Do you believe in the paranormal?

Post » Fri Jul 29, 2011 3:45 pm

Do I believe in ghosts? Difficult to say. I believe there's a lot we don't understand in terms of other dimensions. At the same time, I have a really hard time believing people who say they've had paranormal experiences. Most of the time, it seems to either be people letting their imaginations run wild, or people making stories up. Of course, this makes me a complete hypocrite as i've had several paranormal experiences myself...

Do I believe in aliens? Absolutely. There are hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with as many as a hundred trillion stars, many of which have planets orbiting them - and that's just in the observable universe. It's incredibly small-minded to think that our planet is the only one that has life on it. In fact, i'd happily bet my own life on aliens existing. That said, I don't believe in UFOs, flying saucers, alien abductions, etc. All of that is complete nonsense.

Do I believe in cryptids? Yes and no. I think it's entirely possible that there are strange animals out there that we have no knowledge of. When it comes to famous stuff like the Loch Ness monster or Bigfoot though, it's pretty much all in people's heads.

Do I believe in demons, gods, Jesus as the son of God, the Devil, heaven, hell, zombies, vampires, and the boogeyman? Absolutely not.

It's coincidental this thread has been opened this morning, because last night I saw an example that when it gets inside your imagination, it's simply there. There is an abundance of tales related to the place where I live: it's covered with hills, woodlands, marshes, old structures... Without going into detail, there are things that supposedly live in the trees, in the marshes, below ground, there are strange lights, spectral visions, things that jump on your back, people are still expecting the Wild Hunt to show up etc. So to pick up where I left off: I was walking someone home because she was too afraid, asking me to try and kepe her safe shoudl soemthing happen and she did claim seeing lights and things in the woods and the marshes. I guess it didn't help time was near witching hour. I do like to believe all of this myself, though I rarely get affected as much as I should. Perhaps these things respect Mj?lner pendants on people like myself. Folklore makes the world a much more interesting place.

No, I know a lot of people who genuinely do, but I won't until I see some real evidence. And why I don't trust personal experiences on their own is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfAzaDyae-k&feature=feedlik

Nope, there's a lot we don't know because we haven't figured out the right techniques to put the unknown in a scientific and factual context. Once the right techniques are found, things like paranormal activity can be written off as anything but paranormal activity.

I don't believe in paranormal activity, no. I actually feel quite strongly about this and enjoy a good debate on the subject!

Your house was having a sixy party with the other houses and it woke you up.

I'll assume it's for the same reason I'm up, right now (It's 5 A.M. here, as well). You have no responsibilities for today, correct? :P

No, but I do believe in bums or raccoons making shuffling sounds in abandoned buildings when they're woken up by someone knocking on the door.

Indeed. What's the first thing you think of after reading this story? Certainly not the paranormal.

Anyway, no, I don't believe in the paranormal.

Part of me seems to want to believe in paranormal stuff, but I have a huge built-in scepticism counterbalancing that. I guess I try to keep an open mind. I guess I tend to see "the unexplained" as "there is currently no explanation", assuming that the explanation isn't something obvious or there's nothing to be explained!

You may have seen this before, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T69TOuqaqXI is a very interesting, rational explanation of why being open-minded does not mean believing in the paranormal. It's tacky and looks very eighties, but the man makes good points.

In lieu of watching the vid (bad day for my concentration, as if it wasn't normally bad enough!) I didn't say I did believe: being open-minded is just what it is, and means I won't say "that definitely can't be the case" any more than "it definitely is the case".

I dunno, the rational part of my mind can be a bit too enthusiastic and will dismantle things until there's no fun left in it, so maybe I think it'd be nice if there were things out there that were immune to being disassembled in such a manner!

no
there are things we can't explain, we don't know everything but paranormal/supernatural are by definition things that don't follow the laws of nature
I don't think theres anything that exists outside natural laws, even if we don't know the laws that govern unexplained phenomena yet

On the fence. I think it'd be rather cool if ghosts exist, but until I see or hear one plain as day and I'm absolutely certain I'm not hallucinating, I'll continue to be a skeptic.

Saw my great grandmother feeling around where the windows used to be in her home, they were taken out when my grandmother moved in. Oh, and my great grandmother had been dead a good long while when it happened, that's probably the more important part of that statement. :D

I say if you don't believe in ghosts, take a two week vacation to Savannah, Georgia, your tune will change..... :shifty:

I am a firm believer in the bible, but also a firm believer in evolution. Therefore, logic becomes irrelevant at times, as logic doesn't solve everything like some people seem to think. The modernist would say "Love is merely an illusion of six." or, "Heaven is merely an illusion of happiness.".....but C.S. Lewis says "six is merely an illusion of love" and "Happiness is merely an illusion of heaven."

Nothing frustrates me more than "Can't feel it, can't see it, can't touch it, can't smell it, can't hear it, then it doesn't exist."

That i've never understood. How are aliens paranormal? They have just evolved and live on their planet like we have and do on ours.

Seeing as to date there has been absolutely no credible evidence whatsoever of ghosts, spirits, demons and other paranormal phenomena, I have to say no.

When I was a kid, I read about ESP, ghosts, and so on but now I don't believe in anything paranormal or spiritual. I don't even believe in aliens. If aliens do exist, they're so distant from Earth that we'll never know.

That's exactly the problem.
Given the size of the universe, it's almost certain aliens exist.
Given the size of the universe, we'll never know for sure.
