it's still profitable and enjoys over 1.3 million subscribers. I don't think a game needs 11 million people playing it to be a success. Bioware/EA have already stated they'd still be making money with only 500,000 subscribers. Essentially the only thing the Old republic has lost is the people who played for a few months to try it out and see what it was all about, still has a strong fanbase.

The reason WoW is so popular is because it IS the cookie-cutter fantasy formula that caters to most playstyles. Think of any staple of the fantasy genre: Orcs, Dragons, Magic, Good Vs. Evil, Wildly variant biomes, fantastical races from every conceivable cultural mythos, it just has everything.

By the very nature of TESO being (for the most part) faithful to the lore of TES, it cannot accomplish this. Playing as a tiny little gnome with a huge sword riding around on a giant dragon being tailed by a baby hippogryph is not an experience anyone is going to see in TESO, it doesn't fit the lore in any way, shape, or form. How do you cater to the player who wants to play a pretty little night elf and collect pets in her anime-esque environment by handing her Skyrim?

You just can't hope to svck out every player from an MMO that caters to such a divisive playerbase as WoW does, instead you need to focus on building the best possible game for the demographics that your IP already caters to.

At this point in the gaming world saying "Game will kill WoW" is a cliche regardless of whether you mean it to be. ^.^ I'll bite. Not even Titan will kill WOW. Hell, UO and EQ are still alive and trucking. WoW didn't kill EQ or UO, so how can anything hope to kill WoW? The phenomenon that is WoW will not die a quick death. I expect WoW will at least break the 20 year mark and still bring in profits. UO is still making money at the 14+ year mark. That's a game that started with 2D sprites. Blizzard plans for WoW to be profitable and is releasing an expansion at the same time they release Titan. Now the link below was leaked a long time ago but has proved ridiculously accurate. I no longer play WoW, but it has my respect.

Why does anyone think that any game will "kill" WoW?
Saying that implies that some game coming out will suddenly make WoW fans... not fans any more.

How does that make sense? The only thing that would kill WoW is if WoW started to svck, or fell significantly behind in their capabilities.
Neither are true, and TESO isn't going to make them true. WoW is in control of its own fate.

TESO is not in control of any other game's success or failure.

Can't tell if http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaqC5FnvAEc or serious.

That was hilarious!

As for the topic, I don't think TES:O will bring enough to the table to revolutionise the MMO genre. However, I'll wait and see what follows.

why you want to see wow die

Wowis the game to kill all of bad quality new game
he must live... he is a guardian
Why do you think it has been translated into 10 languages... it will be 10 ....
And I confirm to you that it will be at least 5 million people who play wow in 2020
It will have an extension every year ... they have developed new tools they need to spit the contents quickly
Azeroth has become a real land for the community such as Canada or Egypt ...
Even titan will not beat wow..... titan will die with wow

But Elder Scrolls Online will kill wow ....if they develop the idea that I have mentioned on my post
Save Elder Scrolls Online
and after 2 years the time that Elder Scrolls Online is translated into 10 languages

PS ... Another thing that can beat wow is a new game concept on that infernal machine called tablet ipad imad ikad....

KoA:R is a shallow souless game that simply copies God of War combat. You can play the game from start to finish, and never die, only pressing fast attack.

that type of unbalance, shallow nonsense wouldn't last 1 month in a MMO pay to play model.
I still think it's a decent game which has some interesting ideas (lot of them kicking Skyrim's ass).
Also, I'm just interested, not hyped or something like that.
I agree that it needs an extra level of difficulty, though!

Games don't kill each other.
This is kids talk, "my dad have 10 cars!" "my dad has 10000 cars!"

*pats the kids on the head, so-so, all games will co-exist, do not worry*
This..

I dont play wow, I have tried it a few times but I always preferred Lotro. There has been loads of big MMO releases over the past few years that was gonna "Kill wow" and yet its still here.
The only thing that will kill wow is age, they have clearly run out of ideas of what to do with the game and i think its pretty much reached its limit and on the way out.
I think Teso will probably be the final nail in the coffin for wow I will be surprised if it manages to recover after Teso is realsed

Not if you were playing on the hardest difficulty.
I played KOAR on hardest, its probably one of the easiest games I've ever played. All those possible combos with wasted potential, all I had to do was spam 1 button.

And the lack of jumping also really svcked. Game was forgotten pretty fast, Ken messed up.

i dont think a game can be just alright when it has ELDER SCROLLS behind it.

i'll admit i'm a really devoted fan of the entire series but i am honestly looking forward to this game. WoW died a long time ago for me and this will get me back into mmo's.

i would normally agree with the statement but with a new developer creating it iam extremely worried

OP, Look, I am a huge TES really devoted fan, hell, I thought Redguard was an alright game, and I am EXTREMELY excited for TES:O, but let's be realistic here. If Star Wars, LoTR, and even [censored] DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS couldn't take down the big WoW, then The Elder Scrolls Online won't. No way in hell. WoW is a Leviathan that gobbles all of it's competition and excretes them out into a disgusting, dried out pile of dung that only a few Blind and Deaf flies will even mildly tolerate eating. I have a hunch ZeniMax might be a bit smarter than that.

Ahh Hello.. Bioware and bethesda have been like the biggest RPG competitors to me.. Bioware's fan base is PC based as Bethesda's is console base.. Do the math..

And I like a MMO with a good community and its not looking to good.. Such as how this thread came to be and plenty more ~ no offense to some...

Elder Scrolls fanbase is not primarily consoles, are you crazy?

World of Warcraft is terrible with graphics, plot, story, content.... You have to be a regect to chose it of elderscrolls... this is the one francise I nerd out about for good reason.... when Bethesda does something, they do it right.

agreed, Blizzard is going to HATE Bethesda after this. They dug their own grave however... all they make is strategy games. Don't get me wrong I LOVED Star Craft when I was in gradeschool. I'm also sure that Diablo 3 will get them some great revenue... but Bethesda puts out Role Playing power houses, and if you forget their flop franchises like "Brink" or "Rage" you have a company that is paving the way in how the gaming industry is going to function in the 21st century.

No. Hell no. Not in a million years.

Anyone who thinks this mmo or ANY of the upcoming ones will kill wow are deluded fan boys. Its just not possible. The only thing that will kill WoW is oddly enough...WoW. Unless the developers mess something up so badly that customers leave by the MILLIONS, it will probably continue on and on. Upcoming games may take some subscribers away, for a time. Quite a few MMOs have done that, but none have ever kept the initial surge and continue to grow like WoW has done. Plus, it always seems like they go right back to wow sooner or later (the ones that didn't stick with the new mmo).

For a new game to kill WoW, it will have to revolutionize the MMO genre the same magnitude that WoW has done. And while we see developers starting to do slightly more innovative stuff, its going to take more than what we have now to do WoW in for good.

Seriously, any of you who really think this game is going to kill WoW, please stay in school, you obviously aren't done yet. The fanboyism (I guess thats a word) in this forum is getting dangerously obnoxious. Its would seem that some people here are already in love with the game without ever playing it. And most of them are the people who condemn others for hating it without ever playing it. I'm sure you see the problem...
