Bethesda ! Stop Removing the game !

Post » Sat Aug 11, 2012 1:15 pm

Hello There

Anyway , I want to open a discussion about the removal of features in Skyrim ( comparing to Morrowind and even Oblivion ).
Here's a clear list which only screams that out.

http://uesp.net/wiki/Differences_Between_Morrowind,_Oblivion,_and_Skyrim

The excuse might be the better appeal for the casuals , well I want to keep this civil and won't say the things I have in mind about the casual gamers.

Now what do you think ?

EDIT:

I completely agree , in some regards Skyrim is much better than Morrowind AND Oblivion.
Things like the dialogue , the world , etc.

EDIT2:
Very good explanation made not by me of the reasons for casuals hating:

Acrobatics was already an EXTREMELY useful skill in Oblivion. There was an entire alternate play style possible with maxed speed and acro, jumping over enemies' heads, leaping out of reach to snipe them, skipping puzzles in the Oblivion Gates by surviving leaps from fifty-storey towers or by skipping across lava. It was a really neat skill without being overpowered, and wasn't glitchy like in Skyrim.

Then they lolditched it to consolidate skills and dumb the game down for the casual gaming crowd, along with running speed (athletics), unarmed, mysticism, thaumaturgy, medium armour, unarmoured, all the perfectly sensible attributes, luck, situations where luck matters, spellmaking, logical enchanting, most options in conjuration, armour pieces (I know there is a technical reason for this one at least), and reputation with factions and in general. Let us all have a moment of silence for all the dozens or even pairs of things we have lost since Morrowind due to catering to a more casual-gaming crowd.

And this, my friends, is why hard- and mid-core gamers hate casuals.

EDIT3:
Another very good point made:

The problem isn't so much that lots of people out there can't/don't appreciate RPGs. It's that TES is supposed to be an open-world RPG series... and should therefore be aimed specifically at fans of open-world RPGs.

What Bethesda have done with Skyrim is they've tried to make it appeal to everyone with a games console or gaming PC. The end result is a popular game, but a poorer open-world RPG than it's predecessors.

I see that last thread has angered you to create this thread and point out the list more openly and make it less oblivious. I like it.

I love Skyrim. Love it just as much as Morrowind and Oblivion, but I will point out that it has been quite "dumbed down" and as taken out a lot of features, or has horribly changed some making them worse. I would really like them to answer why they would take more out of the game. It is the complete opposite of what you're suppose to do to a newer game of the series. You're suppose to ADD ON to the game, not TAKE AWAY from the game. Take out bad things, but not good things everyone liked or didn't mind.

It's only a matter of time before people start flaming the thread with accusations of Morrowind nostalgia.

Their design goals for Skyrim were fairly obvious. They've mentioned countless times in interviews that streamlining and greater accessibility were big development themes. Also, I think they've perhaps become a bit overconfident in the open world as the main selling point of the series.

The removals reflect this.

That's the exact thing that is bad.
People act as if they love the removals , Skyrim got so many sales that I'm afraid TES6 will have only Swords.

Skyrim definitely does things good, but I'm not hear to preach about that. Right now all the people who call constructive criticism whining and feel that talking badly about Skyrim is taboo leave the room now.

Now that we got that settled I would like to say that TES is definitely heading into a bad direction. I feel like the game is dumb downed or "streamlined" way too much. The "casuals" as people like to call them can handle some more depth and variation. So much variation has been taken away, for what? Graphics, to bring in the "casuals". I can only hope that Bethesda takes into consideration this thread and many others when making their next games. Hopefully I can see TES VI and laugh at what we had before.

Idiot is perhaps a bit harsh, but you'd be surprised; lots of people are intolerant of RPG features.

A friend of mine loves the GTA series, but won't even touch San Andreas because he finds the added RPG elements off-putting.

Some people just prefer the simpler action-adventure experience. They just want to dive into a gameworld and get straight to the action, without really worrying about character development.
