And the excuse that "they've never done multiplayer before" is the worst of all. They can learn. They can add people to the team with online experience. BGS is constantly growing. From Morrowind until Skyrim, the team has gotten bigger. There's no chance that they go into the next generation and not start to develop for multiplayer. Online gaming is huge this generation. It's only going to get bigger with the next iteration of consoles. BGS will expand.
If you read the article I presented, you will see that BethesdaGS is all too aware that many of their fans desire to see a multiplayer TES game and have for some time, but Hines states in the article that they won't do one because "...what we end up with is unpalatable. It'd make a lesser version of the game." They are not prepared to sacrifice the resources. And this article was written during the development of TESO so it should be quite clear BethesdaGS plans on letting Zenimax Online carry the burden of developing a TES game with multiplayer features. The studio makes all the difference: Zenimax Online will develop multiplayer; BethesdaGS won't.
