Will Bethesda Softwork be the last king of game developers ?

Rockstar.

Not unless they ditch GFWL and start making good PC ports again.

Three things:

1. Bethesda Softworks has never developed any game ever as they are a publisher. I think you meant Bethesda Game Studios.
2. Zenimax Media and its subsidiaries are relatively new to the mass-market development/publishing game and do not yet have the breadth or width to be considered a full fledged AAA house.
3. There is no such thing as "King of Game Developers".

Sorry, i of course meant the studio, and the post was meant to create some discusion. thereby i overdo it :P

well it turned into a Corridor shooter :D

That is what I did not like, i liked the RPG element in the first game.

Actually, Bethesda lost a lot of points with me with Oblivion. I don't think they are a bad developer, but they are clearly going down the seemingly inevitable path of "mainstream" developers.

I actually find that smaller developers can often times outperform larger developers in terms of gameplay, mechanics and even storylines in general. Many of the larger developers with highly successful titles often fall into the trap of simply capitalizing on a previous titles popularity. Dragon Age 2 is a good example. Taken by itself Dragon Age 2 is a good game. However, it pales in comparison to Origins. Dragon Age 2 wouldn't have sold half the copies that it did if it was titled something else. Most of the people bought the game expecting the next great Origins. It was not.

In many ways, I feel the same about Bethesda and Oblivion. They produced a game and sold it based on the Elder Scrolls title. It was a "good" game, but it also paled in comparison to the previous 3 titles in the series.

Arena , daggerfall and morrowind you mean ? , they where not as big as ground breaker as when oblivion came where they? that makes me wonder if skyrim have anything groundbreaking ? What do you think ?

Obsidian. I would rather have a great game that some people cant see becuase of bugs. Than a shallow game where people are blinded by hype.

WORD! Tough skyrim has a awsome poster (got one today)

Valve
Rockstar
Obsidian
Edios (cant hate some Deus Ex)
CD projekt
Just off the top of my head.

Oh man I love deus ex, human revelution did it so right ,what you think of the last one ?

Bethesda started losing me with Oblivion. Fallout 3 was better, but still lacking as an RPG, IMO. They seem to be making RPG mechanics less and less important, which is a sure way to get me to stop buying your RPGs unless you make up for it somehow. The RPG mechanics and economies in Oblivion were extremely unsatisfying to me, and after level 15 or so they seemed almost vestigial in Fallout 3. I know a lot of people liked Fallout 3 better than NV (and I'm not getting into that argument again), but I felt like Obsidian fixed a lot of the RPG system deficiencies that Fallout 3 had, which is one of the reasons I favor NV over FO3. I just don't get my RPG "fix" from games that don't have RPG systems that are meaningful and impactful on gameplay.

Now, I actually liked Mass Effect 2 because I knew ahead of time that it was going to be more of an action/adventure game than an RPG. I thought the RPG system in Mass Effect 1 was cumbersome and unsatisfying, so I wasn't sad to see it whittled down.

You can all argue over who the 'kings' may be, but indie developers are the unsung heroes.

I think that Bethesda is one of the few developers a dieing breed that knows what their gaming audience wants. Sony Online Entertainment was the king of the MMO world and knew how to please their audience. However they have just been hitting rock bottom lately because they are grasping at everything hoping to bring gamers back to them. EQ2 is one example where Smedly said there would be no micro-transactions in that game then 2 to 3 months later betrayed his word by introducing the ingame store. Sure they only had a few "Fluff" items however it became a slippery slope as they put in those XP potions.

Even now i'm hearing how some are disheartened with WoW and are starting to leave the game looking for something else.

I'm hopeful that Bethesda will stay true to the gaming world and like Nintendo I have a feeling they know what is going on. With Tablets becoming more and more powerful I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda is looking at making portable games for those things. Having the ability to take your game anywhere and prop it up on a stand then use a mouse with it is beyond godlike. Can just imagine playing FO3 on a tablet that takes up about as much space as a 1'x1' piece of thin cardboard.

You can all argue over who the 'kings' may be, but indie developers are the unsung heroes.

Minmax and Chillingo are two of the best unsung developers:
Chillingo has made Feed Me Oil, Cut The Rope and Angry Birds which are 3 of the best handheld games ever.
Minmax, a two person company, made Space Pirates and Zombies...play the game and tell me you aren't completely floored by that fact.

Of the big ones I have to say Rockstar as the definitive king and runner-ups being Bioware(to the void with all of you haters), Ubisoft, Nintendo, Bungie, Lucasarts and Bethesda.

There are only two companies I can currently think of that have not made a bad game:
Blizzard
Ensemble Studios(rest in piece)

Well I'd say Activision or EA is the king with all the money they pull in, but I don't know how many things they make themselves.

If it were up to me I'd say Nintendo is the very best. They have been making Mario and Zelda for 25+ years, not many can say that. There are also other titles that they have done really well on, so some can say Rockstar and there other things, but Nintendo has many years on them.

Some of my favorites include Rockstar, Ubisoft, and gamesas.

Just off the top of my head.

CD projekt's only made two games. imo they need a few more games like TW/TW2 under their belt before they can be considered for kingship in the developer kingdom.

The crown is surely in the clutches of the evil empire that is EA, having snatched it from the twitching corpse of Bullfrog years ago.

Valve are probably my favourites. They don't release much very often, but when they do their goods are well-polished and un-rushed. Bethesda are good, but I lost a lot of faith with Oblivion which felt so dumbed down and mainstream. FO3 restored some of that faith - I await Skyrim with trepidation.

Bulldust, they've never even been a prince. They're more like a duke, or a baron... plenty of dosh, not much prestiege.
