Does anybody else take a strange kind of joy in saying morbi

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:05 am

In army times my habit of being so harsh on people who saw good things where they were undeserved, and my tendency to bash inferior soldiers made me a favorite of (some) officers and got me some protectors in the upper levels and some granted me a unique unspoken permission to skip the usual sir-this-sir-that formalities.
It was a considerable evolution from my school times, where my ranting was not targeted for a specific gain. There my way of getting known was to use my superior knowledge (gained from a decade of intense bookworming) to "paint devils on the walls" as the proverb goes, that is scaring less intelligent folks with future threats and inevitable doom. I was also one of the two openly Antitheist students and we two didn't fear to make our views be known by everyone.

But it's not childish and immature to say it, knowing that others will get offended.

I see...

(I don't, actually.)

I don't actually know if someone will get offended, that's the whole point in saying it. half the fun is in seeing just how people will react.

Sounds like you're socially [censored] more than anything else. Seriously, context is the key to these things. If you're with friends that find that thing funny, sure. But if you're not? Don't. Simple as, really.

Actually, I'm quite sociably liked. I've learned long ago not to spout off things people will likely find offensive with abandon in public. Barring 20% or so of my jokes, I save it for the internet where anonymity ensures my physical safety, employment, and keeps me in people's good books.

People seem to have morbid sense of humor confused with sophomoric, shocking or edgy.
Morbid humor, like Zardoz pointed out, eases the discomfort of a given situation, without being overtly offensive.

Only one person in all the years I have been on this forum, has gotten the humor behind my avatar, and they are not in this thread. Nor am I going to explain it. You either understand the statement it is making, or you lack the requiste knowledge of the situation to comprehend it.
Yes, I have been told repeatedly that I have a wickedly amusing morbid sense of humor. It's one of the things my husband loves about me.

I usually stop taking people serious at that point. Because usually the people who go 'lol there is no God' are the people spamming your Facebook feed with antitheist pictures, quotes or 'proof' stories. I mean, in general, I'm cool with what people choose to believe, it's the people who go around to people shouting 'LOVE GOD OR BURN IN HELL!' and 'LOL THERE IS NO GOD YOU IGNORANT SAVAGE!' to be offensive. It's cool to share your beliefs and talk about them in a civilised discussion, but when people are so overly aggressive and looking to pick a fight verbally (Or physically in some cases) I just feel like they're trying to be edgy or cool. I suppose in the end it's how the believer comes off. If the person believing in whatever just believes in it, more power to them, but they're going to go around picking fights and trolling to offend others, they need to back off and leave others alone.

(Mod note: I'm not trying to talk about religion btw, just a certain types of people that cause problems with others over it.)

Yeah, tell me how that works out for you.

It's worked well for me. See my sig and how many people I've angered in the past on these forums alone.

Thing is, I don't care if anyone likes me or the things I say or post. I'm not responsible for anyone's feelings but my own.

If I'm with people that know my humor then I'll be open about it. In front of my co-workers, professors, and supervisor? Not so much.

Simply because I yearn for a world in which people aren't restricted in what they can say (both legally and morally) doesn't mean I'm stupid enough to act on it in public.

Never met someone who says such things who wasn't transparently trying to be edgy.

Haha, completely this.
Never seen anyone that's convincingly 'messed up', it's just attention seeking.

A few years ago I was hospitalized at UNC (for psychological reasons, I won't go into depth because I'm lazy), and only had 'school' for one hour at a time every other day. They couldn't ever get a hold of my teachers, so I never did any real work. One day, we did a power point on owls. I choose some black owl with large, red eyes and typed such things as "I will devour your eternal soul". My psychologist found this disturbing. Now, I had always took some pleasure in saying things of that ilk and never thought it odd. My favorite one as of late being "Soul crushing is my favorite sport, right next to dream smashing." It just makes me feel good. I'm normally very good with introspection, but I'm sleepy and don't feel like thinking for myself right now. So I'll have the forums do the thinking for me. Make it known if you say similar things, pretty please.

It might just be that I have a knack for black comedy and that is how I desensitize myself to...yeah, no. I'm sleepy and don't feel like thinking big thoughts about little things.

If you really do enjoy this type of behavior I highly suggest you try the new MMO Star Wars the Old Republic. If you play the Empire or Sith side you get to make comments like that in just about every single quest you take on...its is delicously evil! :D

Is this what the next generations bring to the table? No empathy, no compassion, no consideration? I think the world just grew a little bit darker... and colder.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of dark humor, but I guess it depends on the when and where. I care what happens in the world. I cry for strangers, who suffer a terrible fate. I count my blessings and try to live a happy life, be a good person, help others and show compassion for my fellow human, as well as for animals.

Compassion is what sets us apart from animals. It is what makes us human. We are all born with a heart, so why doesn't everyone use it?

I'm scared of what the future may hold, if more and more people forget what empathy and compassion means.

I thought our genes made us human. Silly me.

What people seem to be saying is that they don't waste their energy being compassionate or empathetic where it would be useless. Why bother caring about something that's happened an ocean away, that you have no control over? It's a perfectly acceptable way to conserve what is, after all, a limited capacity to care about things. There's nothing wrong with that. It's one of the traits valued in EQ tests, and for good reason.

It's a good people filter. I usually have most fun with people who can take the occasional morbid / tasteless comment, so it works out ok.

...although it kind of backfired recently, I was kissing this Norwegian girl (which doesn't happen very often) and for some reason started discussing my idea for a Ut?ya boardgame. Suddenly she didn't like me anymore.

(I know some incredibly compassionate, caring people with sick humour. There doesn't seem to be any correlation one way or the other.)

I'd say Noel Fielding is pretty much like that. He's isn't dark or depressing, but he does some pretty off the all and weird [censored].

Oh I have been enjoying my Sith Inquisitor.

Just a side note: I don't say things to offend demographics, just to unnerve people in general. I don't go overkill with it either, its no fun if you just blurt it out all the time. Its only satisfying when your timing is correct.

This. I'm no sociopath; I care for my friends and family deeply. I have too many things going on in my life to worry about dead people half way across the Earth. I do not know them, and I can do nothing for them, so why waste time worrying about them when I could be worrying about and helping my own?

You laugh at our misery. How heartless.
That doesn't count for free spirits though... only the one who got scared along the way.

Ps if you're born with a old soul that doesn't count either... only for those who have to learn from scratch.

Actually, I'm trying to be generous. Because as far as I'm concerned, only 2 types of people act that way. Immature who are just trying to be "edgy" or "cool," and the other would be people with serious mental problems whom I would avoid like the plague. I am going to pretend that all the ones admitting to such activities are of the immature crowd, because the alternative is just too scary to contemplate.

Pffft, I have the best mom in the world. And dad. And as people have said, you can't feel empathy for every single person on the earth that you know nothing about, but when you hear of a disaster, and hear details of what someone went through, doesn't it make you (not you personally, but in general) think, "There but for the grace of God, go I?" I mean, compassion for others in a situation that could be yourself in other circumstances is totally human. Having no compassion or empathy for someone simply because you don't know them personally? Hmmm...makes me wonder how people can be so heartless. Makes them seem closer to animals, and since so many seem to see themselves as nothing more than talking animals, it's no wonder. :ermm:

Plus, there is enough morbidity and disgusting behavior/talk in the world without me having to listen to people do it just for the sake of seeing my reaction. My reaction will not be to anybodys liking who acts that way in my presence. They might be very embarrassed by the time I get through. :stare:
