild questlines, healthy journal that actually works and gives you the info when you need it) have been cut or altered. I wouldn't say Skyrim is a step back in its entirety, but the RPG factor is clearly dwarfed by the emphasis on action and instant gratification while the true meaningful choices with gamechanging consequences are still close to zero.

People have the right to express their feeling. I myself liked Oblivion dungeons more. Maybe they were copy/pase but they felt darker.

UI is an improvement? Now that is BS. Not only it's buggy ( at least on PC ) but it also lacks tons of options and looks just awful. Also I couldn't imagine an RPG w/o some kind of a proper Journal, yet Skyrim managed to do the impossible.

Actually I (personally) think that the UI and Menus are very streamlined and "clean" looking. I like everything about Skyrim much more than I liked Oblivion.

i agree with the other people here who said that Oblivion is the step backwards, not Skyrim. Skyrim has raised the bar very high indeed for this series, and I can't wait for the TES VI because you know it'll be on the next-gen systems. ;)

I honestly laughed out loud when you said Oblivions dungeons were innovative and unique while Skyrims were cut and paste. LOL?

Never have I heard such an absurd and blatantly false statement. Every single one of Skyrim's dungeons are unique in design. Yes, it's the same atmosphere and textures, but all are uniquely crafted in their design and layout.

Oblivion's dungeons are truly copy paste, no uniqueness at all and once you do ONE cave, ONE elven ruin, ONE fort, you've done them all. This cannot be said for Skyrim.

Hi there Kal-El of the House of El! How have you been doing? Truly good to see youy!

What is this, the 187th thread where someone feeling nostalgic for previous titles rants about how they think Skyrim svcks because anything new and different is scary and bad? Give it a rest, or at least search the boards and add to an already existing thread.

I think Skyrim has its great points and a few that need work, but it is a step forward in nearly every regard. Additionally, I adore the interface now. So much simpler than Oblivion's. Ease of use, especially for inventory management, is something I greatly value in an RPG.

Well, I find it ironic whenever someone complains about this kind of threads being abundant but they fail to notice the apologetic comeback - which they perpetuate - is as frequent. I don't think people who have gripes about Skyrim get into conference calls and decide to take turns on posting a collective consensual thread representative of all the complaints. One poster comes here, he complains about this or that, another comes in later and complains about that, this and whatever, and yet another comes in and decides to post his personal view of why Skyrim fails in this or that department. Your perception of these seemingly un-coordinated atomized actionss? The proverbial "Peole love to complain". OT, I haven't played Oblivion but have watched a number of youtube videos. The landscape does appear to be lushier, but, then again, it's supposed to be that way. I wouldn't write down "landscape" on my to-revamp list for the next TES instalment. I think it's one of SKyrim's major achievements. Dungeons feel far far more repetitive.

By the Hist , Skyrim is the best so far , at least for me.

Today I played 16 hours straight , Went from Solitude all the way to Winterhold through the Pale.
It's amazing , all the ice , all the cold , it was really dangerous as I am using the Cold mod , after that I went from Winterhold to Riften , it was a really long journey but seeing every single rock placed perfectly made the ride satisfying.

Every single hold has it's own uniqueness which takes a big portion of time to explore fully , Skyrim is the best !

Oblivion gave us rolling landscapes and vast rivers and lakes, Skyrim gave us mountains and dragons.

Yes, because Cyrodiil is supposed to be mostly deciduous countryside. Skyrim is supposed to be tundra.

Here me out, I realize that Skyrim is the northern province of Tamriel and that is a harsh and in some places barren landscape, but I can't help but feel somewhat dissapointed with how the gameworld has been presented and for this is a huge step backwards in the TES series of RPG's. Oblivion was pretty, the forests vast and vistas awe inspiring. Yet climb a mountain in Skyrim and it's all a bit meh, the snow look's ok while it's falling but don't look down whatever you do as the ground covered snow looks like something knocked up using MS Paint.

Oh my goodness. So you're complaining about a landscape that is supposed to be barren, harsh, and cold. Next time I go to Canada, I'll make sure to complain to the local barrister about "the lack of pretty forests".

To me, Skyrim does have its own beauty, despite its harshenss. It's like a friend who comes across as mean, but once you get to know him or her, there's a sweetness behind that mean front.

