1.8 Beta Update and Dragonborn DLC hints discussion

Post » Tue Oct 16, 2012 9:23 pm

Though I am cautiously optimistic it is Solsthiem, maybe after a official announcement I will give the fans who are new to TES a tour of Solsthiem via Bloodmoon so they can get an idea of it from a player's perspective by taking screenshots of places and people. How does that sound?
I would actually like to see some user screen shots of Solsthiem, I never played Morrowind and would love to see some good pictures of it.

Throwing, but also an effective thrusting weapon. when coupled with a shield. The Phalanx.
The Halberd was a spear with a blade on it for slashing.
They were good for keeping your opponent at a distance.

Gotcha - so a thrust-style weapon used similarly as a pole-arm then in the previous ES games I take it. Thx. ^_^

For the record, they were in Morrowind, but not in Oblivion (Not sure about Arena, Daggerfall, Redguard, Battlespire, or Shadowkey)

Like I said, they were used as melee weapons. Same with Halbreds.

I think spears and halberds would require a skill tree of their own (which I would support). They're just handled too differently (though I could see the justification for halberds simply being treated like battleaxes.

It was probably just a moderator or a forum admin. I don't think Todd even visits these forums anymore.

Well, explain to me how you see these spears working then. I'm under the assumption you're talking about spears that you throw... that is what spears are for.

You were mentioning the movie 300 - I believe they were using Pikes and Haliberds... a WHOLE different sort of animal altogether than spears.

You do know spears are used as melee weapons too? Spartans used them as melee weapons and throwing weapons, as did many greeks. The macedoneans I believe under Phillip II, Alexanders father, were the ones to use pikes, not spartans. And they definitely were not using haliberds.

The glass battleaxe actually reminds me of the glass halbred from Morrowind :D

What was this thread even about? I got here at like page 3 and posts are coming in at like 3-4 per minute.

Edit: I played it risky and peaked back to page one. Looks like it's some sort of DLC speculation and rumors.

I don't like speculation. Not just for DLC, but when it comes to anything really.

It's a spam thread thinly disguised as discussion of Dragonborn.

You throw spears and javelins (axes too if you are norse xD), but Spears are mainly for thrusting and stabbing and are the core of every medieval/ancient army, MUCH MUCH MUCH more than swords
pikes was most an anti-cavalry weapon i believe, that was discarted to the real fight after stoping a cavalry charge (if it have not broken already), since due to their LONG range they are
almost impossible to wield in a fight pushing it back and thrusting in the enemy (the work of spears :3)

You're probably right. Unlike crossbows, they've got pretty much nothing like them in the game. Guess that could be a 7th skill :D

Was originally used to counter the phalanx used by the greeks. Phillip thought. How do I defeat a tight formation with big sticks? Get bigger sticks! And cavalry. Men dont do well on foot against cavalry..
