Does anybody else take a strange kind of joy in saying morbi

I find your lack of empathy slightly disturbing.
Me too. I made a thread about it some time ago.

But you know what? I don't care.
Its unfortunate that angsty teens have cornered the market on the 'I loathe humanity' angle.
It's called misanthropy.

A few years ago I was hospitalized at UNC (for psychological reasons, I won't go into depth because I'm lazy), and only had 'school' for one hour at a time every other day. They couldn't ever get a hold of my teachers, so I never did any real work. One day, we did a power point on owls. I choose some black owl with large, red eyes and typed such things as "I will devour your eternal soul". My psychologist found this disturbing. Now, I had always took some pleasure in saying things of that ilk and never thought it odd. My favorite one as of late being "Soul crushing is my favorite sport, right next to dream smashing." It just makes me feel good. I'm normally very good with introspection, but I'm sleepy and don't feel like thinking for myself right now. So I'll have the forums do the thinking for me. Make it known if you say similar things, pretty please.

It might just be that I have a knack for black comedy and that is how I desensitize myself to...yeah, no. I'm sleepy and don't feel like thinking big thoughts about little things.

It's not the smartest thing to say such things to your psychologist.

About the bombings and all that, I think that's perfectly normal. We weren't made to live with so much information, we were made to live in a small tribe of a few dozen people that are all related to us in some way. When we're constantly being bombarded with information of stuff happening all around the world about complete strangers, there's no alternative but being desensitized. I don't think that's a bad thing either. Every single second there's someone around the world dealing with unimaginable pain. Some people are dying right now, some people are seeing loved ones dying right now. It's just too much information and it wouldn't be sane to feel bad about that all the time.

I remember I used to "try" to feel bad when I was younger, because I thought I should. I thought there could be something wrong with me because I didn't feel anything knowing that whatever thousands of people died somewhere. The way I see it now though, is that that's perfectly natural. What really makes us feel something is when you can relate to what a person felt. That usually doesn't happen with numbers being spewed by some news anchor.

To the OP: The way I interpreted it, the owl thing was probably just a poor attempt at comedy that was taken too seriously by a psychologist in the context of your history. You don't get into details but being hospitalized by psychological reasons and then writ ting about devouring souls, might have sounded like an alarm signal.

I agree, and that's why I think a lot of people on the forum needs to stop going on about how they hate the world/themselves, which seems to be the latest fad.

okaaaay lots of weird posts here

morbid jokes should only be made about subjects people are taking too seriously, and need to think differently about. humor is important as long as it's innocent.

Hey, I've been hating the world longer than anyone I know. I don't hate myself. I'm just an angry at the world type of guy. :)

Yeah, and that attitude I can manage to ignore in small doses. But the forum seems flooded with the two attitudes lately.

I personally have a tendency to find others' problems to be a little amusing from time to time. I also didn't really care about the bombing/shooting that occurred here in Norway last summer. I didn't get shot, why the hell should I care?

I...Uh...Have you heard of empathy? Jesus man, that's pretty cold. I read a really interesting book called the "psychopath test." It's about a guy who finds out what defines a psychopath and how they think differently to "normal" people. One of the classic indicators was a lack of empathy.

Just a heads up for the future.

Sorry, I know I've been worse lately. 2011 was a rough year for me so I've been very angry. I'm hoping 2012 is better bit it's still too early to see.

Cold? That's not cold at all, not by my standards. Though I get how it might appear as such, from an objective perspective.

Oh, if you've ever watched Invader Zim then you'd know that The Tallest are just tall Irken aliens that rule over the short ones. But, yes, I'm a guy.

LOL @ TESTanner, that's mean. LOL.

Many people don't feel empathy for those they haven't met. Why should I concern myself with numbers on a television screen if the only names I know them by are victim 1, 2, 3 and 4?

I mean, I'm loyal to my friends and keep a tight knit circle of people I'm very close to, but those outside this circle usually don't concern me.

That's probably what she's responding to. Rightly or wrongly, psychiatrists subscribe to the theory that being unconcerned about the way your words effect others is a bad sign.

I can see that. I don't go around insulting people or tormenting them because of their faults, but that's only because every time I've done it (only during grade school, really) I've felt awful. Talking about nailing bodies to the side of Hoover Dam, facing West so that they may watch their world die just feels me to the brim with joy. I really don't hate people, I'm just not a fan of most of them and the odd looks on their faces are entertaining.

I end up quoting Chuck Palahniuk's books often, just because I like the minimalist, brutal honesty, and all around (while transparent, they aren't psychopaths, their just close to it) apathy of his characters.

Like sterotypes of Scotland, people play on these and depict us as ginger kilt wearing haggis eating and big whisky drinkers - I love these sterotypes and would gladly be them all, apart from ginger. Actually I'm all of them on occasion lol

Even ginger? I like ginger people. :sadvaultboy:

Louis CK is great, he used to have that bit about the n-word, which was hilarious, but removed it, and the word, from his act altogether when people started using it to justify using it themselves - now that's a stand up stand up.

Yeah, he's my favourite comedian.

humor is important as long as it's innocent.

Why does humour need to be "innocent"? What does that even mean? Would this exclude something like ribald humour? I like ribald humour.
