Doomsday Preppers

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 11:19 am

So is anyone else gonna watch http://postapocalypticearth.blogspot.com/2012/02/doomsday-preppers-series.html later tonight. I can't wait to see it mostly so I know where I can go to scrounge supplies as all these people that are planning on bugging in are gonna likely get attacked because they did the show. Also might be able to get some ideas out of it as well. I know of someone that was asked to take part in the show as well as several other prepper shows and said no for just that reason. But hopefully this will get people into the subculture know as http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/21/us-usa-civilization-collapse-idUSTRE80K0LA20120121.

A life spent constantly worrying about the end of the world is a sad life indeed.

So what your saying is that nothing bad ever happens? That your shouldn't prepare for things that you know WILL happen? I live in Southern California, we get earthquakes here and we are past due for a LARGE one. The gulf and east coast get hurricanes, should those people not worry about that? I can go on with many other REAL examples you know. And just so you know, no I am not saying I believe the world is going to end. If it did nothing prepping could do would help anyone, but I believe that since we live in reality I can't sit idly by as shtf.

I think theres a bit of a difference between people that prep for an apocalypse and people that prep for a likely event like a natural disaster or home invasion

No, mainly because I have a faith in the U.S. that many don't have. A faith in weaponry and technology that we know of and we don't know of.

Meh, when the world blows up it'll happen in a way that we can't do much about. Nuclear war, asteroid impact, or some other major calamity. No matter how you prepare you're going to be toast

Wanna bet me a million bucks? If there isn't a hurricane this year in the gulf, or tornadoes in tornado alley, or a earthquake somewhere in the world, fires, etc etc I'll give you a million bucks. Just so you know you'll already have lost. Stuff happens, and just because you prep doesn't mean you believe the end of the world is coming.

Bad things happen. However, you certainly do not KNOW that these things WILL happen. There is a fine line between say, preparing for bushfires by fire-proofing your home and building a bunker in case aliens attack. If you dedicate your life to preparing for ridiculous things that probably wont happen, then you've wasted your life. Instead of fretting about 'what if' situations, why not live the best life you can?

How many doomsayers have claimed the world will end to only have nothing happen? How many poor fools have been tricked into believing the end times are upon them only to find humanity go on as before? No-one knows when the world will end or when catastrophies will occur, so rather than spend my life in fear, I would rather live the best life I can and make the most of the time that was given to me.

Living in fear is no life at all.

Yes, things will happen somewhere in the world, but saying that its going to happen where you are on the sole principal that it hasn't happened in a while is, in fact, the gambler's fallacy.

Alright, as your friendly neighborhood moderator, I'm just going to step in and remind everyone that there's no reason to have a heated discussion about this sort of thing.

I'll watch it tonight, both to see how people prepare for disasters and to laugh at how some people go way overboard with the "doomsday" prep.

Really hate to sound like a troll, but I agree with this here. Only show I liked was that one on Discovery that had 2 seasons that dealt with an end of the world scenario. To me it's not that nothing bad happens, but that it would take an extraordinary series of events to cause it to happen.

You do know humanity has gone through all that but nuclear war(though there is radioactive glass in India some say was caused by nukes thousands of years ago) and we're all still here right? Stuff happens, dedicating your life to living through the end of civilization may seem wasted but some actually enjoy that. To you it may seem wasted, but to others it's a way to bring together family or meet new people. What they are going to be showing is hopefully a mix of people that have taken it to far, and those that are just living in the real world and having a backup plan. Not only that the US government WANTS people to prep(to a degree, you can be called a terrorist at a certain point) for natural diasters that happen EVER year.

How do you prepare for an earthquake? (honest question, we don't have them here)

Humans survived the black plague with no preperation, horrible medical skills, and 1/4 of the worlds population died, etc.

I genuinely believe that if I won the lottery I may end up like some of these people, with a secure bunker and all that. When I read the Zombie Survival Guide I honestly got a little scared and did take some of it a bit closer to heart than I maybe should have (not the cardio bit though - way too lazy).

Extra food and water, as well as a first aid kit. It all depends on how far you actually want to go, the more prepared you are the better off you'll be.

I would also feel more compelled to do something if something was going on. Maybe if it was WWIII or something along those line.

The world becomes a desert in 45 years and we all die because Old Man Jenkins won't give us any water from his private reserve. The end.
