Civilization. Wow, that series got screwed. I did some pretty thorough research, and Civ 5 is easily the most dumbed down of all the games. I genuinely feel sorry for the long time fans of that series.
I really don't get what's supposed to be so "dumbed down" about Civ 5. A few stats are rolled into one and are still raised through the same means, features which were added in the expansions to Civ 4 (and mostly just bloating it) were gone again, and suddenly it is "dumbed down"? Then why is the military part finally not mass of stacks of nukes any longer, easily making it the least dumb of the series, if the game was supposed to have been "dumbed down"?
Anyway, the game definitely has problems, but most of them are due to the rushed release and have only been slowly ironed out until this day.
I sort of lost track of it after some early magazine previews. X-COM was about the gameplay more than the setting, so doing a reboot of the series with completely different gameplay seems odd to me.
2K at least seems to have received the message. Since short news about the devs planning a greater revamp of the gameplay after negative reports, there's not been
any news at all from down under. I sure hope that means they plan for a massively more tactical game to show the next time. I could manage with an X-Com reboot as a shooter, but please, don't make it such a straight-forward rip-off of BioShock 2, which itself felt more like a rip-off of the grand game before. More tactics, more base, and for crying out loud, more actual X-Com aliens.
