I thought the Broodmother was eye [censored] at its worst. My poor eyes, why must they be savaged by this assault. :(

Edit
My bet is the guy who made the Broodmother is also behind these lovely little hell spawns.

Bit late for a review of the game now, but I'm about 35 hours in and so far it's a mixed bag for me. The characters are great, I love their personalities and the things they say. The moral choices you have to make and their consequences are done well.

However, it's beginning to feel like a chore to play. I realised today that they took Allies For Bruma and stretched that one quest out into an entire game: Go to one town to ask for help, they need you to do something first, then they send the help. Aaaand repeat.

Also I'm now level 14 and I've not found any better armor or weapons then the stuff I've been using since I was level 8 or 9: Juggernaut set, a nice shield and Oathkeeper sword enchanted with a master fire rune. In 14 levels I've only used 2 different swords. Alastair has been wearing the Blood Dragon set for ages and I can't see him finding anything better. Morrigan's upgraded robes were identical to her old ones, just with better stats. It seems like half the loot I get are Veridian daggers, useless Dwarven maces or health poultices. You can't loot corpses until you are totally out of combat, and even then you have to stand around waiting for the game to register them as dead.

I had initially hoped to replay the game with a different character but I can't see myself doing that now. I'm going to slog to the end to get my money's worth and leave it on the shelf until I get the urge to play it again.

Juggernaut, Blood, and the Robes of Possession are some of the best in the game. You just got them early.

Try getting the "Effort" set.

Now I'm very confused
In the Human noble origin of Origins it seems we (the Cousland second son\daughter) were badly lied to
We are told "During the rebellion against Orlais, several battles were fought near of highever. The Couslands supported the rebellion, but Howe sided with Orlais; by that Couslands were forced to seize harper's ford before it was all over. In keeping the town Couslands drove Orlais from its lands. "
But now today a new release for Awakenings says "Amaranthine was the first of the Fereldan arlings to fall to the Orlesian occupation. As the port city burned, its ruling family, the Howes, fled to the countryside to wage a guerrilla war against the invaders that lasted for generations. No matter how enormous of a bounty the Orlesians promised, they could not rid themselves of the wily Howes and their ever-growing number of sympathizers.

Really? I was under the impression that the Couslands and Howes were sworn allies who fought together during the rebellion...I'm like 90% sure Papa Cousland mentions fighting with Howe against Orlais (I've recently played the origin)...
Spoiler
that's why Howe's betrayal is so surprising...even though with Tim Curry voicing him, we all saw it coming a mile away!

Are you referring to a codex entry?

@Sneakmaster: a lot of the best weapons and armor can be bought...and the best sets that aren't bought are really spread out across all the areas and not as effective unless they're in an "item set" together

Edit: grammar

They say old times and smile faintly, but your old teacher in the library tells you the opposite (and is http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Cousland_Family_Historyof the story of Harpers Ferry whoops Ford ;) ), so I suggest the Lords are politely referring to having fought against each other, in the way polite men of action would.
Howe and Cousland are rivals, the shock wasn't that Howe attacked them but that he dared to do it when Sir Bryce is second only to the King (He's a Teryn) and possibly Loghain in the pecking order of nobility. We now know why he dared, but again this is a major flaw in the argument that Loghain didn't plan his betrayal, and another huge hole in the game's reality.

Guess I should have paid more attention to the teacher...told him to bugger off and teach the kids! I don't consider Loghain's motives a plot hole...just because he said he didn't plan Howe's actions doesn't mean he didn't condone them...
Spoiler
he does throw Howe under the bus during the Landsmeet and since the Warden silences Howe before he could defend himself in any formal way, I guess we'll never know
...that being said, it's weird that he allied himself with such a character of opposite moral standing...his deranged fear of Orlais notwithstanding

No, the point is Howe moves on the Couslands days before Ostagar, and Gaider and Co say Loghain didn't turn on the King until he saw the size of the Darkspawn host at Ostagar. But the only way Howe would be able to get away with killing all the Couslands would be if the King was dead and Loghain was protecting him, which he couldn't have known in advance. If Cailan had won at Ostagar Howe would have been gallow's bait. Nothing makes sense sadly. I love the game, but if they want a back history to be important, it has to make sense, and not be revised from episode to episode. I have spotted an even bigger howler, but i then forgot it during a big gaming session :D

Fair enough...at its worst, it's a hole...at best, it's a mcguffin...I'd still say that Howe used the oncoming Blight as the perfect opportunity to stage a coup and everything after that was a matter of fortuitous events...anyways...speaking of howlers...at one point, Wynne mentions it has been almost a year since the events at Ostagar...talk about a lack of urgency! I understand the distances between the various locations is quite a lot, but taking a year to get everything together? So much for Loghain the strategist <_<

"The Children" remind me of the Daemites of Bloodrayne. And that can't be a good thing.

I've decided not to watch any of the Awakenings trailers (minus the first one). Didn't really read up on Dragon Age before buying and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise, I'm hoping for the same thing with the expansion.

Which is generally why I prefer not to take what Gaider says on the forums seriously. Either he doesn't quite know everything and his posts are just some sloppy (and failed) way to address certain controversies and plot holes, or he's intentionally mucking things up to be as confusing as possible. I'll just take what happens in-game and in the novels, everything else is fanfiction.

I think Howe just acted on his own and he thought he would be able to get away with everything because of his alliance with Loghain... Loghain hated the Orlesians & hence would approve of HOwe wiping out the Couslands. Loghain would certainly be able to convince Cailan that it would all be for the best, considering the latter was one giant buffoon.

With Anora, it would be different... but still she wouldn't care about this much either. She's a power-hungry, backstabbing ***** that plays everyone like a fiddle.

Well, I'm very disappointed with the loot in this game. I killed the high dragon and didn't receive a single item that could be counted as an upgrade for any of my characters. I checked out the stats on the Effort set but they are way worse than the stats on the Juggernaut set. It looks like I'm going to spend 70% of my time in this game wearing the same armor and using the same weapons :(

I've done Redcliffe, I've done the Mage's Circle (wow the Fade portion of that was terrible), I've killed a high dragon, I've killed
Spoiler
Flemeth
, I've found Shale, and now I'm in the Deep Roads so I don't know how much is left. Maybe there's phat loot waiting for me in the Deep Roads somewhere.
