Appealing to the masses...

To be honest, there's too many examples of this I can't even name any...

Yeah but at least Load and Re-load still had solos. St. Anger didn't even have that, granted some of the songs were catchy but I like my Metallica with solos.

True. And over the years Load and Reload have managed to grow on me. I think what attracted me to St. Anger, was that they got some of their aggression back. But they're still not the same. But I'm not the same either. So, meh, whatever.

I still don't like it.

Command and Conquer series...although I'm not sure EA ruined it to appeal to the masses, or ruined it because they could, or ruined it because they're BAD.

Oblivion a little bit. But how can anyone judge Skyrim yet? Seriously, that's impressive, have you have a sneak-play-view?

IMO Mass Effect 2 wasn't dumped down, but shifted to the other direction. Combat is lot more complicated, and still a shooter just like its predecessor. It's overall character depth and plots are far cooler than Mass Effect 1. ME 1 is a congregation of super cliche, ME 2 is a cliche made supercool. Reading ME1 dialogues bring me back to cheesy soup opera, reading ME 2 dialogues bring me back to Bladerunner, Shadowrun, Gamma World those kind of super cool classic cyber punk.

Combat wasn't more complicated, it was dumbed down to mind numbing proportions. You dont even have to think in ME2. Just cover/shoot/cover/shoot/cover/cast, over and over again. EA turned Mass into a GOW linear POS. ME2 was the cliched one.

Fallout 3.
Sure New Vegas is a good Fallout game but the franchise will never be the same again due to that horrible Oblivion mod "Oblivion With Guns".

Other than that I guess it's Dragon Age 2.
Sure the franchise just started but the first game was really ace and then the second rolls out and I'm sitting there going "what the [censored] happened?".

Can't comment on Deus Ex until HR comes out.

If we consider IW as the current state of the series it can't possibly be worse. :P

But yeah I'm worried...

Can't comment on IW either.
I played it for like an hour or so before I changed to Fallout 2 (again.).
I don't remember enough to say if it was good or bad.
Since my computer is [censored] I can't play it as I can't find the xbox version at my local stores nor CDON.com.
It'd be unfair for me to immediately say "oyeah, IW svcks" before I've actually played it.
So I'm going to ignore IW and compare DE and HR instead.

Call of Duty.

I remember when there was at least a two year distance between the games, but after Modern Warfare the series went downhill. It seems like now, Call of Duty is only popular because of zombie, which is extremely sad.

Shadowrun for sure. It exemplifies the notorious streamlining of this generation by a massive margin compared to any other sequel/remake. They took one of the most classic RPGs and turned it into a multiplayer action FPS.

When you say, "Shadowrun" are you talking about the SNES and Genesis games, or the huge PnP RPG world/system they were based on? The old console Shadowrun games were ok, but IMO nobody's ever made a great Shadowrun video game. I find it pretty odd, really...it's a really ripe setting for a good cRPG or MMO.

Any X-COM fans here care to talk about the reboot? ;)

Sounds pretty bad. Then again, it doesn't promise anything either.

Both Infinity Ward and Treyarch do them every two years. MW2 was IW, while Blops was Treyarch. There still is a two year distance, they just get the b-team to make them more money. As much as I miss Stalingrad, I think the new campaigns are way better.

I thought it was cancelled... I wish it was.... Most likely be a miserable failure and available for 4.99 inside 6 months.

I sort of lost track of it after some early magazine previews. X-COM was about the gameplay more than the setting, so doing a reboot of the series with completely different gameplay seems odd to me.

I felt that ME2 was overall a huge improvement. There were many classes that could suit any playstyle. I despised the combat system in ME1. Clunky controls that consisted of running around and shooting anything that moved and every class felt way too similar with little variation. I do miss the long list of skills, though I guess it's worth trading over for evolved and more unique skills. I'm really just hoping they take the best of both worlds and add even more in the upcoming sequel.

Dragon Age 2.

Fable series.
Sims series.

These. I also don't like the direction the Old Republic and Warcraft series have gone.

Its basically all of the same skills, just a few variations. They just made 2 into an action game with no strategy. I never had to think and I never died in ME2, unlike in 1 (and that was on hard).

No strategy? You had to command your squadmates to take cover in ME2 or you'd be screwed, in ME1 all you had to do was keep firing.

There was more strategy in 1 than in 2. ME2 strategy consisted of a rock/paper/scissors armor mechanic and unlike in 1, you didnt even need your teammates, other than the scripted ending. I didnt even come close to dying in 2. It was cover/shoot/cover/cast/shoot etc. spamming the same skill over and over again.

Or how about George Lucas and his SW prequels/Indiana Jones sequel?

I think George Lucas was trying to appeal to George Lucas. "The masses" were thoroughly unimpressed once the CG wow factor wore off.

On the subject of Star Wars, this seems to be what's happening with the KotOR series. Once a single player game, it has now become exclusively multiplayer with a subscription fee. Not only would I not enjoy it if I did play it, but I couldn't afford to if I wanted to. Good going Bioware. I hope your game bombs.

I never needed my teammates in ME1, except as decoys.

Silent Hill series. Down the [censored] drain. The newer games just lack that atmosphere 1-4 had. And yes, I think 4 is one of the good ones.

TES. I'm extremely worried about the direction TES is going. Ever since the series began, it's been on a perpetual cycle of streamlining, with Oblivion being the worst of it. Now, I hear Acrobatics, Athletics, and Mysticism are taken out of Skyrim. What the [censored], I wanted the stuff that was ditched in Oblivion back, not the other way around.

Civilization. Wow, that series got screwed. I did some pretty thorough research, and Civ 5 is easily the most dumbed down of all the games. I genuinely feel sorry for the long time fans of that series.

Goodbye good gaming.

Not gone yet, just slowly dying of leprosy and brain cancer.
So I expect maybe a dozen or two more good games before every game becomes dumbed down and generic.

Mass Effect 2. There is an interview with Bioware on xbow live, where they as much as say that they ruined the series with 2 and hope to redeem themselves with 3.
