i always have nightmares
sometimes i like having nightmares (because im weird)
I'd say if you like it, it's not a nightmare. I, too, have dark themed dreams - only I'm not the victim in them - and consider them just that, dreams.

I read somewhere that frequent dreaming is a sign of high intelligence.

Thank you for that ego boost, I needed it.

I dream every night, and remember the general happenings of my dreams very well for a good while. I remember nightmares or emotionally straining dreams for years though. I can recall several nightmares/straining dreams from over a decade ago.

One, for instance that I had when I was 5:

I was with my now deceased grandmother sitting in the back of an old car my great grandmother used to drive, parked at my old baby-sitters house. The car began to move and we asked one another who was driving. It was a ghost, and we were already going 20mph by the time we noticed. It drove us into the nearest wall soon after, and that's when I woke up.

Another was just one of those falling dreams.

I had a dream frequently when I was around 7 or 8 years old about me waking up, and finding nobody around. Me being the last person on Earth. In one, I even saw myself fall over and die as an old man in the desert. In a variation of it I woke up in my house, but my house was empty and rotting. I ran through the neighborhood and found that I was in another reality after talking to some frizzy haired kid.

My regular dreams usually involve completely random things, but as of late include me resolving old conflicts. I've had a string of dreams where I gain respect from somebody who resents me, usually through becoming some kind of official figure or warrior.

An aside: no matter the context, Boethiah, my favorite Prince, often pops up in my dreams in his http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Boethiah&um=1&hl=en&safe=off&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=653&tbm=isch&tbnid=7lFpHwSXAISCXM:&imgrefurl=http://83.149.88.131/on_daedra_boethiah.html&docid=ZY_yEJIc1N_QXM&imgurl=http://83.149.88.131/images/on_daedra/boethiah.jpg&w=1280&h=1024&ei=4hI7T-MQqOzSAcjSudwL&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=466&vpy=181&dur=1296&hovh=201&hovw=251&tx=148&ty=100&sig=118138057494710415274&page=1&tbnh=132&tbnw=153&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0. He is usually just standing in the background, or mentoring me in some way. I've always been a bit unnerved by that, as Boethiah is a near mirror image of my darker personality traits that I would love to do away with.

Dreams are funny things. They say it's a drug called DMT produced by a gland in your brain that causes dreams. It's some kind of psychedelic drug that induces heavy halucinations. About as illegal as heroin.

I have the strangest, most [censored] up dreams ever. They are so freaky I don't think I can post them here. You'd all think I'm absolutely insane... Teehee:3 can verify this, I've told her about a couple of my dreams
They can't be any worse than Rhekarid's.

I can choose to induce dreaming or not. Seems if I go to bed earlier, I'm more likely to dream. I guess more time equals more dreaming. I keep a diary of the most interesting ones.

This one had to be one of the most fun:

Spoiler
Anyway, on this occasion, I was part of one of those urban exploration groups you see on TV, and we were going down through the abandoned depths of the building, about ten storeys below ground. It was kinda like Fallout, but with massive boilers, generators and heating machinery.

It transpired that there was an entire civilisation down there, of sickly reptilian things about four feet tall with black eyes and pallid green skin. Many of them were wearing black cloaks so as to blend in. My spelunking group decided to report this discovery to the outside world (which, knowing the types of government prevalent in my dreams, would have meant extermination).

We then got ambushed by a group of about 20 of the reptilians, and the rest of my group escaped through a disused maintenance hatch, locking the door behind them, but I was caught and restrained by the reptilians.

They took me to their leader, in an area of the basemant that housed an abandoned textile factory (I said it was a big building). Their leader was a Queen Xenomorph from the Alien franchise. I was told by a human who seemed to be their spokesman that the Alien was plotting to take over the world, and in order to do so had enlisted the help of the reptilians and some humans to communicate with the outside world.

They then took me over to a pillar drill and spun me into one of those disgusting fleshy cocoons they have. I was stuck there for quite a while, but fortunately nothing tried to impregnate me. I was woken and freed a while later by the human and the queen Alien. I was informed that the takeover was well underway, and that, for some reason, in order to better understand the human psyche, the Alien Queen wished to be instructed in the proper use of a human toilet.

