ESO's future does not look good, in my opinion

Post » Thu Dec 12, 2013 3:43 pm

Perception is reality. People will expect it to be. Casuals arent gonna want to pay $15 a month. And a lot of Elder Scrolls fans say it is not "Elder Scrolls enough"..
Where does this leave this game?

Welcome to opinions, bro. We all have one, and few of them line up. I personally love the game as a long time ES and MMO player.

I feel like this needs to pointed out again and again as often as possible.

Preach it. I know ZOS wants to capture the hearts and imaginations of as many TES fans as it possibly can, but in the end the "single-player only" puritans are the ones that are dragging this game into the dirt. Its a fantastic game and does a great job at being exactly what it is, which is an MMO in the Elder Scrolls universe.

The closer we get to release, the more renown the game will have and thus the more people will hear about it. A lot of the time, the people who have only just heard about it will shout and scream about this or that (often through ignorance and/or stubbornness) on the forums all over the place and the general public will start to genuinely think the game is getting worse and worse (hype works both ways, folks). The amount of one-line comments i've seen where a someone has stated 'yeah i'm in the ESO beta and it svcks man' is laughable. But this stuff gets eaten up by the herd and regurgitated as fact.

ESO will stand or fall on its own merits. Personally I can see a lot of merit and a lot of potential. The public often question or remorsefully state that 'it's not innovative' or 'it's not revolutionary'. Frankly, in the MMO scene, there isn't a lot that can be innovated or revolutionised, just evolved. So the best we can hope for is a game that holds our interest and through this, has a longevity that surpasses the competition. Fine by me.

This new PvP trailer looks fun. It isn't really any different to the footage we've seen in the original trailer of the large scale siege, but then again, it doesn't need to look any different. That original footage had a siege, siege weaponry, hundreds of players, decent framerate and lots going on. This new PvP trailer is just to keep ESO on the scene. And frankly, i'm cool with that.

Speculation on any and all trailers is rampant. They all get picked to pieces. The reason we do this is because we're starved of what we want; we want to play ESO.

Just my rambling 2 cents.

I don't get it, gameplay looks fine in this pvp trailer to me?

It does sadden me that there seem so many negative opinions in the link you posted.

I don't know what MMO's you guys have access to...

But really this game looks really great in terms of graphics, and combat, and decent questing.

I can't think of a single MMO that had a good trifecta of decent writing, good graphics, engaging combat, and reasonable freedom.

For gameplay there is about one MMO I like: Space Cowboy/ Ace Online.

This game looks awesome! I know it won't be as tight as a single player action/ rpg game, but it's an MMO

I know it's not as pretty as the newest single player game on the market, but it's an MMO.

I'm sorry ya'll but I can't think of a single game that has this extensive features that they are releasing for an MMO. I really don't know what you are expecting.

Wildstar: Whoopie they have a good artist, and they implemented telegraphs on spells. ESO has awesome combat, and first person.

By the way did I mention First Person Perspective.

That is a deal-sealer for me. Even in that hectic battle First Person looked amazing!

If I were making a game, and I had hardcoe followers, I would not care about public opinion

And really, if you cared about the game, you would not be making excuses not to play it, I do not think you had any intention of playing it, successes do not rely on everyone playing the game. As TOR put it, and as Eve has, it only takes 500k subscribers to float and be profitable

Here is the issue, though. What if it folds all its dignity, becomes a clone and is still a failure?

Well, the game isn't a clone of WoW, so....

I'd say, in the current MMO climate, folding and becoming a clone is one of the guaranteed ways to sink the ship anyway.

The most important thing for the success of the game is the Fun Factor. Is the game fun to play, does the game make time go by so fast that before you know it you are late for work and in a hurry to get to work so you do not get fired.

I can not say if this game has it since I have not played, but with past experience with games from Bethesda and the TES games I had tonnes of enjoyment that only a few games have been able to match.

It is still a few months away from release that is still good time for ZOS to work and improve on the game.

Fortunately its not doing that.

What we have here is a severe case of "What? This isn't Skyrim Online? MAAAAD." Those people will either come around, or they won't. Why they seem to think they're the majority is beyond me.

They havent done any animation polish yet, its still beta. this was the same complaint in GW2. the animations and graphics were bad in the open beta but 2 months later at game launch they looked very good and everyone was imprissed. ESO still has 4+ months before launch so im sure the animations will be much better

I'd prefer to make my opinion after the game has release and I have put a significant amount of time into it before I make one, instead of jumping to assumptions as is common practise with the MMO community.

Are the animations terrible? They certainly need work done to them, certain emotes display the same impressions you'd get from a person overacting, like the cooking animation. The general fight animations look alright as well.

the Problem with the people on the internet and taking their word is that a lot of people seem to, for some stupid reason, think it is going to basically be Skyrim online, despite Skyrim being in many people's opinion the WORST of the Elder scrolls games. ESO seems to be more of a combo with Morrowind and Oblivion than anything to do with Skyrim. At first, it is going to hurt because people are going to expect Skyrim Online, rage on the forums that it is not that (and on second thought, we already do have that) then quit, then realize they were being stupid in the first place and come back to play.

Well put. As for Wildstar, I had my hands on it and you are more than likely spot on. I'll be waiting for the masses to cringe.

@donjin1 the last time I seen you posting was against the sub model I am guessing that since they don't want posts about subscription model you figured you would sneak this in to start a conversation on it again. I think the whole premise of this thread to start that upagain just my opinion. I actually think the game still is coming along very well and will only get better as they polish it.

It's just more of the same. One guy comes waltzing into the forums creates a topic saying that ESO is going to fail because he sees 5 people talking about it and then just leaves.

this is probably because some people are saying ESO is Skyrim with friends... and then are thinking that its skyrim will all the same stuff but then with more players.

Let's stay away from using that altogether. Because of the flaming connotations it often has in forums, we block it.

Thanks

well no . What will doom eso or propel it to greatness has nothing to do with animations or trailers. Its what is contained in its mid and endgame. That will determine its burn off retention .and from there how fast they update and evolve the game play will determine the churn and frequency of returns

Which would be good since "the public" doesn't have an own opinion but will always follow the lead of the hardcoe [insert entity name].

It's the same everywhere you look: games, books, films, cars, drinking, religion, ...

I would go as far how it is in the beginning as well. Since if the game is not fun at the beginning what will make me want to stay to mid game or end game.

You are basing your argument on three things: That ESO is a themepark and not a sandbox, the PvP trailer (graphics + animation), and public opinion. If you hold WoW to these exact same standards, you are in no way making a sound argument.

So ESO is a themepark, so is WoW, by many people's definition so are TES games. Why can't a themepark game be like TES, and why can't a themepark game in general be successful if its using the TES title? You look like you haven't one your research, I've seen so many features that scream TES despite it being a themepark it's not even funny. If you're holding ESO to the exact same standards as both WoW and TES at the same time I don't even know how to explain to you why that's wrong.

This is a PvP trailer, they're showing off the PvP, why didn't you complain about the quakecon video if you had gripes about the gameplay.

Public opinion: You're expecting ESO to have a similar level of reputation as WoW upon release.. what? If a game somehow manages to get at WoW's level of publicity and acceptance at launch, when WoW had plenty of time to build up that reputation, people will start comparing that game to WoW and not the other way around.

The public opinion of ESO is nowhere near as bad as your biased mind is making it out to be, why then are there so many that want to get into beta? Stop putting out the argument that ESO is bad without providing any decent evidence or comparisons.
