Can someone explain to me why Tiber Septim/Talos is part of the 9 in Cyrodiil but is no longer considered a divine and now its "the eight"?

I mean didn't Akatosh make him a God or something to that affect.

The Thalmor banned the worship of Talos as part of the White-Gold Concordiat (or something like that)

Basically a treaty made after the war between the Empire and Thalmor.

That's my very newbie take on it, anyway.

The Stormcloaks are using that as an excuse to rebel, being that Tiber was Nord originally.

The Thalmor made the Empire sign the White-Gold Concordat. That made it illegal to worship Talos. He's still Divine but it's illegal to openly worship him. Only true Nords still worship him.

Dunno, he looks all orcish. I'm a flame atronach.

Somehow, I think pain will be the dominating factor.

Edit: Wheeee 100 posts!
Wouldn't a dominatrix govern a relationship through pain anyway?
Congrats on 100 post btw.

Oh well that I know about. I was hoping it wasn't something across all of Tamriel. I mean geez this guy is legendary..(why do I get the feeling the TES series is building up to his "revival").

Now I feel bad for killing stormcloaks on sight. Oh well, I can't do anything about that(since they have KOS order on me too now).

That's part of the fun, right? And yeah, but I don't know if constant burning sensation is all that sixy.

As for going off topic, it is a troll thread anyway. D:

But Talos was a man. If a man can become a God, men are better than Elves. Take that!

That will serve that thalmor woman who told me she is superior and then attacked me! :swear:

Talos, Tiber Septim, Ysgramor is the same, right? He became the god of war and governance. So basically the Mer should worship him as well as the other eight Divines.

The elves don't worship Talos because he's an expression of Lorkhan, their eternal enemy. Lorkhan is the reason the gods physical forms died and became humans and elves. While humans believe Lorkhan did this so that people could experience the mortal realm as a way of enlightening them, the elves think Lorkhan tricked the gods out of their immortality. Talos was never truly a man. He's a shattered remnant of the "Missing god", the "Doom-Drum" that took mortal form. The elves are disgusted by the fact that humans are worshippong something that, in their mind, betrayed them

Oh, ok. Then whats the deal with Shor then? I thought he was the Nordic expression of Lorkhan?

Just started to try to get a grasp of the lore here :P

Ever wonder why you never see Shor? He's either another expression of Lorkhan or the idea of Lorkhan himself, probably the latter, a more powerful one than Talos. Talos is a part of Lorkhan that took physical form, Shor is just Lorkhan.

the elves just jealous cause men can become a god, and none of the elves have yet. Greedy bastards
Vivec, Sotha, Alma, King of Worms, Auri-el, some other members of the Altmer pantheon who I forget.

The elves only claim to be descended from the gods. Doesn't make it true.
It is is true, though. Nirn is made of gods, not matter, and all sentient mortals are just diminished pieces/offspring/creations of lesser numbers of powerful et'ada. And humans are too, and human also worship their ancestors, so you've got that wrong, OP.

You mortals always take things so literally.
Yeah, because the God of R.ape is totally a metaphor. And the thousand foot tall robot is metaphorical. And the heart of a god that creates a volcano is metaphorical because it's too far-fetched.

You're going to believe all that and then scoff at one god eating another? For [censored]'s sake, did you or did you not just play a game whose main villain is the World-Eater? Trinimac was 'eaten,' and there is a pattern in ES stories where this is meant to be taken absolutely literally, just like all the shenanigans of Greek and Nordic mythology. The metaphorical part is the symbolic meaning of being eaten and [censored] out, being totally degraded. And that turned his followers into Orsimer just like the Chimer turned into Dunmer.

OP: If you read the Arcturian Heresy (with a grain of salt), you will see that two of the roleplayers in Tiber Septim's composite identity were born as mortals. Only Wulfharth was an aspect of Shor, and in betraying him, Hjalti was acting as Akatosh and mantled him. Akatosh and Lorkhan are joined by the same mythic forces as Anu and Padomay. Talos symbolically harnessed those forces to bind three men into a single oversoul and ascend to godhood.