Thus was I taken up through a series of tunnels into a bathroom in the above ground portion of the Building. In a process which may require brain bleach at some point, I showed the Alien Queen how to crap in a toilet. It would not flush, and it required repeated attempts with a plunger to make it go down. Deciding I couldn’t take much more of being an Alien’s care assistant, I managed to give the Alien and its emissary the slip, with the aid of a jammed fire door.

I escaped to the outdoors to see a world changed by Alien conquest. There were ragged bands of humans walking about looking afraid, as well as a fair bit of rubble and dust. Some policemen in blue uniforms and carrying shotguns started herding the people about. Apparently they were the lackeys of the Aliens, with whom they had cut a deal for global domination.

I tried to run for safety somewhere else, but I was confronted by one of the Aliens, near the passed out body of a police officer. I took his shotgun and tried to shoot the alien with it, but it just caught the shell in its mouth and spat it back at me. When the creature got bored and decided to eat the unconscious policeman, I ran for the cover of some small nearby houses, that were apparently abandoned.

As I got there, I saw a figure in a grey hooded top run down a dead end alleyway. It was Ellen Ripley, heroine of the Alien films. I imagined that would make survival easier. Some men came around the corner and said they were going to turn us in to the aliens for a reward. I made a noise like a distressed Ankylosaur (don’t ask) and such a creature came and attacked the men, with its head rather than its tail club like you’d imagine, while Ripley and I climbed up onto a fence out of the reach of the fight.

When it was over, and the Ankylosaur has wandered off to eat some grass in a neighbouring garden, I retrieved the pistol that one of the dino-brutalised men had been carrying, and I saw that one of the gardens had a huge slime encrusted hole in it, a tunnel used by the Aliens.
Turning around, I saw Ripley was being attacked by an Alien that had snuck up on her, and was melting her clothes with its acid spit/blood. I ran up to them and shot the thing four times in the head, and it went down. That is only the second time in one of my dreams that a firearm has ever worked as intended.

About ten second later, I got punched in the face by one of the blue uniformed policemen, who I promptly shot with the remaining two bullets as he tried to drive a syringe into my leg, presumably for cloning purposes since I’m such an awesome specimen of humanity. Ripley helped herself to his clothes since hers were all acid-y, and we went looking for a better place to hide. Then I woke up.

Disconcerting Ken Rolston/snuff movie mashup:

Spoiler
To begin with, I was sitting in a small chapel with some Bethesda devs. Ken Rolston was there, not sure about the others. I was explaining to them with great consternation that the dimensions in the church and the locations of the windows should match the dimensions outside. Ken Rolston looked as if this was a Revelation to him, but the guy next to him with a grey cardigan just kinda looked ahead gormlessly and nodded. I don't think they took it in.

The scene changed however, and I was then looking upon a hotel room, as if through a grainy old tv camera. I watched as two greasy looking men came into the room from the corridor, and appeared to be lying in wait for someone. It was horrible, they were talking about sixually assaulting the room's occupant.

This occupant returned, a pale, dark haired girl wearing a white shift dress. The two men jumped out at her, and without a look of surprise she pulled a kitchen knife on them, slashing the first man straight across the stomach, so that he fell down in shock.

The second, startled, tripped as she jammed the knife straight through the front of his neck. The girl then turned back to where the first man lay gurgling, and, humming a tune, she knelt down near his head and just started twisting the knife in his eye, humming all the while.
She carried on in this manner for a while, until the man died, and she then stood up, put the knife on a small table next to a weird looking little book, and walked out again.

What she did wasn't particularly horrible, they did see to deserve it. It was just the way she acted throughout the whole ordeal, no sadistic enjoyment, no pity, it was as if she saw the torture as just something that had to happen, a matter of routine.

Most emotionally draining, for some reason:

Spoiler
I find the tattered schoolbag and diary of this 14 year old girl, apparently my old babysitter (I never had a babysitter) who just happened to go missing in 1992. Rather than being in the first person, I was kind of a disembodied perspective, following her around her day to day life. I barely existed, but I was watching all the crap this imaginary person went through. You would really end up empathizing with her.