In previous Elder Scrolls we had wonderful Elven ruins to explore, with gourgous lighting and atmospheric ambience but in Skyrim we have dwemer ruins and the same sound effects in each. .....

Oh my god. Play Oblivion if you're having problems with Skyrim! Me? I'm glad Skyrim is the way it is. Keep on doing a good job at landscapes, Bethesda...you're the best.

Gosh OP, I have to wonder if you are just trolling since everything you said is the exact opposite of the truth IMO.

I admit I miss the Elven ruins though, but that's about it.

In previous Elder Scrolls we had wonderful Elven ruins to explore, with gourgous lighting and atmospheric ambience but in Skyrim we have dwemer ruins and the same sound effects in each. What I'm trying to say is that Skyrim at times feels a bit cut & paste, where as Oblivion was well thought out and well implemented. The interface is the biggest culprit imo, which look's like something you might find on a mobile phone rather than the beaten journal you would find in the pocket of a wanderer in the Tamriel of yesteryear .

Take it back a notch next time Bethesda, keep it true to the elder scrolls, I don't want any fancy interface or silly dragons, give me a lush province to explore with my trusted crumpled journal.
I can totally agree with the OP take on the interface, but I don't see how anyone can honestly consider Skyrim's dungeons cookie cutter. Especially compared to previous titles in this series.

There may be other games with more unique dungeons and that are less linear, but Skyrim's dungeons are the best I've seen in TES so far.

I can see how the interface, factions and quest lines in general are a big letdown.

Good luck with that, because Hist knows, you'll need it :frog: but I doubt they would make the game that doesn't end well for the home population.

My Argonian ( named Viles ) is actually an Imperial war hero and came to Skyrim to retake the land for the Empire side.

Morrowind.

Their Triumverate of Gods that had kept them safe for millenia, two of them are dead. Society is in a shambles because of it...

Naw, they wouldn't repeat that... ;)

The forests in OB did feel more like...well...Forest to me compared to the forest landscapes in Skyrim. Probably because it was the only kind of landscape in OB.

I'd say Skyrim is a step backwards in certain things but definitely a step forwards in others (Even though Oblivion remains my fav). I think the faction quests have gone downhill in length and complexity, and quests in general are now mostly 'follow this arrow on your compass to x cave, retrieve something and go back to the quest giver.' I didn't really find any of the quests particularly memorable. I'd say character development has also taken a turn for the worse, as I miss not being able to out run people, be much physically stronger than anyone else, or be able to leap over the heads of enemies like a friggin' ninja.

On the other hand, I'd say Skyrim is a massive step forwards in the variety of dungeons, caves and ruins as opposed to oblivion. Combat and stealth is also much more exciting with the killcams, and spellcasting looks amazing. Another thing I'm glad of in skyrim is how you encounter more NPC's in the wilderness; it makes the world feel much more alive than Cyrodiil.

The environment IS kind of bland. Once you saw a piece of land from the top of a mountain, you saw them all.

Snow, snow, snow, trees, snow, bears, wolves, snow, snow, snow, mountains, snow, rocks and some more rocks.

Oblivion was the step back from Morrowind, Skyrim is bringing the series forward again.

When I read OP's post I was thinking, did he play the same game as I played?
I remember Oblivion, the first time I loaded up, the escape out of the prison, finding the first elven ruin thinking "oh my god this is awesome". The problem was that feeling faded soon once I realized how extremely similar most of the dungeons were. Saying that skyrim feels like copy and paste where Oblivion felt like well planned dungeons leads me to believe OP is wearing some heavily rose tinted glasses of nostalgia. Oblivion was a game that suffered from generic dungeons and a lot of copy and paste dungeons. By all means it wasn't a bad game it was fun, but Skyrim isn't a step back compared to Oblivion. Looking at the world in Skyrim it feels a lot more alive then Oblivion. Just how fishes swim the river and jumps the waterfalls, insects over water, more wildlife and overall a more dark and gritty world.

Skyrim isn't perfect in all aspects, they should have added more rpg features like a economy that felt alive and that you could change by your actions. More option on how to solve quests, more consequences and more guilds that would work against eachother etc. It is a step in the right direction with regard to the world design and such, but I would like that next game or future dlc adds to the NPC's and world mechanics to make it feel more alive and real overall.
