Alright, the projection system says the playoff teams are...

Horkers
NinjaFish
Chowdah
Drinkers

Last year, the projection system got 2/4 of the playoff teams correct. It also pinned the eventual league champion to finish dead last though, so it is best to take its predictions with skepticism.

I get the feeling the names Ram was a bad choice. Seems like a omen. (You know with the Rams svcking last year?)

Ratwar, if I recall, you falsely predicted me for the playoffs last year. But I do appreciate that fact that you think that I draft well. :)

Here's to a repeat this year! (of me being last place) I'm very tempted to pick up Woody Williams off waivers, if only because it made me chuckle seeing him listed.

I'm my league's manager this year, and our online draft is tonight. My plan is to draft players in this order: 2B, SS, 1B, 3B, C, OF, 1B/3B (corner infielder), SS/2B (middle infielder) OF, SP, OF, SP, RP, SP, OF, SP, RP, RP, SP, RP. I'm planning on drawing up a sheet with player priority at each position.

How can you plan like that? What if you get the first pick, do you take cano? Would you take kinsler in the first round if cano was gone ?

Have you drafted this way before? Was it successful
? This just seems like bad strategy.

I think a rough plan of what you're looking for in your team is a good idea, but be ready that very specific plan of yours to fall apart quickly. Still, having a good idea about which direction you want to go with your team is never a bad thing.

I am, however, a big fan of Xrayman's opinion on pitching.

Yea, I think I might like pitching too much. I really like my top 3 this season though, Halladay, Haren and Jhymanz. Maybe Darvish will turn out well too, who knows. I also think Walden will come into his own, first because the Angels are just a better team this year, and also because he's had another year to develop.

My keeper league draft is tomorrow. I ended up keeping Votto, Kinsler and McCutchen; McCutchen may have been a bit of a reach but my man-crush on him rivals that of the one I had on Rickie Weeks when I first started playing fantasy baseball 7 years ago.

Over all 56 players were kept, in a 16 team league. 4 teams kept no one; 1 team (me) kept 3; 2 teams kept 4; 9 teams kept 5. 2 teams kept more pitchers than hitters, both were 2-3.

The first 5 rounds are for keepers, if you don't have enough keepers you get to pick from the non-keeper pool. I won the league last year, so I get pick 16, and the first 5 rounds don't snake so there will be 16 non-keepers (along with the 56 keepers) off the board before I get a pick (4 teams with 0 keepers for 4 rounds), then another 6 before I get my 5th round pick. The rest of the draft does snake but the board is going to be pretty bare by the time I get to pick 16 in the 6th round. Unfortunately I can't find an easy way to rank the non-kept players to see what I may be looking at when I get my first picks. I may be regretting not keeping Justin Upton now, but we will see what happens tomorrow.

15 starting pitchers were kept including:

Spoiler
H Kuroda
U Jiminez
J Zimmerman
M Cain
Y Darvish (not sure about "keeping" a first year player, but apparently the rules allow it)

4 relief pitchers

Spoiler
M Rivera
J Papelbon
C Kimbrel
R Madsen (by the same team that kept Kimbrel)

Some questionable (IMO) position players kept:

Spoiler
A Avila
B Lawrie
M Morse
F Freeman
Melky Cabrera
C McGhee

I do like my chances considering some of the questionable keeper picks, but it is still disappointing to see all of those names gone when you get yoru first pick. There is one team that is looking ridiculously stacked at keepers, he has Mig Cabrera, C Utley, J Reyes, J Bautista and J Upton.

Those closers have been dropping like flies, and we haven't even gotten to the regular season yet. First Soria and now Madson.

Chipper is having knee surgery, could be out til a week or two after opening day they say. He's supposed to retire after this season, which is like a legend retiring in my diehard-braves-fan-eyes. Sure will miss my favorite player.

I might still have a shot in my bracket if Baylor beats Kentucky and UNC wins the title.

______________________

I just finished my keeper league draft. With all of the keepers and me picking 16th out of 16 it went about as I expected; I did OK but made a lot of reaches.

The most exciting part was when another owner and I got into an argument about the validity of not keeping the maximum number of players. He thought everyone should have to keep the max no matter what and to do otherwise was BS and a cop out. I explained that not everyone had 5 guys that were keeper-worthy and it was allowed by the rules so deal with it. He told me to draft better and I ended the conversation by reminding him that I won the league last year and didn't really need his advice on drafting.

Draft overview here if is anyone is interested.

My first pick in the keeper rounds was Starlin Castro. This was the 64th pick overall, but 16th of non-keepers. At the end of the 5th round I got Aramis Ramirez. That set my infield completely: Votto, Kinsler, Castro and Aramis.

From here it went to a normal snake draft.

Rest of my draft

Spoiler
6-16(96) BJ Upton - he was one of the guys I considered keeping so I "won" this one, got him a whole round later than had I kept him
7-1(97) M Weiters - He was borderline here but if I didn't take him here I would have ignored the position and dealt with scraps later.
8-16(128) C Luebke - another reach but I like him and his home ballpark
9-1(129) A Lind - I really needed power and he was the best option
10-16(160) - B Morrow - too early? I think he is going to have a nice season and will always get a ton of Ks
11-1(161) R Howard - I had to take the chance here
12-16(192) C Rasmus - another guy that I might have taken a bit too early but I needed an OF and I think he will bounce back too
13-1(193) B League - The closer marker was already barren by this point, I think I am going to be in trouble on saves this year. Will need to be very vigilant on the WW
14-16(224) D Holland - I desperatly need pitchers at this point and Holland is very talented and gets a lot of Ks. Should get me 10+ wins too.
15-1(225) S Marshall - Lucked out he stuck around so long.
16-16(256) S Romo (RP, SF) - We start 3 RPs, no closers left and K/BB is a cat in our league and he dominates that. Wilson could get hurt again too, right?
17-1(257) J Neise - My favorite flavor, NL pitcher that gets K's
18-16(288) B Revere - needed a fourth OF and some more speed.
19-1(289) J McDonald - see J Neise
20-16(320) C Pavano - not my kind of guy at all, AL and doesn't strike anyone out but he was the best available pitcher
21-1(321) JA Happ - NL, K's I think he could bounce back.
22-16(352) C Janssen - K's, good K/BB ratio and fluid-ish closer job in Toronto

My line-up

Spoiler
C Wieters
1B Votto
2B Kinsler
SS Castro
3B Ramirez
OF McCutchen
OF BJ Upton
OF C Rasmus
UTIL A Lind

P C Janssen
P J Neise
SP C Luebke
SP B Morrow
SP D Holland
RP B League
RP S Marshall
RP S Romo

Bench: Howard, Revere, Pavano, Happ

I like my offense, especially if Howard comes back and does what he should, I have a nice mix.

My normal pitching strategy for H2H leagues got blown up by not getting enough legitimate closers so I am going to have to rely on luck and the WW to compete in the pitching cats on a weekly basis. Hopefully Lind produces while Howard is out so I can trade him for pitching when the big fella returns.

EDIT: I have 4 Blue Jays on my roster, I can't imagine that will end well.