I find out how she goes missing. She gets transported to 2010 by an angry malevolent energy vampire, who kills her with a flash of blue lightning in order to use her life force to resurrect its dead mate.

Having seen this, the perspective then shifts to my position in the present day. Horribly affected by this, I decide, as one does in dreams, to use a very fast train that will hopefully travel fast enough to send me back in time to 1992 so that I can stop her ever being sent into the future and killed.
It doesn't quite work, and sends me back to 2005 at my old school, on the anniversary of her disappearance. There are posters of her face everywhere, like shrines almost. I go and sit in my old biology class, wondering how to get back home myself. Then I woke up.

I never normally have dreams that are quite that emotional, that was really heartbreaking when you've sat through and watched it all, seen the girl's day to day life. Oh, and 1992 was really, really bleak.

My dreams are usually pretty normal. Like, just me hanging out with someone I like or something.

A few weirder dreams I've had that I remember:
- I'm walking through a forest that keeps changing colors, and I walk by several holograms of people and animals, and it's all a very creepy drug-inspired dream.

- I'm in a large MC Escher-esque room that is filled with the naked zombies of people I know. I am, however, not a zombie but also naked, and the other zombies have not yet realized that I'm not a zombie, despite that they are all green and I am still the pale peach color of a white person. I sit nervously for a long time, trying not to move or bring any attention to myself for fear they will notice and attack me. Toward the end of the dream, the zombie of this girl I had a crush on at the time makes the realization and alerts the others, and then I wake up.

- I've had a few dreams about UFOs that aren't really worth telling in detail but worth mentioning. I've also had this weird sensation during some dreams where everything in existence implodes upon itself. That's the best description I can give, but it's really frightening and always startles me awake.

- And for the Skyrim fans, I had a dream before Skyrim came out that I was playing the beginning of the game, and I actually went through an area that was extremely similar to a real area in the game at the beginning, when you're escaping through Helgen's castle and you go through the path with water running through it and the tunnel. However, in my dream, I encountered a Dremora there, who dropped a full set of Daedric armor, and I was just like "What? Really? Daedric gear already? Did I just get really lucky with the random monster generator or did they really plan a full set of Daedric so early in the game?"

I kept having a recurring dream of being a Khajit on a big ship as it docked in a port. When I got the game, I went to Solitude docks as a Khajit and was struck with a bizarre sense of Deja Vu.

Saw something similar to Giant's Grove too.

i always have nightmares

thx  feel free to post some more (try to find the weirdest dream and the most frightening dream you ever had, if you have time)

i ALWAYS have nightmares.. being chased, stabbed, trapped or being in prison.. stuff like that. sometimes i like having nightmares (because im weird) its like being a star in my own horror movie. apart from ones that include family members getting hurt.. i cant stand those :(

sometimes i scream in my sleep and wake myself up

I haven't had true nightmares in a long while now (i.e. waking up frightened) but I had them a lot as a child. I had recurring dreams of ghosts who I couldn't see, only feel, and a most of them were evil. Another recurring one I had was being in pitch darkness or semi-darkness and the lights wouldn't turn on, I'd spend the dream panicking and flicking the switch hoping they'd work.

These days I sometimes have dreams of darker themes but they don't often frighten me in waking life, some disturb me though.

An example:
I dreamt I was in a bar/pub with a couple of men and a woman who worked there. Suddenly a fight broke out between one of the men and the woman so I tried to help her escape and brought her outside, but the man followed and grabbed her back. A lot of people had gathered around watching. I tried to get her back again but the man brought forward a huge knife and slashed my arm with it. He then attacked and murdered the woman by cutting her into pieces, but I didn't see what was happening (thank god xD), just heard it.
Later after the event (the dream skipped to this part) I walked into a warehouse and saw her body parts on the floor, but her head still seemed alive with the eyes looking around (this was the part that freaked me out the most). Another woman was there carrying an urn for her funeral.

I've had a few dreams to do with murder or killing, thankfully they aren't that frequent.

