Did the Gaming Community go to far in their attacks against

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:37 am

I just read about this and disgusted about this, I actually am one of the people who didn't loath DA2, in fact before you call me casual gamer, I love Planescape:Torment and Baldur's Gate. This article provides some interesting things to discuss about, and whether gaming community put itself up for abuse from politicians and the likes, by these sorta actions.

Extract posted to give people idea, but recommend read whole thing.

http://www.blisteredthumbs.net/2012/02/editorial-entitlement-to-ignorance-in-defense-of-jennifer-hepler/

Warning. This editorial contains some foul and perverse language. It is not safe for work and may offend people. You have been warned.

I wonder sometimes why I proudly proclaim myself to be a lover of video games in public. Despite my love for the world of gaming, I often am afraid to admit that I am such a gamer, because it usually leads to negative stereotyping. It is a curious thing, because this nearly exclusive culture of interactive media that I, and many of those reading this, have vehemently defended by attackers from the outside would rally in a heartbeat to stop the likes of Jack Thompson, Craig Anderson or even Joe Lieberman when attempting to censor or belittle our industry.

But this week, I witnessed the absolute worst of us in action, a sort of mob mentality that has generated more harm than good for the industry, because it just reinforces stereotypical rhetoric we have heard before. And what’s worse, it feels as if, despite several articles by high profile writers such as Jim Sterling, David Nye Griffiths, or others commenting on the issue that has, for the lack of a more eloquent term, caused a media [censored]-storm over the gaming sphere.

I am of course referring the recent attacks against one Jennifer Hepler, currently a writer at BioWare who worked on both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II. On February 2nd, Hepler apparently signed up for a twitter account for the first time…only to request it to be taken down two weeks later after a flood of vicious attacks by what can only be described as an angry mob. Poking fun at her looks, gender and religion, making claims she needs to be [censored] and is comparable to Hitler, and calling her vile things like an “ obese [censored]” or “[censored]” with little context or provocation.

Well, that is partially true. Apparently on Reddit recently, a thread (that has been taken down at this point by Reddit) titled “This woman is a cancer that’s killing Bioware” was the source of most of this rank vitriol. And what’s worse, it is mostly due to the cherry-picking of quotations made in 2006, as seen in the photo shown here. (I’m not reposting it because… well, its disgusting.)

The two quotes come from an interview by Helper for the site Killer Betties. Sadly, the link to the interview is no longer functional, but thanks to internet archiving, the full interview can still be seen right here. The two primary complaints were general quotations regarding her stance on video games. Specifically, the fact that playing the games was her least favorite thing about video games, and games should give players the option to skip fight scenes to make games much shorter than they were.

Of course, these are loaded statements already that contracted negative attention. But the context of these statements is just as important, because what people tend to forget is that there is more behind a sound bite than a just a blanket statement, something Fox News needs to learn still in the political realm.

How is this kind of thing surprising anymore?

While her skip-gameplay idea is absolutely ridiculous it doesn't warrant personal attacks. However, she was very unprofessional as well "durr, you're just jealous I'm a girl in the game industry!!" and the Bioware guys just added more fuel to the fire.

1. What exactly makes us a "community"? Are rugby players a "community"?
2. There are trolls on the internet. As a professional, you have to be able to take, even vitriolic, criticism of your work. As a professional, you should not rise to the bait.
3. From what I've read on the topic, the attacks were not nearly as vicious until she retorted with her [censored]. Until she retorted with her female genitalia.
4. The way people acted is uncalled for, but she didn't help matters any.
5. Quite frankly, I'm fed up with both parties.

Of course they did. There's nothing wrong with disliking her writing or disagreeing with her opinions on game design, but folks took it much, much further than that and things got way out of hand.

Narmy, some games work without gameplay, for instance ones like Indigo Prophecy or Heavy Rain, true still have gameplay, but it's lighter, she loves writing and why she joined the industry, true wrong reason, but should she be ostracized for this, no! True she did fuel the fire, but with attacks like that three reactions, laugh them off, get really depressed or attack back.

I know, I love many games with little or no gameplay. I'm talking about trying to skip gameplay in a game where the gameplay is important.

True, I can see both sides here, if games have boring stories I don't like --- if that fails I have to like mechanics, Bayonette anyone? Bioshock does this fantastically, great use of political themes and overall feeling of no idea what's going on. Myst is an example of her sorta loves, and that game is engaging as is many adventure games. Seems to me she should be working on reviving adventure game market.

Narmy, Rulke, read the http://kotaku.com/5886674/bioware-writer-describes-her-gaming-tastes-angry-gamers-call-her-a-cancer, and especially DocSeuss's comments underneath. He goes into detail about why having someone like Hepler on a team, or in the video gaming industry in general, is detrimental.

Read it oOf and disagree with Seuss, Adventure games are largely based on story and don't require much fighting, in fact early Adventure games you simply use set of comments to move forward and stuff, Broken Swords prime example of this.

