For PC users: What rig do you got?

Post » Sat Jun 12, 2010 9:06 pm

My drive is already 7200RPM, I take care of my disk and defrag/clean it very often and have no issues with it. I have looked at other hard drives on the market and I do not see 10,000RPM as a viable increase if I were to go that route. The only real way for me to get a good data disk upgrade is if I go the SSD route.

I know its a 7200RPM, so are mine, but thats not what i ment.
Its just a Slow Harddrive with Seaking and Data transfer, infact its one of the slowest 7200RPM SATA HDD i know.

The rest of your system is really fast but the HDD is holding it back a little, thats why i sugest to fit a Samsung F1 or F3, its just a waste having such a slow HDD in there.

Here is a big Test of a number of HDD, the ones marked in Red are 2.5" HDD, Yours (Hitachi P7K500 500GB) is easy to find, in every test it ends somewhere near the bottom.

Its a Dutch site, but you just need to look at the Graphs: http://nl.hardware.info/reviews/1685/vergelijkingstest-58-harde-schijven
Just klick "Volgende Pagina" to go trough the Test Results.

And before you buy a SSD, think again...
A: Verry little space for your money
B: Cheaper ones drop like flies if you run games from them
C: They get slower and slower overtime

I rather stick with a "normal" fast 1TB 7200RPM HDD than, or get a WD Velociraptor 600GB 10000RPM HDD since that has enough space to put Windows 7 on and all of my games, music and movies i would just keep on a "normal" drive or on my Network Server.

Hello,

since X-Mas I have got a new GPU and I am kind of surprised.
My last GPU was a Sapphire HD4870 with 1GB GDDR5 and I played Crysis/Crysis Warhead on Very High on a 1920x1080 screen without AA. But now with the GTX570 I can even use Supersampling and the game is still very smooth with about 40FPS.
The only problem is my slow CPU (a Q6600 @ 2,4GHz).
On normal servers I can play very very smooth but on modded servers with 40 players or more the game starts to lag.
For Crysis 2 I will buy a Intel Core i7 2600K :P and I hope that is going to solve the problem.

my system in detail:

Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2,4 GHz (not overclocked)
Point of View GTX570 with 1,280 Gig GDDR5
4 Gig DDR2 Ram
MSI P35 Mainboard
500Gig WD Eco harddrive
1TB WD harddrive
Antec twelve hundred case
Logitech G19 keyboard
Logitech G35 headset
Logitech Performance MX mouse
and finally a LG flatscreen with 112cm

btw: I preordered Crysis 2 ;)

Booting and logging into windows 7 in ~ 10 seconds is good enough for me, and so is taking about a second to startup a game. Like I said before, I see no reason to upgrade until a SSD becomes a viable price/performace/space option for me. :) HDD's do not really affect gaming performance at all, just how long it takes to open and manage program folders. ;)

Core i7 950 3.06Ghz
2 5850's CrossfireX
6GB DDR3 1600 Triple Channel RAM
ASuS Sabertooth x58 mobo

And my monitor is only 1680×1050, but I plan to completely max Crysis 2. And if I can't, I'll eat a cat.
That rig will destroy Crysis 2 with that resolution.

The heat production from those two gpu's might grate some noise though. But the rest is assured, it will totally rip Crysis 2 in any a case.

Thats not true at all mate, they do affect gaming performance a lot especaily wen there are large open enviroments like Crysis or GTA or Crysis.

Everything you needs to be loaded from the Harddrive to the Memory, CPU, GPU, Audio Hardware etc. so your Harddrive will be bussy constandly as it needs to read(open) the Game data and Transfer it to the Various components like the RAM, Videocard, Procesor, Soundcard etc.

A slow HDD can limit your FPS as the other components dont get the data as fast/slower as they can compute it, And if the HDD has to seak a bit to long you get stutters also simply because the data was not available in time for the CPU or Videocard.

It was just a word of Advice, I think you can easly increase your gaming performance by 10~20% atleast with your system with something like a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB.

But Advice is Advice so you dont have to take it ;)

Whats wrong with the Card?

And like Urbanshaft said:
Why you got 2 DDR3 Modules in a Thriple Channel Motherboard/System? Its smart to pay attencion to Specs wen you buy something/put something together...
(hope you got Windows 64 Bit btw or everything over 4GB is a complete waste of money anyway)

I am hoping that an HD 5830 or a GTX 460 will be more than enough to run the game on high settings with 40fps on 1280x1024 resolution and 4x AA. And for the game to run at max settings and produce 40fps at that resolution, an HD 5870 or a GTX 480 should top that quite nicely.

As for CPUs, I hope the game will take advantage of quad core and hexa core CPUs. I know Crysis only took use of 2 cores, hopefully Crysis 2 can improve on that. So I'm guestimating that a Core i5 750 or a Phenom II X4 950 will provide plenty of power to feed the game's processing needs.

As for RAM, 4GB should be sufficient, depending on the speed. I'd say 1333MHz is a good start.

Yeah, thanks for the advice. My next upgrade is definitely going to be to a new HDD or an SSD if I get a job soon (only 15 years old right now ^-^), although right now I do not experience any stuttering issues like you said I might have. ;)

My Case has a HDD activity monitor LED on the front, but it barely flickers after my game starts (lots booting windows and apps), which made me assume that it would not affect performance. :)

You won't be able to buy a 5830 anymore. 6850's are basically the same thing though.

Unsure. The CryEngine 3 does Tessellation, but it really hasn't been announced. I think I read in an interview a couple months back that it will, but don't trust that.

Windows XP 32bit SP3
4GB RAM DDR2 (Because my windows is 32 bit, it uses only 3,2GB RAM)

ATI HD 4850 512Mb GDDR3
HDD 1Tera

I will be able to play Crysis 2 on high settings with 1280x1024?