And here is a less brutal, more "weird" type of dream that has stuck well in my memory back from 2007:
It was night and I was walking through a really beautiful forest though it was dark (unlit), there was a path through the trees and a wooden bridge, not sure where it led. I was with some other people, we started to cross the bridge but turned back. We went out of the forest over a field and small hills and reached a building. I looked up to the sky and saw the moon; I had a camera on me and tried taking pictures of it. Then as I watched, the moon started moving across the sky (visibly) and rotating all the way around the Earth anticlockwise, getting faster and coming closer to the Earth with every round. More moons appeared in the sky. The moons all closed the Earth in and made it smaller. My point of view in the dream changed and I was now looking down onto the world and saw it be covered in a black void, and I heard a voice speaking though I don't know what it was saying. Afterwards, I went to sleep. On waking up everything seemed back to "normal" - I was back down on the Earth, but it was a new world, like it had been reborn.

sometimes if i wake from a dream, then go straight back to sleep, the dream will continue from where it left off

Hah, I also remember a dream where I was trying to escape, but got caught. I woke up and realised where I had gone wrong. When I fell asleep again I entered the same dream at a point before I started escpaping, except this time I knew what to do and I escaped successfully :P It was like reloading a "saved dream" :D

For me my strangest dreams seem to be when everything seems almost real so it's almost like another reality, and something strange usually happens when I dream like that. The more normal dreams for me are usually more blurred or inconprehensible.

Last nightmare I had and can remember well was when I was 12-ish. In it I was playing football and then ended up in my kitchen getting choclate but a power cut happened, so I went to my room - which had a red glow under the door - and when I went in the walls were dripping in something and there was this thing *http://www.andycore.com/_doc/AndyCore_Crouched.jpgin the corner on top of my TV and I remember it lunging foward at me or something and then I woke up.....Strange thing was a similar thing happened in RL; The red glow was the lava lamp, the thing was my brother trying to frighten me, the dripping would be the juice that spilled after he jumped - or even the lava lamp being symbolised.
I've had a few dreams come tru they leave me like  for a few minutes.

My good dreams I can't really talk about but damn they look better in my dreams than RL
I also dream of zombie invasions and defending my friends and area.

* - I've no idea who that is but they're crouched like the thing from the dream.

I can still remember one of my first nightmares. I went downstairs in my house from my room and out the back door (that's made of glass and see-through) there was a skeleton layed there and began to move. It didn't really seem like a dream to me.

I remember a lot of my dreams. Some of them can be quite funny, I had one that was made up entirely of puns about the game Portal. I was knocking over orange boxes ('the orange box' being the set the game comes in) to win cake, but I never got the cake.

I've always been curious about what colour people dream in. I usually dream in full colour, but once I had a horrible dream where everything was in sepia. Does anyone not dream in colour?

I think I dream mostly in black and white, with a splash of colour here and there to emphasise the importance (?) of stuff. I'm not sure, though.

The only dream that ever stuck with me was one I had after reading a zombie book. I dreamed I was stuck up a tree-house and was about to be eaten by endless hordes of zombies, so I shot myself in the head with a crossbow.

Dying in a dream is possibly the single strangest experience I've ever had. Sometimes I wake up from dreams and have to spend a few minutes realizing I'm awake and it was just a dream. Usually I only have about an hour of disquiet but this time it was extremely, extremely unsettling.

I do often have very disturbing, freaky or upsetting dreams. A month or so ago I was almost afraid to go to sleep because I was having very disturbing dreams, but I tend to forget them by the end of the day, unless they really disturbed me. I don't keep a dream diary or anything.

Oh, another of my dreams involved me being pursued by a mass murderer. I managed to hide in a pile of corpses, but I was drowning in blood and gore. She found me alive by stabbing my hand with a needle, so I jumped out a window, then I was being chased through very open forests. There was also something to do with a friend of mine being abducted, or murdered, in that dream. Actually that one I believe could also be attributed to a book, because the pile of corpses 'scene' was exactly what appeared in the book Afraid which I had just finished. Many of my dreams are also influenced by games I am playing. I'm not actually dreaming about the game, but the dream contains elements or characters that are very, very similar to those in games. I'll often wake up feeling cold but drenched in sweat, my heart racing, and I need to turn the light on very, very quickly :D

Most of my dreams consist on nightmares only :obliviongate: . I missed the nights when I would have good dreams although I did have a She-Ra dream once---but I don't remember all the details that went on in the dream.

