Ahhh... BBC news article on GOTY and PS3 glitches.

What are these game breaking bugs that are supposed to be in the Sims 3? Oh, the game was definitely broken upon release, but I've been playing for over a year now with no serious issues.

No, there's one game here: Skyrim. Across three platforms. A third of the game's user-base has been F'd in the B by an extraordinarily subpar product. The game doesn't deserve to be denied Game of the Year out of petty revenge, it deserves to be denied Game of the Year because a subpar product doesn't deserve it.

They want to give the Xbox and PC versions Game of the Year? Fine. But it doesn't deserve an award for the overall product.

It is in no way subjective to ignore the game's issues on the PS3 while handing out an award. It's willfully ignoring a major issue that's affecting a significant chunk of the game's players. It's great you're fine with that, but I'm not. To do so displays a massive lack of integrity on the part of those who put the award in Bethesda's hands. It's definitely not giving the company any incentive to properly fix their title (of course considering they never fixed Fallout 3 or New Vegas, I'm not sure such incentive actually exists).

Listen, I love Skyrim. When it's working as intended, it's a brilliant game. It was well on its way to being my choice for Game of the Year before it started to unwind. When the problems began to present themselves, it became apparent that this isn't GOTY material. There are a number of games on the market right now that do absolutely everything right (in terms of technology) that also do story and gameplay mechanics really well too. And yet Skyrim beats them? That's mind blowing. Particularly considering how much heat the title's taken in the last couple of weeks.
Do you have the scoring criteria for their awards? If you do and it includes scoring for different versions of the game then I'd be happy to change my statement. Especially if it is weighted in such a way that would have made a difference.

If it isn't included, and it probably isn't, then your complaint is merely that it doesn't account for all versions on all systems. I disagree with that philosophy. This is art. We're seeing three different pictures, two of them amazing and somewhat identical, one isn't even finished.

The problem is that we don't know that they will. If they posted on here the exact details of what's gone wrong and what their doing about it, then most people would stop complaining. Either they don't want to tell us what the problem is, or they don't know what the problem is, both of those are good reasons for the fans to be angry.

To be honest I think they just don't know, or they're content with how things are and it's got the back burner. There is the possibility they just don't want us to see them sweat, but that ship has sailed already. GoTY was a nice cover, but not all of us are that ignorant of the issues.

I agree, to let the PS3 slip through the cracks isn't a good move. We do make up a large number of the sales I'm sure. The fact people have trouble returning them is the only reason Bethesda didn't get hit where it counted. One factor that Bethesda doesn't seem to worry about, but they should. Future sales will likely reflect this. It would have been nice for Bethesda to compensate players by allowing them to return a defective game as a gesture of good will even if they can't release more information on what went wrong, etc.

You misunderstand me. For game of the year, games on different systems are each individual games because they each contain different code. There is no ubiquitous "game". There is the pc version, the 360 version, and the ps3 version. All different unless the code is identical. Three seperately painted masterpieces. One not being finished doesn't change the beauty of the other two.

Don't get me wrong, I'm upset. Right now I'm playing Red Dead Redemption for the first time while waiting for a meaningful patch (I have a backlog of games that I want to play). I'm just saying that GOTY doesn't apply to all systems because they want games created on single systems to also get credit if they are best.

The way Bethesda should be punished isn't by arbitrarily taking away GOTY. This game is incredible on the pc and 360. Either of those versions are legitimate runners for GOTY. If anything happens to them it should be to directly compensate us. Either by putting out a patch or some other means determined fair (trade-in, DLC, etc.).

Now, for developement team of the year. That's another story that includes the quality of their work.

Even with the bugs and glitches, this is still by far the best game released this year and deserves GOTY. Simple as that, I love this game even though it bugs or freezes at times, doesn't mean it still doesn't deserve GOTY. Even if they waited till 2012 to release it for a flawless game, it would mean any game released in 2012 has 0.000000001% chance of winning.

I honestly would like Bethesda to fix the issue with the PS3 copy before I sweep it under the rug and forget about the game. I am able to play the game still but as long as I dont play the game the way its meant to be, I cant randomly explore all the dungeons or my save will get too big for my ps3 to handle and freeze alot. I am planning to get Platinum with the way I can play it but the point is I cant play it the way it was meant to be played. I would like Bethesda to fix it so we can have freedom to play the game the way it was meant to be played like it was advertise to be. Its like getting an incomplete painting but we only get the important stuff painted on it with having no background to the figures painted in the painting.

Sorry if this is a repost but I haven't seen any mention of this review from Comics & Gaming Magazine: http://www.cgmonthly.com/game-reviews/ps3-games/754-the-elder-scrolls-skyrim.html

This is just the conclusion of the article so click on the link to read the entire thing:

In final anolysis, this will eventually be the game of the year for many, especially RPG fans, but my own experience of it makes me hesitate. For a AAA game that has had the benefit of years of development time, the bugginess of the final product is unbelievably high. Doubtless there are patches in the works and then it may be the game it was destined to be, which, on the Xbox 360 and PC would likely be a 93 score from me, but not for my review of the PS3 version. If you have the choice, this is a worthy addition to your collection if you own either an Xbox 360 or a PC. If you only have a PS3, you, as a consumer, will simply have to accept that Bethesda does not like you very much, but is hoping for your money anyway on a product that is clearly far more broken than it is for other customers.

