Anyone else wish Skyrim were... more racist?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 10:46 am

When in windhelm as a dark elf you should only be allowed to live in the grey quarter and shouldnt be allowed in any of the nord shops or the candleharth inn because you are a dark elf.
Currently people talk about dark elves as if you aren't one. They say "those dark elves" instead of "you dark elves".
Also argonians should have to keep out of windhelm until you do a quest to persuade Ufric that you aren't mere animals. Same goes for Kajhit (however you spell it). I thought they werent allowed in nord cities.

this.

that drunk nord who gos down the grey quarter at night to abuse the dark elves said to my dunmer something insulting about "those elves".
so i waited in the shadows and slashed his throat .

i do wish there was more racism. not saying am for racism in the real world or nothing befor anyone starts lablein me. what i mean is the nords are suppose to dispise elves but we dont reali see it. or dunmer and argonians, i think its safe to say they hate each other but we dont reali see it.

There's some pretty funny stuff in this thread :-) Anyway, I personally feel that oppressive racism is becoming a little bit too much of a "must" lately for any fantasy setting that wants to show that it's serious and "mature" (Dragon Age, The Witcher). I'm getting a bit tired of it, really. It's not like racism is actually entertaining or anything. I guess it makes sense that it plays its part in Skyrim but I'm happy it's not too rampant because while it may be more realistic, I don't think being hated for your ethnicity, religion or customs adds all that much to the experience.

I have one exception :-) In Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, playing as a Nosferatu meant being so hideous that you couldn't show yourself in civilised society. That did add a certain something more to the game but I guess it also had a more romantic/gothic quality which made it work.

Ulfric Stormcloak is a bloodthirsty racist. That's why I'm with the Imperials.

Hi all,

BGS are a US AAA company. If they tried to be remotely realistic re racism, interrracial relations, gender specific differences between individuals, sixual leanings and what not they`d be sued right and left until bankrupt. Kudos to them that they actually dare have some pseudo-racism in the game at all.
Witcher series had to be watered down considerably for the US market. US ver is quite different from European one.

What would be the reaction to the game in the US if the Nords drowned homosixuals in bogs like RL vikings did?

That said I`d like to see much more gender differences in the game. `Cause RL Old Scandinavian society wasn`t racist. Any able-bodied male with basic scandinavian language skills could apply for membership in a viking outfit.

Haelga and her sixual deeds are pretty much spoken of in such shallow hints that she may as well just say, "I worship Dibella for the sixual part of it!" Just look in her room. Morrowind had slaves in it, by the way. There's plenty of interracial stuff, just not as much there as it was in Oblivion. You can be homosixual in Skyrim, as well.

Yes actually, although I hate getting into Windhelm when playing a Dunmer... I wish there were more requirements to get into the cities... playing a Khajiit nobody ever called me filthy pickpocket just by the sight of me, and even though Windhelm nords can't stand the Dunmer, I can even get a room at the local inn. Id like to see more struggles... like that racist beggar from Windhelm with a few guards dragging people from the Grey Quarter, but I know its very complex to implement but would be cool to have a more varied behavior and move animations for NPCs.

I'd love to see that racist beggar get his head cut off, and his entrails eaten by the other beggar. He doesn't deserve to live.

Hi Klawed Flaw,

sure you can be a homosixual in Skyrim, only the guards won`t throw you and your partner, if discovered, into the nearest bog as they would in viking Scandinavia.
That would be epic actually if this could happen in the game. You pay the full price for breaking the law, Dragonborn or not. Actions actually do have consequences, only not in BSG games, sadly.

So even if some things are hinted, they are so watered down and inconsequential they just bring out a wry smile.

I think just people really recognizing your race would be nice. I hate when other Dunmer feel the need to tell me about my own people as if I don't know what race I am. Skyrim is the same in Oblivion, unless it's random dialogue the characters just treat you as a blank slate no race, just gender. Makes multiple play through feel really meh.

Nirn=/=Earth. As far as concepts like sixuality go the people of Tamriel have varying views on whats considered wrong though most have a fairly liberal outlook. Really wouldn't make any sense for the guards to drown you for something that's against the law in an entirely different universe. I agree with the sentiment in general though, there's a huge disconnect between the player and NPC's that makes it more difficult to immerse oneself.

This, but I am an imperial.
I would like more racism, I've always played an imperial, would give me a reason to change the field,

Sign me up as a "Yes" to this. It bugs me, as a Khajiit, I can walk into any city in Skyrim while my race is forced to sit in tents outside the city because of bigotry. It makes absolutely no sense.

At least in Oblivion, Khajiits were allowed in the city.

Hi One-Niner,

you`re quite right abt. Nirn being a different universe. Only it`s still a modified Earth. On Earth not everybody likes negroes, not everybody likes whites, not everybody likes christians, not everybody likes lisbians, no one likes gypsies. These conflicts fueled by dfferent reasons are general for most if not all societies, leading to discrimination, persecution, murder and genocide. If Skyrim were to be plausible, you would have either to choose a side and accept or even work to further their particular prejudice(like say, Vigilant of Stendarr also eliminate unsound sixual preferences) or stay neutral and probably become an enemy of all.
I`d like a game like this where moral choices are hard and may lead to tragedy but I fully understand why BGS can`t make one.
My hope stays with the modders.

I really liked the racial and faction reactions of the older games. They just made sense and added to the role-play.

Role-playing, seems to be something Bethesda completely forgot about while making a game that CoD players would love. Never before have I had to work so hard to role-play in a role-playing game. I used to love playing the odd ball characters, the Nord mages, the Orc rogues, the Breton warriors, but now all the races are so vanilla it doesn't matter anymore. Now I have to pretend it's hard for an Atlmer to be a warrior.

Stormfront loves Skyrim. That's not enough for you?
Who cares what they think? And how do you even know this?

A Dunmer is working as a bard in the tavern. Why shouldn't you get a room?

Honestly these threads wouldn't bug me if people would just pay attention to anything but the first cutscene. If you've played a TES game before, you should know that "the truth is out there" but you have to dig deeper than that.

Note to Everyone: The title is a hook. My plea is for players race to be taken into account along with NPCs; not actually making the game "more" racist then it currently is.

Discuss.
