Doomsday Preppers

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:15 am

I genuinely believe that if I won the lottery I may end up like some of these people, with a secure bunker and all that. When I read the Zombie Survival Guide I honestly got a little scared and did take some of it a bit closer to heart than I maybe should have (not the cardio bit though - way too lazy).

I'm right there with you; better safe than sorry.

EDIT: Oh no, don't you guys bring politics into this. We have had too many good threads die lately.

O.o

Last thing we need is MORE war ffs...

we've been "at war" for over a decade now... it's ridiculous. Our economy cannot sustain this.
Iran just said publicly that they are state sponsors of terrorism. And the people of Syria need help, the reds aren't gonna offer any.

I agree---I'm not trying to start anything but the US needs to stop being the global police and let other countries deal with their issues weither we like it or not. We should ONLY get involoved if it threatens our boarders.

If Syria needs help, they should petition the UN for help.

No help should be provided without explicit request, and then only in-so-far as required to protect humanitary interests. We should NOT be going in overthrowing governments.

Protecting people from genocide, yes. Absolutely.

But I sat around for 3 years with a thumb up my bum reading reports of genocide in Africa and... nothing.

Then 1 lil attack on US soil and we're going into countries totally unrelated on totally shaky grounds of aiding and abetting the terrorists and a supposed WMD cache that never existed

I have enough forum experience to know this very well :P

I ??? to discuss topics though, especially world topics. Inevitably someone gets offended, usually over a misunderstanding, some troll saying something idiotic and offensive, or someone is simply so strongly rooted in their beliefs that anything to the contrary is simply offensive to them.

Stay well away from politics please. I will now be checking this topic.
Just checked ToS... didn't see politics listed as a banned topic O.o I understand why it's a sensitive subject of course, and I do know they almost inevitably get closed down for the reason I just specified... but that involves someone actually breaking ToS (Flaming and insulting other members typically).

I like to see just how long these conversations can remain civil... sometimes quite a while.... this community seemed mature enough to keep things level for a while.

Anyways, I won't discuss the topic anymore... I hope discussing the topic of discussing the topic isn't bad

Not to be smarmy Ro, but wouldn't Restricted imply heavily monitored or regulated, not exactly forbidden topics? Wouldnt it be fair to call them 'Banned topics'? :P

We seriously need to disarm the world... Personally I think we should lead by example but w/e

No. Just no.

It should be the opposite. Everyone should be armed.

Not really, it's just you aren't the first person to make that joke. At this point I didn't have to even click the link because I already know it's probably that village people joke I bet. It was funny the first time, but around the tenth time it felt like enduring Arrow to the Knee jokes.

Some of these people are prepared. But there is a difference between someone who is prepared and someone who is just living to be prepared for the end of the world.

On the commercials for the show I saw this obese lady saying "I'll have enough food" or whatever. Yeah, you'll end up starving later though.

Depending on the nature of the crisis, maybe, maybe not....

If it's a Katrina level crisis... where it's just the zone you're in and you need to hold out for help, a few weeks or couple months of food and water should see you through to rescue even under the worst rescue situations (which given FEMA's track record, you might want to expect)

However if it's a much larger economical meltdown and food distribution simply falls flat on it's face... you'll need to find land on which you can grow your own food, and you'll need enough food to last until harvest. This situation is far less likely (though honestly still a potential reality) and you'd need a lot more food, and seeds, and a destination (or multiple should the first prove invalid due to circumstances at the time) as well as a way to get there (fuel could be a rare or even unavailable resource)

In this situation there is no rescue... and quite frankly survival would be slim even if prepared... of course, this is also a much more unlikely scenario.

The former scenario on the other hand does happen... we haven't mastered total control over nature and major earthquakes/tsunamis could wreck extensive destruction.

It's not paranoia to recognize these potential events.... it's common sense.

Paranoia is dwelling on them and living your life in perpetual fear of them. Having reasonable preparations is just... well... reasonable, even if potentially (and hopefully) unneeded.

Last thing you want is Murphy's law biting you in the backside during a crisis
