Do You Roleplay?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 5:31 pm

As the topic said, I was curious to see how many people RP actively.

As for me I actively RP as it makes the game much more fun/challenging as well as increasing the replay ability of NV.

Also, feel free to post your RP Characters and builds!

Why is the poll multioption?
And yeah I started my first role the other day.
Of course, seeing as I don't play the game but rather let the character make his decisions it means that I probably will end up at lvl 20 something by the end of the game.
I won't go out and explore because that's not my characters goal and just cause "I" know there is a quest just over the hill does not mean my character knows it.
It's fun. :)

I'm not really sure how you could derive any sort of fun from this game without roleplaying...

YES

*The poll offers yes & no, but the voters all have differing ideas of what "roleplaying" actually means.
(I'm not suggesting any change, but the results are ~~ I don't know what the results are. :( )

I don't role play as in "inventing a role for myself". I play by the character build I choose and by the decisions I make, but in the end the role is always the "Courier"; as it was always the "Vault Dweller", the "Chosen One" and the "Lone Wanderer" in the earlier games.

Amen to that.

Currently I am playing as a former member of the FOTA who is somewhat of a pacifist, but will defend himself (unarmed) if prompted. He works for the greater good, often helping the NCR when they need it.

After that I plan on playing an ex-NCR Ranger veteran who is a true "Cowboy" type character and strictly uses revolvers, and lever-action weapons.

Depends. Not like how some people seemed to play Oblivion for example where they would meticiously walk in cities (cause who would run around in real life?), set up real "dinners" when they eat and all that stuff.

But I set up a character concept before starting. Sorta like, whether it's a very idealistic character. More geared towards talking or prefers a no bullcrap approach. Then I take the quests that feel natural to that character.

I do, but not serious roleplaying. I've always had trouble with roleplaying before (as I usually forget to eat and sleep like I'm supposed to) so in Fallout New Vegas I created Raize, an unarmed morally ambigious thief who can break the fourth wall.
Since I don't play with hardcoe mode, he always seems to find it odd that he never needs to eat and drink. However, he does drink Sunset Sarsparilla but only when he's injured.
This has led to him saying "Nothing a bit of Sunset Sarsparilla can't fix!" after drinking a bottle.

Im actually going to create a guide with some useful hints, tips and ideas for RP'ers, it should help out new players who want to try it out or provide some fresh ideas for those who are stuck in a rut

Yeah, I role play.
Heck, only the schizophrenic don't role play in a ROLE PLAY GAME!

Ya can't trust them sorts.
I mean, a RPG sort of screams "role play" don't ya know?
Yeah, it's those creepy Mt. Dew drinking and Dorrito eating sorts that ya gotta watch! They will knife ya in the back just to move on to the next flickering bundle of light and sound that they can say "I BEAT IT! I BEAT IT!"
Bunch of sacrilegious preverts if ya ask me.

Personally, I subscribe to the Lone Sniper theory: kill everything and everyone and take what you want.
Law of the Wasteland, my friends. Let those "factions" fight it out. I prefer to snipe each and every one of the lying wankers every chance I get.

I woke up to some old creeper messing around in my head and going through my stuff.
Doc just had to go.

I went on down to this broken down wanna-be town and ... heck, I got all involved in some rat-hole dispute!
Meh!

I got some guns and ammo and put a bullet or two in some old coot.

Time to move on.

Roleplay is a dying breed it feels. Seems like there's nothing but genius level misanthrope sinpers running around.

Seems like to answer the question you have to draw a line, where when you cross it, you are 'roleplaying'.

I am inclined to draw the line here:

Not roleplaying = playing the game purely mechanistically, your only objective being to 'beat' it, attempting to play it as a challenge to be overcome or puzzle to be solved.

Roleplaying: thinking about your character as a person and their motivations and emotions.

Under my definition, 99%+ of people roleplay :)

What are other people's definitions?

If I were to make a guide, it would be one paragraph, and simply say...
Consider the PC's background, consider their personal perspective and stated goals, and keep their ethics in mind. Temper all actions and dialogs with those things in mind. Voila ~ Role-Playing.

What are other people's definitions?
One popular definition is "class based play". This is the best way to play Oblivion [IMO]; and that is to act like a wizard, as opposed to acting like Gandalf the Grey, or Sauruman ~or Merlin (or Skeletor ).

**And (often) to play a Cleric (for example) as a person with Cleric abilities (as opposed to Cleric sensibilities).

(Basically, play one's self as a mage, as a fighter, as a mystic... Taking on the abilities of a class without the persona of one who is of that class, as many action stars seems to do ~Characterless or the same character throughout all roles.

First play through NCR scout sent to spy on Mr. House... Got the job to get the chip, and was about to take it to an NCR big wig when Benny changed his plans. (NCR)

Second play through Brotherhood member caught out after lockdown. Decided if the Brotherhood did not want her she would make her own way in the wastes... After reaching the bright lights of New Vegas she got hopelessly addicted to gambling, and when the choice came down to currier or prosttute the coin landed heads up... (Yes Man)

Third (future at this point only on second play through) play through is giving me a hard time. I want to play Legion with Raul as my follower. Was thinking about being an ex-Great Khan turned Legion, but the Khan's always watch each others backs so that part does not mesh well... Any advice here one way or the other would be great. (Legion)

Forth was thinking about doing a FoTA member who was close friends with Ceasar. Who gets so upset over it he decides his path does not fit with FoTA any longer so he branches off to exact revenge againts his old friend... and all those who have wronged the FoTA... (House)

As I said I am still kinda ploting the last two, but I could really use a hand with the Legion one. Just can't seem to find an angle that really meshes with them.

@ Gizmo, It will probably be a bit more in depth than that, like using in game techniques to enhance your game and the svck, not just the definiton on RP

This, and then players complain because the game isn't more like CoD and is too easy. That just really grinds my gears!

I guess I would define RPing as actively planning out your character before you create him/her and give yourself certain standards/morals/weaknesses etc... that they must abide to.

I had to vote What? because after spending some time in these forums, I no longer have any idea what is meant by the term roleplaying. There's too many different definitions!

What do you consider roleplaying?
If you have an answer for that and you play according to that then you are roleplaying.

Wow.
I'm not sure I would think that anyone who compares CoD to Fallout as anywhere near sane.
I LOVE CoD but it's an action shooter and obviously NOT a RPG.

Fallout 3 and Fallout:NV (sorry gang, but I never played any of the others!) are open ended (sort of! to an extent!) RPG's.
CoD in campaign is a linear game like all the rest. Cool as hell, sure, but still not at all in the same realm as FO:NV.

The PS3 has a game trying to mix FO and CoD ... it's called MAG and while I've never played it, it seems to be going down in flames. I'm sure there are tons of supporters but no strictly FPS game will ever get close to Fallout.
Oh, and by "Fallout" I mean Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. You old schoolers need to get over the fact that these two games are defining the franchise. The older games, awesome as they were, are now what they should be ... history and lore. Fallout 3 put this game in to a new era and FO:NV continues it.

All of this, of course, is just my half-cent.
