skyrim is no better than oblvion and they made it sound that way.

1. them: more variation in NPC's. Me: bull crap have you tried hunting someone off description yea let me guess he was about 6ft had a beard was white and had iron all over him

2. way less armor than past games i mean really all i ever see is iron and steel. yea i know we are in skyrim but still.

Those are opinions, not facts. Each NPC has a huge variety of facial differences for their race, different voices and unique dialogue. To me that's a lot more variation than potato faces NPCs, where every member of the same race sounded the same and looked the same.

And armour was confirmed to be condensed way before release. I wouldn't say there's less armour. People wear common armour more because it makes sense. Oblivion's level scaling made it so petty bandits wore daedric by the end of the game, that's just ridiculous. Now bandits wear iron, with the leaders wearing steel/plated. I really don't see how that's a disadvantage against the game. There's still a huge amount of variety the player can wear, you know, being dovahkiin and all.

After playing it for a while and accepting it for what it is, i can safely say that it is better than Oblivion.

NPCs were a big plus in this game from Oblivion, with one exception: overall recognition. The dialogue options when they greet you are pathetic. BUT, that's my only complaint.

I've seen low level bandits wearing hide, leather, fur, iron and steel. Wait a few levels and more variety appears but as SomeWelshGuy said never to the extent that Daedric and Glass are virtually standard for bandits.

Overhyped? I don't think you know what that means. Next week you'll be back here complaining that they don't communicate with the community.

Including Shivering Isles Oblivion had 17 voice actors, Skyrim has over 70.

There's no need to swear.

Every single person (bar a handful) of the same race in Oblivion shared the same voice. In Skyrim, people of the same race look and sound different from each other. Oblivion had less than 15 voice actors, Skyrim has 70. Whether or not you think the voices suit the characters is another thing, however there is inarguably more voice and race variation than there was in Oblivion.

I thoroughly enjoy Skyrim. I haven't noticed a single thing missing that Bethesda said would be in the game. In fact I was even surprised to see some things in the game (horses) that I felt were not going to make it.

I have said this before, but I will say it again :
Hype? Did we get the game they promised us with that first trailer of horned helmet Nord guy versus the dragon? Absolutely.

NPCs are more varied than Oblivion, but Ob's were almost caricatures, so maybe easier to notice the differences.

Base armours :
OB : Fur, rough leather, leather, chain, mithril, Elven, glass, rusty iron, iron (yeah, pushing it with those two and the leathers), steel, Dwarven, Orcish, ebony, Daedric. That's 14
Skyrim : Fur, hide, leather, studded, scale, Elven, glass, dragonscale, iron, steel, Dwarven, steel plate, Orcish, ebony, Daedric, dragonbone. That's 16, without uniques, Stormcloak, Imperial, Forsworn, or variations with pauldrons.
So, less than Morrowind, but more than Oblivion.

To be Devil's advocate, what is really missing that was promised is a working economy.

Over-hyped? Look up Fable, then reconsider. =p

I got exactly what I was expecting when I bought Skyrim after reading the ads and watching the trailers.

I think that Skyrim improved almost universally on Oblivion. The gameplay is more fun, there is significantly more variety, the visuals are distinctive and stylized, people don't look like dough, there is geographical variation, period, various playstyles feel distinct, and the plot is rooted in the series lore without being a load of fanservice wankery. Win.

What about stacking snow? Didn't they promised that or was it just the hype-robots on this forum who left that expectation?

I do remember Todd saying that he liked the tavern brawls. But maybe hes just very easily amused.

To be fair, some things were underhyped. Finishers for example, and the size of the world.

They promised dynamic snow, which does happen. Nothing about stacking.

I still find it hard to believe that people are mad because the marketing division did it's job correctly, no matter what you think of the game you cannot argue that the guys in marketing did one hell of a job.

Games get hyped. It happens with every big name title. They throw it out there, it's our fault if we fall victim to it. I have never played a TES game before Skyrim, so I thought what they were talking about WAS going to happen, I never considered that they'd cut a lot of stuff out.

So I'm wiser after Skyrim. I'll try not to fall victim to the hype of the next TES game, but I may not care: Skyrim is [censored] amazing, and I am loving it to death now - especially now that the lag has subsided(PS3). So I may just buy TES6 when it hits because I am now in love with these games.

oblivion did some things better, hilarity of NPCs saying the darndest things (like the guy above said), better NPC interactions, (sure they all sounded exactly the same but the conversations were much mreo interesting than skyrim's, skrim's conversations are all scripted and never change. ever. not to mention there is no talk of mudcrabs), NPCs did not give their life story when your within 100 feet of you, attributes, more skills (but oblivion failed miserably here too, it doesnt even have half of daggerfall's so i'll give skyrim a pass), spell creation and no fatalities

but otherwise skyrim did pretty good
