EA, Facebook in running for "Worst Company in America&#3

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:28 pm

Depending on how much word got out about EA, I can see them beating AT&T. I have much doubt about EA beating BoA (and I don't think they should, either; but it would be nice to see EA heralded as the second-worst company in America).

By the way, I think I missed the Bank of America v Walmart match by one day. Sorry. I could have sworn there weren't any updates on the polling until today. Not that it matters. BoA will have won that round.

You still get to vote in EA v AT&T today! As soon as I see a link for it...
Not enough people have personal experience with EA, word of mouth only goes so far. Most everyone, on the other hand, has experience with Facebook and most don't like it (and use it anyway)

American Telephone and Telegraph. At one time had a monopoly on US telecommunications until the government broke them up. It was bad and went downhill from there.

CSB:
I remember when I was real little and first came here when my dad had to get a phone from them. You couldn't go to a store and buy them. You had to go through AT&T. Cost him 60 dollars, it was a rotary phone and he had a meltdown over it. Literally threatened people at the place he had to pick it up at. Once the monopoly broke up you get a touch tone phone at a store for like 10 bucks.

Enough of old fogey time. This thread just reminded me of that unpleasant experience. EA wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the outsourced customer service and crippling drm. Doubt they will win worst company in the US. BoA screws people out of homes. You can't compare a broken game to that.

Also owners of Bell Labs, creators of Unix, so they did do something worthwhile (albeit enduringly controversial.) That said, they did manage to undermine the good work done by their technical staff by making a complete and utter Snickers of the licensing agreements, which turned into a bit of a case of "how to take something popular and make it into something much less popular."

It's already been discussed. Read the rest of the thread. :P Short answer: EA's been much worse than Activision lately.

In 5 hours, voting will open for the first match, Bank of America v Walmart. I'll post the link then.

The EA v AT&T match starts tomorrow. I know who I'm voting for. Do you?

I don't get the disdain for BoA. They've been nothing but helpful to me all this time :ermm:. And I like Walmart. I'm rooting for EA!

Most people don't know or care what goes on behinds the scenes in the big companies, or about the stuff that gets overlooked. Those who do tend to be vocal about it.

Well I knew that . Just a quick trip to the Skyrim General proves that point. I guess my personal experience has been positive with BoA.

Yeah I don't see anything terribly incriminating there, especially in light of the crap that's filtered out of the US banking system in the past two years. BoA has a pretty good on the street reputation in our area. They did threaten to crater that this year when they were going to charge an ATM usage fee, but they backed off that terrible idea.

They all deserve it, though I do think think that BoA and Walmart deserve it far more then EA does(not saying that they aren't terrible).

I still don't understand why Goldman Sachs and Kaiser Permanente aren't on this list.

Kaiser Permanente is only a regional company, and while they have had some scandals, they are also 100% better than your average slimeball insurance company.

Exactly how terrible are American banks that this is "okay"?

I don't have any experience with American HMO's, but as far as I can tell they all deserve this award. There is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiser_Permanente#Concerns_and_violations scandal.

The Consumerist and wiki links. Did you read them? Is BoA really the highest calibre bank there is in America? That's...

Actually, Unix was created in spite of them. The folks there started on it as an official project, blah blah, project canned, developers continue in secret, developers sneak it in under the umbrella of another task they were given. As you can tell, my recall of the details is kinda fuzzy :hehe:.

I do vaguely recall that they wanted either a PDP-10 or an IBM System/370(?) to develop it on but they'd only run to the much less powerful PDP-11 (though this is probably a key part of its success); I knew it had a whiff of unofficialdom about it although I'm not sure I knew about all that other stuff, but I guess it's not unknown for these corporate menaces to try to kill something at birth, and if that doesn't succeed, to try to licence it to death!

I did read them, as I said I didn't find anything there particularly incriminating. More like business as usual. But I guess people have picked a big bank on which to lump all the hate for all of them.

Who to vote for now? Chances are, receiving this prize will do nothing to change BoA's practices, and it's not like people don't already know that BoA svcks.

What about EA? Although it's the lesser evil, receiving this award may just hurt it a little bit.

OTOH, BoA legitimately deserves this prize more. OTO, it might do more good if it went to EA.

I am conflicted as to which one to vote for.

Edit: I've now voted. For BoA. EA got far enough. And people wouldn't take the poll seriously if EA won.

P.S. There's also a http://consumerist.com/2012/04/worst-company-in-america-consolation-round-att-vs-walmart.html for Walmart and AT&T. :P

Wow EA actually won and is in the finals, can't believe that. I'd vote EA over BOA, BOA is just a huge scapegoat right now although they too deserve to win but what EA is doing is horrible. Anti consumer policies is saying it nicely about EA, not to mention they milk developers until they go away completely like Westwood or soon to be Bioware if the latter doesn't get there act together. Easily the worst publisher in the industry, they make Ubisoft look like a Saint in comparasion and Ubi's pretty bad as well with there always online DRM and milking of the Assassin creed franchise.