The bbc didn't put this article up until exactly a month and one day after the launch date. Anyone think that's a bit suspect? Given that the return window is 30 days? Seems a bit funny to me.

Just a thought...

rhoobarb, I think you're going way to conspiracy here. I have friends that are reporters. For a story like this, it takes a bit of time to set up, especially at a place like the BBC. First it took 10-14 days for many people to start experiencing problems, and who knows long it took for those complaints to make their way to the BBC. Then, a sufficient number has to pile up so they can make sure it's not a couple of trolls or something complaining. Then a writer has to decide to write on it, pitch it to an editor, then there's the editorial process etc. I think the timing is nothing more than coincidence, otherwise you'd have to make a conspiratorial link between an American video game company and a British news organization. Thats seems a bit of a stretch to me. Back off the ledge and remove the tin foil :).

I wasn't saying there was a conspiracy, but it does seem a bit strange - the date of the article(and you have to keep an open mind rather than get walked over). And, I'm one of those sad barstewards that has to pay £145 every year for a license to watch biased stuff that they shove at their viewers.

Pretty sure we are allowed to question things in our head - if not in public. And, like I said, it does seem a bit strange. Maybe I should question nothing and just accept?

you do realize that bethesda didn't allow anyone to review the ps3 version before release right? anyone reviewing the ps3 version had to wait until the the game was released and buy a copy. bethesda knew what a mess the ps3 version was and they didn't care, they just lied about it so we would buy it.

Well, they still had a MONTH to play it, and they didn't reveal the crippling stuff till 12/12/11. Like I said I'll keep an OPEN mind rather than a closed one.

so you would rather they played the game for 2 hours then reviewed it instead of actually playing a good portion of the game?

Did you miss the article title or something? The only reason it made the news was because of it being awarded GOTY, TWO DAYS before the article, it's not unreasonable to suspect that the BBC took a couple of days to research the article before posting it, far more reasonable than to jump to conspiricy theories about the BBC.

So you are saying - since november11/ 2011 they have had only two hours to play the game? What! - not much of a review then is it. They definately won't suffer any bugs if they only played it for 2 hours over a one month period. This is starting to get a bit farcical. Within a month you can play a good portion of the game, being as their wages are paid by taxpayers then I would expect them to review properly. Especially with the tv tax, which as I already said was £145 a year.

Sigh, look I know that right now Skyrim seems like the biggest deal in the world to you (and it's a pretty big deal to me), but to the non-gaming press this isn't exactly issue #1 being that there is a global recession and natural disasters etc. Just calm down, the BBC reported on it, be happy with that.

Wait what.. Did they advertise the game as "not being finished" ? Did they charge me full price for this "unfinished" game ?
Why should they win an award for releasing a completely broken or "unfinished" game to a large portion of its customer base?

Your strange logic implies that we somehow don't count in the big picture. In the world I live in people shouldn't win awards for continuous shoddy workmanship, poor customer service and false advertising.

Don't get me wrong , it's a great game when it's working. But it isn't working. It's currently unplayable to (if we go by IGN statistics) thousands of people who were made to believe their version was a fully working version.... and then what if they don't ever fix it?

They can have their game of the year award once they've fixed it. They can have their developer of the year award once they've appologised for their mess and refunded everyone who has a broken unplayable version.

oh wow, this has got enough attention that now BBC is asking questions. Considering that the BBC is the main broadcasting channel in the UK, this is a pretty big deal. Also it seems BBC got in touch with Bethesda too, so Bethesda will definitely be aware of this.

"A spokesman for Bethesda told the BBC that the firm did not have any information to add beyond what was on the blog at this time."

Not sure where they get their info from.. "saved games with 20-50 hours are suffereing lag" umm that is BS, most people who are reporting problems have clocked up close to 100 hours or more! I myself have logged 90 hours and still haven't run into this dibilitating lag that apparently '1 third' of the population are getting, I would also like to see where they got this figure from, very interesting! My MC is level 32, 90 hours in, haven't even started the MQ yet, only one hard crash and a couple of graphic glitches which dissapear when you enter the area next time, no lag issues yet either.

Strange that everyone is using the same hardware yet everyones experience varies! I could understand if it was on PC because of the hundreds of different configurations hardware and software wise but its strange to see on a PS3 tittle!

gamebryo at its finest!!!!

indeed! Gamebryo v2.0. Doesnt really deserve to be called a new engine.

My first file ( after 1.1, before 1.2 ) started to show signs of lag in cities at about 30 hours in, started lagging in world map about 45 hours in. Cities showed heavy lag about 65 hours in (after a certain amount of play). About 3 freezes throughout the whole game which wasn't too bad.

My second file ( after 1.2 ) started showing signs of lag relatively early around 15 hours, by which the game froze regularly every hour or so. This is when I shelved the game hoping not to ruin my experience and my PS3 any further and I am now waiting for patch 1.4 at least until I start playing again.
