Larian is already doing http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/28/divinity-original-sin-announced-top-down-rpg-to-address-frustrations-with-divine-divinity/ and making an oldschool ISO/TB RPG for their next Divinity title, show us that the RPG market can handle more than repetitive FPS/TPS action titles.

Aww...I loved Divinity 2. I was hoping the next game would be something similar. :(

Heres hoping it'll be a good game anyway.

Well it looks pretty fun so far - even though it's just another regular "candyworld" fantasy setting and appears to be somewhat co-op oriented.

Anyways, the CDPR game is set to be announced this evening in their summer conference.

Yeah, I'm not sure about that one. The overall style looks a bit dated to me. Brave of them to do something different, but I'm not sure it's my sort of thing.

Yeah, the world of Divinity isnt particularly fascinating, but thats not what got me interested in Divinity 2. The whole turning-into-a-dragon thing was ridiculously fun, and I'm sad to see they've moved away from that.

Then again, this was the style of the first Divinity game, and has Divinity 2 wasnt exactly a smash hit, I dont blame them for trying to go back to their roots.

CD Projekt didn't create the world and story of the witcher series on their own, it was based on a book. He is asking if can they create a great story and world themselves instead of basing it on someone else's work (I think anyway).
That's the only potential problem I see with this, I am very curious to see if they can pull that off. It's still CD Projekt though, so the gameplay and quest design will no doubt be amazing.

Almost makes it sound as though co-op is obligatory. I would have to play with one of my sons [hears a disembodied voice from the dim and distant past saying 'Elf has eaten all the food']

News good folks. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/30/cd-projekt-reds-new-sci-fi-game/

It appears the game is basically based on one of if not the best cyberpunk role playing game out there. Hahaha, who would have thought? It looks awesome though. I might have to investigate this table top game further, it looks good. How the heck did I not find this before?

It's still too early to see where this is going, but it sounds like someone's finally making a game I've been waiting for!

Oh, good. Glad they're not doing an original IP. I wonder whether the tabletop RPG has any novelisations ...

It may as well be original, though it may have some background characters they can use in game. Unless they plan to convert some modules into a game, but I doubt that. Not even sure if it has any.

I do wish CDProjekt would stop referring to its games as "for a mature audience", because what they mean by that and what any normal person means by that are two totally different things. For CDProjekt, "for a mature audience" means, Boobs and curses! Giggle!

Unless ... they actually intend to make a game for a mature audience this time? That would be great.

The other kind of game is great, too, but just don't label it as "for a mature audience".

Yes, because things like complex politics, multifaceted characters, and grey-and-gray morality obviously mean nothing.

Thats great making a game based on cyberpunk the RPG, loved that game, should make a good computer game, and hopefully be alot better than that poor excuse for a shadowrun computer game.

I'm sold. I remember having fun playing Cyberpunk back in the day, and they even got the creator of the system to work with them. This just became my most anticipated game as of now.

Now only hoping that they deliver with both, mechanics and story -- story is more or less given seeing how they fared with Witchers (mostly decent to good mostly mature writing, choices and consequences), but the implementation of robust and refined RPG mechanics in general and in combat... (TB, TB, TB, TB, fingers crossed) Hope they deliver, because those weren't really the high points of the Withcer games.

Wonderful. Now all I need is a remake of Paranoia, and I am one happy puppy.

I'm interested and I'll be keeping an eye on this project. I didn't play the PnP game it's based on but I'm a huge fan of the dystopian/cyberpunk thing - I've even written a novel in the genre.

Whether I actually play it will depend if there is eventually a console port though, because there's no way I'm going back to playing games on a PC.

Damn it! It had to cut out just when the creator of the PnP game was talking! Really would've like to heard more of what he had to say.

Thanks. Guess he didn't have that much insightful stuff to add, but it was nice to hear more from CD Projekt RED and GOG.com afterward.

The only Cyberpunk PnP I'm familiar with is Shadowrun. I used to like to look at the pictures and read the lore. Does anyone know anything about the Cyberpunk rules? Think I'll have a go at reading up on them.

Just saw an http://www.zenimax.com/external.php?locale=en-us&url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117529-CD-Projekt-Red-Reveals-Cyberpunk about this.

Color me intrigued.

Cyberpunk comprised my longest-running tabletop RPG campaign, back in the day. I have both versions of the ruleset (I think there was one released not too terribly long ago, so I might be a bit out of date by now,) and tons of source books and companion material related to it. My roleplaying ran through about three generations of characters on that game, numerous sub-plots and one-off scenarios; and even dabbled a little bit in the Cyber Generations campaign (which was kind of an interesting departure on the franchise.)

Probably going to be some confusion regarding the name - certainly not the most inspired name for an RPG, but there you have it. It does work, however - the idea was to set a game comprising the genre as a whole (which was rather popular at the time it was running.) If you've read any William Gibson or Bruce Sterling - that's basically what they were going for. Rather than create their own world, it was kind of about roleplaying within a universe that was already pretty fairly well-known at that point in time.

Anyways, I loved that game.

I don't think I'd trust too many videogame companies to do a "proper" adaptation of the game (especially considering what that FPS Shadowrun game turned out like.) But these guys have a pretty good track record with a certain maturity in their games. I think that if anyone can pull it off, it'd be CDProjekt.

I'm certainly going to be keeping my eyes on how this all develops. I wasn't ever really expecting anyone to be making a videogame based on a tabletop series that pretty much took up the entirety of my high school years, so this was a pleasant surprise. (And if it turns into a really popular videogame series, I get to be one of those guys that says "well, I liked it even before it was popular!" )