Woah calm down there cowboy, we're just having a friendly discussion haha. Anyway, some things in TES mythology are highly symbolic, and others are factual. It's a universe that's built upon both logic and poetic association. Perhaps he was literally eaten, or perhaps that's just a metaphor for something else, we may never know.

Now back on topic, you puny humans already worship the altmer, so just relinquish your lands to the Dominion and we'll consider not exterminating you. Thank you in advance.

If I recall correctly, it goes Ehlnofey - Aldmer - Altmer. Pretty much everybody except for Argonians were once Ehlnofey. The humans and elves have the same ancestors if you go far enough back.

Aldmer = "Old Ehlnofey" which is also the nickname of their mythical homeland, Aldmeris. The progenitor of the humans were the wandering Ehlnofey

There is some difference between the Aldmeri pantheon and the Nine, though I am not sure how much. One thing I am almost entirely sure of however is that the human pantheon is based on the fact that the gods created mortals, human, elf and beastfolk alike. The high elven pantheon on the other hand says the Aldmer, and therefor all mer, are decendants from the gods and so are superior to men.

So no, I do not see how the most common human pantheon suggests that humans should worship the Altmer.

First of all I'm kidding haha. Second of all men believe in the same creation myth as mer more or less, only that Lorkhan is seen as a hero for blessing humans with mortal life. According to in game books like the monomyth, children's anuad, lore documents, etc, humans and elves both agree to the same basic creation myth except for this fact. Also, the deities that would be known as the eight divines started off as the ancestor spirits of the elven elite. Over time, elves started worshipping them more and more until their ancestor worship turned into an organized religion. Humans have adopted these gods into their own pantheon. Their specific myths and tales and practices may differ, but at the end of the day many of the eight divines are the ancestors of the elves. Beastfolk are strangely absent from all of the above tales. Khajiit may be related to elves, but were mutated by Azura, which is why some of their tribes look identical to wood elves. Argonians are purposefully left out of the monomyth, because no one understands their place in the world or their religion.

Edit: Really though, those books I mentioned can explain it all better than I can, but men and mer agree that they're descended from the gods. The difference is the emphasis they put on it. Many casual chapel goers don't know or understand this fact. This nonchalantness goes back to prehistory, and is one of the original reasons for the tensions between the old elhnofey (Aldmer) and the wandering ehlnofey (ancient humans). The elves believe they've held onto their godly culture and heritage, while the humans accept their mortality and are trying to come into their own. The aldmer were disgusted by the fact that humans forgot their "heritage" and the humans were appalled that their brethren became so closed minded and cold toward their own people. The humans wanted to integrate into elven society, but the elves drove them off, and that's the start of elf / human conflict according to legend.

No, it's just that this forum needs to be more accepting of forms of expression not tailored to quiet time in a first grade classroom. The presence of the [censored] tag doesn't denote the intent of grave offense, nor court-ordered anger management class in the real world.

But it is a pet peeve of mine the way so many people pretend that Tamriel is a scientific universe that just happens to have gods and goblins and magic floating around. That's all completely believable and normal (because fifty years of Tolkien and D&D has rendered it comforting and familiar), but any appearance of actual magic at work in the world is treated like Jesus' appearance on a piece of toast, and everyone turns into rational empiricists scoffing at superstitions. It ignores the lore and is an active attempt to remove the wonder from art, the fantastical from fantasy.

That was a quote from Malacath in Lord of Souls, commenting on the story of his evolution from a pile of crap.
Then put it on quotation marks and actually say something about it. Like, 'this quote is one person's take in a novel written by a TES outsider that doesn't seriously engage with the topic in any way."

Keyes worked in close concert with Kuhlmann, who likes to inject doubt into understandings of mythic and supernatural events. It's his approach to showing how humans reconcile themselves to their strange world, but ultimately it's a coping device.
