ESO's future does not look good, in my opinion

What--other than animations you consider sub-standard--didn't you like about the trailer? I suppose folks could disagree whether the trailer accompanying a release date announcement should be broader in focus, rather than have it highlight a specific aspect of gameplay, but it's not as though this is the first trailer for the game.

I'd recommend that anyone unsure whether it's a game they want to play wait for open beta and test drive it. If, after that, you decide to buy a box, you can play for a month and then consider whether you enjoyed it enough to want to subscribe. Either way, there's no need to get worked up over impressions based on partial information. What will count is whether the folks who play it at release have fun. If they do, folks will hear about it. If they don't, they'll hear that, too. What folks have heard--or even think they've experienced--to date won't amount to a hill of beans if folks they know start talking about how much fun they had taking that keep or exploring that island the night before. Indeed, it was folks talking about WoW in Morrowind General that got me first to try an MMO, something I'd never imagined I'd do.

The majority of people should NOT be the ones playing a AAA mmo. The majority will play ftp and browser based junk because that is the middle of the road to bargan basemant stuff. A premium mmo is by very definition something that the top end players go for.

People just need to realize that if they want to shop at walmart all the time they will have a house full of cheep junk and there is no reason that cant make them happy. personally I prefer only a few things in life but I like them to be of higher quality and I am glad I still have the option of a high quality game in this age of mass produced mediocrity.

+10 on the graphics!

+10 on the artistic style

+10 for using real game footage

I personally thought that trailer looked excellent but I guess being a mature long time pvp mmo player I am the focus target market. I am no in my 40's and I got my mmo start on AC's Darktide back in 1999,2k and left to be in daoc for launch day. Then on to Shadowbane and Darkfall. That's not the route of your typical mmo player who fixates on endgame raid content or ftp browser based games and I accept that. I really do feel this game was made by people like me for people like me. And it has a lot of element for everyone, but I do think they kept a core philosophy and I hope it pays off for them in the long run. I know a lot of people wont pay sub for a game and If I don't play it at least 2-3 times a week for around 20 hrs I wont either. But the stuff offered by cyrodiil are the only thing that can keep me playing. Certainly not pve raids. that kind of stuff gets old real fast and the reward is just pixel loot. Not the strong bonds of community that I feel in a game focused on factional pvp struggle.

It was a pvp trailer.
You've seen into the future have you? Because you don't like the trailer it's going to fail? Pathetic .

Okay, my honest opinion: the trailer is decent, but not great. Some good moments, like the bridge confrontation, the group sneaking behind the tents, etc. But...

The voice over was awful. If you're going to make someone do an English accent make sure they CAN first, or, better yet, hire an English actor. There are plenty of them in the US.

That small nitpick aside, the real problem is how they are portraying the combat here IMO. It looks stifled, stilted and much like WoW or TOR with the HUD elements turned off. Suffice it to say, it does not properly sell how the combat actually is. Just my two cents, can't really go into more detail but yeah...there it is.

As others have said, my standards are just fine, thanks. There are a couple of things that I would *really* like to see changed (the requirement for summons to be slotted on both bars, for example), and yes, they'd better get their backsides in gear and fix the animations. That said, this is shaping up to be the one MMO that finally makes me pay a sub after ~10 years. If your 'high standards' involve ESO being more like WoW and Wildstar, then our respective standards are practically antithetical.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot to add my usual request when this comes up: please promise you'll come back in a year so we can point and laugh? It'll just be no darn fun without you. :D

Exactly. The only danger I see for ESO is if they cave in under pressure and change their model to appease the F2P, WoW and Wildstar crowd. I hope ZOS has willpower to stick to their vision.

Amen, brother. I think Wildstar will do a good job mopping up the angry WoW abandoners and Borderlands lovers (seriously it looks like Borderlands the MMO, which sounds like a cool idea to me tbh), while ZOS will get the people looking for "something else". My attachment to TESO comes not from the TES name that I love, but from the fact that it goes back to some older MMO roots similar to DAOC.

Dude, they had 4 million beta sign ups. They have 1.6 million likes on Facebook. Wildstar only has 129k.

ESO is going to blow that game out of the water.

You seem to have had a negative reaction to this one trailer, but there are a lot of other people who are very excited for this game.

I don't understand the animations critique at all to be honest, but is there anything else you don't like about the game?

If there's one thing you can say for ZOS, its that they listen to fan feedback.

Seriously, who cares about graphics/animations if the concept and game mechanics are great?

Or the other way round... if the game mechanics are [censored], the game will be [censored], regardless of nice graphics.

BTW, i really like the graphics... finally a somehow "mature", non-comic graphic style!

And yep, I too hope they stick with p2p model and don't chance to ftp...

