Will Bethesda Softwork be the last king of game developers ?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 4:47 pm

I have as many of you folks played a large collection of games throughout my childhood and up to my age of today (24) . And what is starting to be a routine now and not before is that games that was produced before , they bore more details than their after comers.
F.ex I was so looking forward to Dragon age 2 , and Mass effect 2 ... And as both games arrived i was equally disappointing in them both. I loved them of course, don't take me wrong. But I love a old school rpg, and old school rpg should not be something we forget to move on to games that can be produced faster, and not give us as much features that we remembered before.

Now both of the game i mentioned was of course from EA's takedown (in my eyes) of Bioware, and basically ruins the company hard earned reputation. I remember the fear of EA touching Bethesda to, but as I understood the had tried at some point but never succeeded ?
Other games that bear the same fate i am sure you all can come with examples of you're self, not only by EA's hand of course but by the requirements of games today.

But when skyrim now arrives, i notice they dowsized it a bit, but nothing i don't understand with the graphic update and their way of starting from scratch. Thinks like less caves , not as big map and so on. I am wondering if Bethesda will be the last game producer to put their hearth into the game and not their money into PR . Mainly because they do the right balance in using the old recipe with not to much new ingredients.
Any toughts ?

Edit
Sorry i meant the game studioe of course not the publish part of the company.

I've always had faith in Bethesda, and always will. They constantly deliver good games =)

I personally didn't like Fallout 3, but then again I didn't try all that much of it either. Though, a large majority liked it so it can't have been bad.

Edit: I used to think Square Enix was way up there, when I played Final Fantasy X. But when FF-12 came out, it dropped my belief in them massively

I'm not certain that I understand what you are saying...
The map in Skyrim is supposed to be the same size as Oblivion. There are supposed to be about 3 times more points of interest, MORE dungeons, MORE stuff to do. How is it downsized?

As for Bethesda being the Last King of Software Developers... video games have been around for less than 40 years. There is no telling where the industry will go or what bright new stars may rise. Bethesda, I hope remains true to its roots and continues to make mind bendingly awesome games for many years.

As I see it game developer are akin to the ayleid in that they have no unified king, but have many independent kingdoms. Interpretate that as you wish.

You must not be looking to hard to think Bethesda...no not even that, rather their are few "king" Game developers going about...and that others cannot appear. Barely ANYONE knew about Bethesda before Oblivion and Fallout 3. so please

Realize that it is taking a lot more time to make the games with the newer systems- there is a learning curve, even for the developers.

It isn't the same as making huge games with 2D graphics. :P

Once they get the hang of it, we will get longer games. But the tech has to meet it too. And then the developers have to be used to the tech. Bethesda has always been good about doing this with TES- as TES is always quite Overhauled. This one is likely one of the most like a predecessor (Oblivion) technically. So there should be more content due to that.

TES games are probably one of the series that is and has been the least disapointing when I consider all games. Most other games aren't all that great by comparison, and I have played a lot of them and usually play new RPG's.

I think all games are changes due to the fact that they are being designed for consoles now with PC as the afterthought (see the changes from DAO to DA2). I can't blame the developers for this though, just look at the Skyrim pre-order numbers and you can clearly see why. My hopes are that the next generation of consoles can complete head to head with the pluses of using a PC. At that point I may get a new console myself.

There's loads of great developers out there: Bioware, Level 5, Naughty Dog, Konami, Rockstar... The list goes on and on.

In no particular order:

- Valve [ Even whilst I don't get the hype of their games nor play 'em, they give back to the community. ]
- Bethesda. [ TES + Fallout 3 ]
- Rockstar [ Unique games and love RDR. ]

This was what i wanted to hear. A lot of meanings. Tough i grew up on fallout, so seeing fallout 3 and then the huge jump to fallout new vegas (that i know they did not develop, but they they produce it ? ) . I must then say i always loved bethesda, is their quality in games and depth that I do love.

Oblivion. It already happened with Bethesda, years before it happened with BioWare and others. Maybe they'll redeem themselves with Skyrim, but Bethesda lost its right to a crown a long time ago.