I have a recurrent nightmare where the brakes on my car don't work. I'm going slow between the traffic and there's a car stopped in front of me in a red light. I keep pressing the pedal and it seems to slow down a bit but never really stops. I never crash, it always keeps slowing down forever without ever stopping or crashing, as if the space between us is growing larger. I usually wake up after pressing on the pedal for so long... :P

Mostly colour, though some dreams are like they take place at night, so they're quite dark. But occasionally I have "bluescale" dreams.. in shades of blue, so to speak (also fairly dark).

Most of my dreams are re-occurring and are located in the factory that I worked at for 31 years. The machines and equipment are familiar but different.
There is often the sense that I'm retired yet am there working for extra money and don't really need to be there. Mostly it seems more like socializing though.
Strangely, when I was still working I used to have re-occurring dreams about still being in high school. I don't have those any more.

Another re-occurring dream is that I'm driving a car either from the back seat or from the passenger front seat, somehow magically and leisurely.
When the driving situation gets tense and requires more concentration and attention, I climb back over into the drivers seat behind the wheel.

I had a disturbing dream/nightmare before. I guess it was because of the game I played and movie I watched haha. So, I watched Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. And I am sure those who saw the movie remembers the part where Darth Vader is in a room, brandishing his lightsaber in front of the Jedi children after he was commanded to wipe out the Jedi Temple..

So in the evening, I played the Overload game, where you are an axe-wielding brute walking around slashing and cutting down things. I played a good three hours.

In my dream, I was holding an axe and I was inside of a hospital where it was a baby dormitory and I was angry. I won't explain any further, just that I woke up thinking why in the hell did I dream about that and what I needed to do to forget it.

I never forgot it.

I dream often of recapp days, but I've been having a recent burst of Lucidity lately so I often do things different or start flying around.

but for Advanced dreams I've had lately have been of Airports or being in them, I know better of what they actually represent and often pick them apart for meaning. for example the Airport, metal detector, type of coins the metal detector detected on me and the number of them, and the lighting in the airport all related to each other so that was telling.

the FUNNIEST Dream I've had, was a Lucid one. I was playing Star wars, and I'm in the shaft where Luke/leia swing across/Obiwan deactivates tractor. and Darth Vader is there coming at me with his like saber, so I'm like "Ha! I'm the Dragonborn Tin Can", and I grab him by the shoulder and basically scream FUUUUUUUUUUUUUSSS blowing his helmet off and sending him down the shaft.

good times...goood times.

I have had gaming dreams...I'll be navigating (as in the sense of actually being there) in a colorful and vivid dungeon-like area, and think in the dream..."This place is different, I've never seen this before....Oh, it's a mod".
Seriously.

I always have really weird & vivid dreams. I think the most interesting ones are the ones where I die at the end. For example:

I was on vacation with my family, and I went up to the hotel room by myself. I discovered a really really tiny gun (smaller than the palm of my hand) in a desk drawer. I thought it was just a toy, so I pulled the trigger to see what would happen. Turns out it was real, and the bullet started richocheting all around the room, bouncing off the walls and furniture, until it eventually hit me in the chest. I fell to the floor and grabbed a pen and paper that were within reach ,and tried to write a note to my family before I died so they'd know it was an accident. Right before I died, I could feel the blood gushing out of my heart and filling my chest. The moment I died, I woke up and my chest was majorly burning (like heartburn).

My most recent weird dream was a couple nights ago, in which I discovered that my grandma was a serial killer and my grandpa was helping her cover it up by hiding the bodies.

My dreams are normally in colour. I don't think I've ever dreamed in black and white, but I have had dreams with sepia-ish tones. I think one of my first bad dreams was kind of blurry/grainy, with the tone beiing like a yellowish green, I think like the colour of those old sepia monitors, which may have had influened me. It almost seemed like the dream was like a vision of a bad memory.

Maybe you (or someone else) should start a new thread with a poll, to find out how many people dream in colour, or sepia tones, or b/w.