The Tallest, the extract does provide context, but for your sake, she was one of the Lead Writers of Bioware during Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2.

That's it? That's all she said? There's not even a debate. /first world problems

Imagine if the internet existed a long time ago. I wonder if we would have half the inventions we do today if people shouted down people with crazy ideas. Before planes existed it was thought to be completely impossible and for the birds. My point is, this is [censored] silly. People should be ashamed to be associated with these "gamers". It's no more serious or musing then if I begin to wonder if computers need teleportation devices, or any number of silly things. My point is she was hardly serious, it was more like some random musings. And even if games started doing that I think one of three things happen.

1. It creates a new industry for games that are more on the movie side of the equation than games.
3. A new game genre.
2. It fails to thrive and dies off because people then realize there's no point calling a game a game if there's nothing to play. An instance where the movie and game mediums just can't meet.
Is any of that worth hurting her this much emotionally?

But still, for some of the comments she's gotten over such a tiny thing. People need to take some chill pills or something.

She's a writer, she is not required to play the game. She is not responsible if the game is fun to play or not. If you have complaints about storylines, then that's her field. I personally don't like the stories in Dragon Age:Origin, but if she designed the character dialogues, then I have mixed feeling with her.

Narmy, Rulke, read the Kotaku article, and especially DocSeuss's comments underneath. He goes into detail about why having someone like Hepler on a team, or in the video gaming industry in general, is detrimental.
It actually won't, cause she's not in the field of decision making in gameplay. She's into stories and writings, she wants to skip the fights and gets to the stories that's all.

You played PS:T? The combats there are generally fast forward buttons. Would you call Chris Avellone a cancer to gaming industry? DocSeuss knows some old school things, but he cut off one of the big part of some great classical RPGs, stories.

I'm surprised you read through all of his comments that quickly. Are you sure you caught all of them? Go through all of the comments. He does consider text adventures, etc., games. Really, do read all his comments. It's quite succinct and insightful.

Better yet, Oof, ignore Kotaku in general - http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielnyegriffiths/2012/02/21/bioware-hepler-harassment/ But, nice to see that "DocSeuss" comment you referred to also completely missed the point of the articles and that her comments were taken out of context. It's always fun to perpetuate the stuff I guess.

Some are entirely missing the point as to drive the point home. Behaving badly, just because you are anonymous on the internet, is something a person should be ashamed of. When is it ever acceptable to personally attack someone because you don't like the company they work for, or you disagree with something they said. Is it SO hard to frame your comments to disagree with the argument, not attack the person? Or is it so easy to forget that these are real people? That someone's parent or child might be searching for information about someone they care about and get treated to ugly, crude, libelous, childish, attacks and images?

It's not at all surprising that she or anyone else occasionally bites back when relentlessly attacked by anonymous ranters - what's surprsing is that they and many others mostly refrain and rarely sink to the level of their attackers.

I read most of them, he's just repeating a lot of what he said, and he still doesn't consider adventure games in any of these points. Myst is prime example of her sorta game, puzzles galore, largely story and no major gameplay mechanics.

Well this day goes down into one of the black days of humanity. I'm just waiting for the eventual holocaust of all people who like oranges next. If the internet keeps sinking to new levels it won't be too far off either. Please, if some aliens, or humans, or god, or some sort of other presence is out there watching me. I am not with those people. I beg for your forgiveness. They do not have any real perspective to what's important in life. :sadvaultboy:

Yeah, I had started to read it then I realized that I never played any of the Dragon Age games and that I honestly didn't care who she was or what happened to her.

*Edit

OK, I read it and came to the conclusion that I care even less now than I did before.

Opinion is a powerful thing that can drive many to commit horrible acts. People are allowed to have their opinions, but once a person starts believing their opinion is more valued/valid over another person's opinion then it becomes a problem. I think gamers have a right to be upset/angry though it doesn't give them the right to act in such a manner.

Personally I do not find this surprising in the least. As others have commented trolls are everywhere and will poke their ugly heads out to spew vile venom at whatever they want. While their actions are not condonable the person at Bioware they are aiming their attacks at didn't have the right to respond in such a manner. She has opened the floodgates by acknowledging the trolls along with their comments.

I don't know what really happened so I say to hell with both parties.

She doesn't know what the hell she's talking about and doesn't deserve to be in the industry.

As for the ppl who belitteled her. Well, hopefully they get a STD or something that keeps them from being able to have a significant other.

I'm not defending the attackers. There's no reason for that kind of behaviour. I was referring Narmy and Rulke to DocSeuss's anolysis about why non-gaming people in gaming is not a good idea, not as regards his assessment of the situation.

That's probably a bit OT. I just wanted to chime in on Narmy and Rulke's discussion.

People are entitled to defend themselves on the internet. However, they have to realise that their actions may just lead to worse. That's just the reality. In this case, that's what happened.
