No joke, it is. Wanna know why? I'll keep it short and simple.
1- The world doesn't revolve around you. Enemy levels stay pretty static. You know what's funny? Grinding can be useless in that game unless you know the right spots and have A LOT of time to waste. You always feel a sense of danger and you're always affraid to tread further. You keep your shield up and you walk slowly because you know a giant skeleton could be right around the corner waiting to rip out your guts. In Skyrim? Nah, enemies are too weak and are always scaled. You'll rarely get outright owned.
2- The combat system is deadlier and not as simplistic. You're having a sword fight, one wrong swing could cost you your life. That's pretty much what will happen to you in Dark Souls. Swing too early or too late, you end up with a blade in your belly. Enemies are ruthless and gang up on you, they use their numbers to their advantage. Stamina ALWAYS matter in a fight, a swing costs stamina, once you're out of it, you cannot swing...or even block. It's really really important. And it really feels rewarding once you clear and area.
3- No ridiculous crafting system that makes you overpowered. Truth be told, you can get overpowered in Dark Souls. Thing is, you gotta earn it. You'll feel so happy cutting through the hordes of enemies that made your life a nightmare 30hrs earlier. You have to look for secret passages, treasures, loot the right enemies and play intelligently. It's not just some lame ass thing like crafting an iron dagger 10,000 times and get Master Smithing and then kill everything in a single blow. You'll feel you earned your god-like power in Dark Souls, and you'll be laughing like a manic [censored] once you get it, because the enemies are such a pain you just want to get revenge and boy does it feel good once you do.
4- The weapons and armor system beats yours. It's not as simple as Iron>Steel>Orcish>Dwarven. There are many different factors in choosing a weapon. Factors such as stats requirements(some weapon take a godly strenght stat to use, others require dexterity), swing speed, reach, etc. And guess what? That game has the weapons we've been asking from you for years. It has spears, it has throwings knives, there are even halberds, no play style is forgotten. A spear actually plays like a spear, ie: it has a long reach and is deadly at range, but pretty crappy up close. Same goes for armor, it's not some linear scaling. You gotta earn your uber armor and there are many factors in choosing an armor. Armor weight REALLY matters and heavy armor doesn't just become better than light armor at late levels, I won't get into all the stats that make weapons unique. That game weapons system is excellent, learn from them.
5- Dragons aren't turned into some lame nuisance 30 mins after you start the game. The dragons, these epic beasts we all wanted to see for years were ruined thanks to Skyrim. They're so weak and annoying. The first hour, fighting dragon is awesome but they quickly become a nuisance by appearing way too often and by being way too weak. In Dark Souls, you cannot slay a dragon until you're a relatively high level. At low levels that dragon(you all know who I'm talking about) just fries you. Really, how can a giant reptile breathing fire fall to something like a bear?
6- Cannot SPAM and spam and SPAM magic. Magic is powerful in Dark Souls, but its usage is very limited, you cannot just craft some gear and make magic cost you nothing. Again, you gotta earn your overpowered magic, you have to be smart in its usage as a single spell can turn the tide of a battle.
6. To wrap it up, Dark Souls is just flat out better. Skyrim is way too simplistic and easy, it doesn't feel rewarding, there aren't enough epic encounters and it's WAY too easy to abuse the system. Not saying you cannot abuse Dark Souls system, but it's far more complicated. Skyrim just feels like an action game and not like an actual RPG, that thing is closer to Call of Duty than it is to a traditional RPG. The lack of stats make character creation shallow as there are basically three classes in Skyrim, Thief, Warrior and Mage. No matter how you play, you'll end up being one of those three. Everything what made your series great was taken out in Skyrim, what made TES feel unique is all gone. It just seem like a generic game with TES lore and a nice battle system. Where is the customization depth? Where are all our favorite weapons? As time goes on, stuff is taken away from the TES series. It seems you're now only developing games for the money and are trying to attract as many casual gamers as you can possibly get. Know why Demon's Souls was not considered a casual game? Becuase of its high difficulty level, deep gameplay and overall complicated mechanics, it took time to learn and adapt. Know what they did with Dark Souls? They took what made Demon's Souls great and cranked it up x10! It's harder, more ruthless, more rewarding and deeper. They kindly told the casual gamers to [censored] off if they are looking for an easy game that can be finished in 8hrs. Bethesda, you're doing the exact opposite, you're falling prey to the casual market, frankly, it seems you don't give a damn by now because all you care about is the money.
Sincerly yours, a former fan of the TES series.
PS: That Gaping Dragon in Dark Souls had an epic piece of music. Maybe you should think about that too Beth. Make your boss battles more challenging.
