EA, Facebook in running for "Worst Company in America&#3

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 11:34 am

I don't know if they are based in America, or anywhere outside of the UK but QA has to be one of the worst companies in my book.

EA goes up against AT&T in the next round. AT&T's long been a consumer "favourite". I don't know if EA can do it.

I think the biggest gripe with Facebook is their rather cavalier attitude to privacy, and their "oops, we won't do it again (until next time)" response every time they get caught.
Indeed.

I'd vote for EA since they are a publisher, and publishers (in any media) are a cancerous blight on the world economy.

In my opinion, Facebook charges far too much for its services. No joke, I'm serious; using Facebook costs too much. The price is somewhat obfuscated, but it is definitely there.

You don't pay money, no, but you do pay with information. Information about yourself, the people you know... every datum you put on Facebook is theirs for the taking (as far as law allows/lawyers can weasel). They use it for targeted advertising, they sell it to the highest bidder (and the next highest...), they just generally do their very best to squeeze every last cent out of it.

As a rational consumer, I am impervious to ads. The more obnoxious the add, the higher place that company gets on my [censored] list. When I want something, say a new amplifier, I'll do lots of research on the specs, listen to sound samples, try different products out first hand, see user reviews for reliability issues, and then decide whether I should buy it.

I don't understand why people go for advertised stuff without properly researching what they're buying.

I do this, too. The problem is that Facebook doesn't just mine your data with a view to manipulating you -- it also mines it with a view to manipulating your friends and family, your city, your region, and your country. The larger-scale stuff? Okay, I can maybe get behind that. How else does a company know how to localise its offerings and make itself relevant but through research about a city/region/country?

Using my private, personal information to manipulate my friends and family, though? That's not okay.

I actively block ads. Adbloc and noscript for my Firefox, mute button for my TV. I haven't seen an ad in years :hehe:

When i need to buy something expensive, i do my research.

Funny but true story, i started muting my TV during commercials after watching Fight Club years ago :hehe:

Google shouldn't be up there, i think its the best company in the world as all of their services are free(atleast i think). AT&T and bank of America definitely the worst.

Definitely voting for EA, but if it was EA vs Verizon it would be an absolute tough call. To me without a doubt Verizon is a [censored] company that scams you and teaches its employees to scam you. Had nothing but trouble with them and it sounds like EA is pooling resources from the same area as Verizon.

Activision should've been on the list but they aren't even in the same league as EA. At least Activision is going to tell you that we are taking your money, EA just undercuts you at all times.

Google is just as bad as Facebook when it comes to Privacy issues. Google though has kept a low profile in comparasion to the other companies and they are held up high within the right ciricles, probably the main reason why they aren't on this list.

EA worst company in America? I don't think so, after all the worst they could do would be to ruin the video gaming industry. Companies like Monsanto on the other hand... :/

EA is pretty bad in terms of video games, but if we go larger scale Monsanto is pretty bad. Seen a documentary on it once, not a pretty thing.

Yeah I'd have to agree that Monsanto is bad. Low Profile is probably what kept them off the list.

I agree that a lot of these companies get hate just because it's fun to do so. Walmart's bad but they hardly are the worst company, same goes for AT&T which I've had no problems with during the 7 years I've been with them. EA deserves to win this event so that maybe this would be a sign for them to change their practices.

How do you think they got so big?

Although to be fair, not all of them are bad. Only most of them.

There does also seem to be the other extreme where it's assumed that successful companies can do no wrong, which I guess is why they so often get away with it.

I'd say Google is slightly less bad, actually. They do gather [censored]loads of information about you, but at least they keep it to themselves (usually).

I still don't understand what's wrong with EA. Does it have to do with online pass? Because both the next Xbox and Playstation will supposedly NOT play used games, so you can't say EA is bad for making you buy a game new (or pay $10) to play online. Is it DRM? I only play their Xbox games and I'm not a pirate so again no issue there. Is it the quality of their games? I doubt it, they make top quality stuff year after year or it wouldn't sell as well as it does.

Either going to be Walmart, EA or Facebook.
well if it is those three it'll be a tough call

Walmart:
treats its employees like crap, outsources and thus cheapens our goods and brings in broken crap from China that's made by people who are also treated like crap in China.
EA:
similar to Walmart in that they treat their employees like dirt. They've taken some of the greatest gaming franchises and reduced them to nothing and/or exploited their developers. They're shifty and they give the gaming industry a bad name while helping to send the industry down the road of Hollywood in making games more commercialized and cookie-cutter.
Facebook:
Invasive of its user's privacy, promotes ill-behavior through the protection of anonimity, consistently goes against customer-base's wishes of not changing its UI and policies. More importantly though it's radically redefining the definition of socializing, in my opinion for the worse. People's ideas of friendship are becoming hollow through Facebook. People's respect of each other's privacy is going out the wayside as they justify through "Facebook friendships" the dismantling of other real friendships. My experiences with Facebook have not been pleasent, it's slowly starting to gain a little of my respect, but by and large I am very suspect of Facebook and the culture that it breeds.

so it comes down to a split between moral treatment compared to the preseveration of certain social-graces and manners.

hmmmmmmmmmm
