Disappointing Combat

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 4:11 am

I thought the combat looked way too easy.

People have pointed out that the player is lousy, which makes it even more disappointing that he killed off one imperial soldier after another with a few slashes, and even a bear, albeit with the help of a companion.

Todd Howard said the dragons make the game hard and from the looks of the intro I believe it, but I was hoping everything else would be more challenging than in Oblivion too. I think it's much more satisfying when you start out struggling against even mudcrabs and really work your way up like in Morrowind.

Also, while the animation is much better than in previous games, I still find it too stationary. Sometimes an enemy just stands there as the player slashes them.

Enemies are always weak in the tutorial. Remeber the goblins in Oblivions tutorial dungeon. People are becoming a bit of worry warts in these final days methinks.

I have been anxiously awaiting this game for a very, very long time, this is a very special series for me :)
So of course I get worried if the enemies are unrealistically beatable for a noob, but good point about the tutorial enemies being easy.

Still, the fact that the guards just stand around, not just in parts of combat but during dramatic dialogue (instead of using hand and arm gestures etc) is kind of a downer for me because official footage so far has shown us great attention to minute details and in comparison I found the animation in the intro much less polished.

Not a surprise. Not like I give too much of a [censored] either and I love to play melee types. Issue is I'd rather not have my ass handed to me because the enemy got a good chain of hits that rendered me useless and unable to attack. Nor do I want combat so simplified that the enemy will just sit there and take it up the [censored] while I effortlessly break him to bits. Flashy? Sure. Interesting in the long run? Eh. Not my cup of tea. Doesn't quite matter as much to me and the combat is decent enough to have fun with it in a game where Melee isn't 100% the focus :\.

Meh looks ok to me... In any event, I prefer to play mages or archers and stealth chars so I guess I don't care much.

Melee look good to me from what ive read most ppl want the enemy to react more to each hit the character give to the enemy now with how fast you can actually hit an enemy if they reacted to each and every attack you would get easy kills just like that and if you look threw all the gameplay there is out you can see that the enemys do react to some of the attacks ie the troll in the quake con demo moved back when he hit him once and not every enemy should react to be a dragon is not gona react to ever hit the tree ppl to me wouldnt either. in all it looks very improved from OB but im mainly a mage anyways SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YEA still looks ok to me

I don't have to play Dark Souls to know that it svcks. Watching a playthrough is more than enough to form an opnion. And my being called a really devoted fan is a compliment. Oh and Skyrims combat looks badass.

Thats quite the fan-boy you have there. Oh dear, he just vomited all over the thread... Are you feeding him right? He looks like a malnourished sickly eel. Maybe you should put him away for the day, hm?

Dark Souls is mundane, ugly, repetitive. Don't try to convince me otherwise.

I don't think the article was very convincing. I don't think you're very convincing, either.

The fact that it's half-decent is awesome!

Oh how I love a good flame, sometimes I like to just watch it burn for a while. But now is the time to kindle the fire.
I've never seen a game where melee combat was realistic, everything that people have said to have good combat is crap in the realism department. Were it realistic a single blow would cause a fatal wound and people with plate armor would be nigh-invincible gods of the battlefield with the running speed of the average cripple. The combat looks and from what I've heard feels better than Oblivion's, but it's still Elder Scrolls so expecting anything beyond that standard is straight up moronic. It looks better than Oblivion and is miles ahead of Morrowind no matter how much [censored]ing you throw at it, stop having really devoted fan squeals like a DA fan.

I think they should've taken some pointers (not copy, mind you, although I wouldn't have minded it) from the melee combat of Risen. There enemies blocked, dodged and used counterblows so often one actually had to pay attention to the happenings -- hits and counterblows caused staggering quite often, as well as hitting someones parry. The combat was often deadly if you lost focus, and overall it felt quite dynamic and responsive - you couldn't just clickety click through.
A slightest hint of similarity with other game's combat would damage a developer's integrity. Let alone copying... (no offence... want cookie? )

I've said this here that the problem is not of something being lack of this or that, but wanting a game to be like other games. And that other games also often nitpicking about combat no matter how "seemingly perfect" their combat was.

Thing i was scared about is actually true. Skyrim's combat is fairly disappointing guys. Read this:

http://www.hookedgamers.com/blogs/chrispriestman/2011/10/31/skyrims_combat_may_not_be_good_enough_for_todays_standard.html

It is more like Oblivion and Fallout's Gamebryo Engine! :( MEH!! Damnnn.... what do u guys have to say?
i think the combat system look awesome

I would take that article with a grain of salt. A video can show you the gameplay and combat system...but until you play it yourself, and see how it feels you really won't know. Just my opinion! :)

Skyrim's combat system is fine so long as you know how to use it.

I think people are just used to the extremely fast pace of shooters or something.. Sword combat is obviously different. There were sword duels in history that actually went on for days.. parties tiring out, taking a break and coming back to the duel the next day.
Since there aren't many games that deal with close combat I'm wondering what people are comparing the combat too that they think it's 'bad' in any way.

That is your opinion, but it seems tinged with bias. Trying to pass it off as absolute truth only makes you appear disingenuous. It is http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=he7AS_h5QlA#t=21s by any means, though its style may not be to everyone's liking.

"Oh, and let's not forget one of the best combat systems ever...possibly, as seen in Batman: Arkham City."

This guy hasn't even played the game and hes comparing combat to automated third person action/arcade titles - which would destroy TES if they copied such a thing.

Atleast its better then Morrowinds.
Miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, hit, miss, miss.
Plus Dark Souls is a linear and lack luster game. TES is open-ended.

But a true demonstration of Skyrim combat would be best illustrated by someone who actually knew how to fight in one these games. This guy is like an old lady in her car weaving all over the road. Just pitiful.

Sorry we cant all be gods of elder scrolls combat. It's a brand new game so he hit the wrong button. That doesn't make him a horrible player. You sound incredibly elitist in this post

If it's anything like Oblivion, then it'll be nothing more than an dumbed down adventure game centered around combat, and if the combat svcks, then this game will flop.
Yeah it will flop just like Oblivion did. Oblivion was the fastest selling game in xbox history at that time.

The combat appears to be much improved over Oblivion by watching the official videos. Anyone can make any game look good or bad, it all depends on who's playing it, camera angles, what you are looking at (the games weaknesses, or it's strong points?) etc. Celebrities look hot on film but after a night out partying and no makeup at a bad angle they can look like crap.

What matters is the average sum of all the footage & average sum of the reviews. I'd say most the footage looks great. From what we've read, most reviews and pax players all said it played nice and combat had feel to it, the weapons have weight when they hit, etc. Only a few had some small negatives to say about it. Right now I'd say the consensus has all been "It's way better than Oblivion" so I'm going with that concept.