Wow, I guess I've been wasting these past 9 years by not playing WoW. I mean, if it's that good, then damn I should have jumped on that at ground level.

And Wildstar? Haven't actually heard of that one. I've been too busy being interested in ELDER SCROLLS.

Fact is, people will play what they want to play, and won't play what they don't. Instead of trying to tear down a product, why don't you try to build up a product? Here, I have an example: "Star Wars The Old Republic was the most fun I've ever had playing PvP (this coming from the most PvE centric person I've ever met), and the storylines for each class made the game fun and interesting. I don't really play it much anymore because I got back into modding Skyrim, and then Disgaea D2 got released. My gameplay is kinda cyclical like that." Now, you try. Go on. I know you can do it.

Sadly, a great many people hold far too much stock in the visuals. Visuals are important, but not the be-all end-all. I found the trailer very honest, which is refreshing, though I still feel it does not do ESO's combat justice at all. At least it showed you NOTHING that you couldn't do in the game.

Something I can't stand are the Blur-style cinematic trailers that are pre-rendered CG video that show you all kinds of things that are IMPOSSIBLE in the actual game.

Case-in-point Planetside 2's trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0dAP8B_sLM - 99% of the things that happen in the trailer can never happen in the game.

Granted we had one of those for ESO too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jNT5cMwxw0), but at least there it felt like most of the stuff happening was at least possible, save for maybe the Breton swinging over the rope bridge like that. Then again we haven't seen much of the PvP mechanics so maybe there are some towers that you can do that kinda thing on.

I'll add this here as it fits the topic.

http://m.ign.com/articles/2013/12/10/the-hype-sheet-what-2014-games-do-you-want-most

ESO is nearly the most anticipated MMO in this poll. It is being beaten by The Division. Wildstar is floundering in this poll. I'll admit, its the first I've seen skewed so much this way, most likely due to IGN's mass audience and its not an either or poll.

Sorry for the mobile link.

I have been playing MMORPGs since 1999, starting with Asheron's Call, Everquest, Anarchy Online, Guild Wars, World Of Warcraft, DarkFall, and Tera. Not the mention various free to play titles. From what I've seen and the philosophy behind this game world's immersion is excellent and amoung the best I've seen. It stands alone as an unique icon in the gaming community and will continue to do so. Make what speculations you wish to make towards this title but I believe that the developers behind this game really want to see it shine and will take the time and effort that is needed to complete a breath taking experience filled with a wealth of content. To stray from an optimistic mindset due to a few trailers and some bad reviews which plague all MMO and non MMO alike, seems childish. Not to say you're opinion is invalid but to spread the light of a different disposition. We can raise an online world upon the pedestal but in the end the fun a player can have in any form of experience is purely dictated by that individuals imagination and potential to generate new ideas with the tools they've received. When life gives you lemons, the choice is yours to make lemonade or something brand new.

bah they are flat but its expected in beta . Animations and high res are the last things they put in the final build. And they will continue to get better after launch a lot of hoopla over nothing

I have played MMOs for a long time, and after committing huge time in WoW, EvE online lately and other free to play MMOs i can only say +10 points to ESO devs for releasing a unedited video of the game.

How many game companies have you seen, releasing pure game cutscenes with zero editing ? as marketing chips ?

none?

Lets take Total War : Rome 2 as an example

1. They promised Epic siege battles, there was none (they had video material (pure lies)).

2. They promised a deep campaign for us, there was none (they cutted aspects off it and never to this date added them back, we will prolly see them in a DLC).

3. They promised polished game, as they had 40% more money to be used to the game, the game had 500+ bugs.

4. After the time of release and to this date, all of the above have not been fixed.

5. On the negative side even more, Rome2 Devs released edited material for the playerbase that was not in game, to increase sales.

6. o and Rome2 devs had gaming videos on areas that does not exist in the actual game, so more lies. (and yea, they lied heavily to the playerbase).

NOW, lets check ESO,

1. They release unedited PvP video for us

1.1. the Konk said in Shoddycast interview that they will polish stuff heavily before release (note its still early beta, and imo it looks good).

2. They have 5 months to polish the game

3. We have a release date

4. No lies detected thus far (marketing oriented stuff).

5. Devs r very close with the beta testers and review channels (big plus, i havent seen any other MMO company do this).

Adding all this together gives me a good picture on the release of ESO. tbh better expectations then i ever had on WoW lol.

AND imo ESO is its own game, some aspects from other games, but remember, its not a PvP game only, it has heavy emphasis to PvE and even heavier emphasis on Crafting and Exploring the high tier zones (adventure zones).

AND we get DLC level patched for free in frequent intervals.

in my book that all is +100 and a parrot sticker.
