Game runs very choppy

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:47 pm

Alright so I figured it might have something to do with audio drivers since dialogue really messes up my framerate. I updated my audio drivers thinking it might help - I was wrong.

So that means that even the latest drivers for my audio / video cards don't help.

I'm running a MacBook Pro i7 @ 2.66, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 512MB... if that helps.

I can only add this, Obsidian at it again.

Was the same with Kotor 2, NWN 2 and Alpha Protocol.

Was hoping that this one was any different but apparently it isn't.

Known for bugs and unfinished games, nothing changes.

Glad I won the CE through Best Buy or I would have cancelled my pre-order anyway until things got fixed if they ever get fixed cause Alpha Protocol is still a mess to me.
Kotor 2 got fixed by the modding community let's hope they can do the same for F:NV.

A shame, a real shame, but not uninspected.

After i fixed the FPS issue by disabling water multisynching and updating my drivers, game seems fine so far

Just applied the fix in your link to FNV. To me, there was a noticeable difference in how smooth it got after applying it. So, thanks! :D

Running into similar problems as the rest of you. Whenever I get near a bunch of NPC's, my frame-rate drops to under 20 (running at 60+ the rest of the time). In particular, when I get in the casino in Primm that has 10 or so NPCs inside. Very laggy, but only when I'm "looking" at them. Never had this problem with Fallout 3.

Specs for what it's worth: GTX 260 w/ latest drivers (as of yesterday), AMD 550BE OC'd @ 3.5Ghz, 6GB DDR3

Not to be negative or anything here, but this is the exact reason, why I quit PC gaming. I just hated updating and the frustrationg of tweaking or doing this and doing that to play a game. I do not find having the ability to play mods worth this hassel.

I am glad to hear that there is a small fix for this that is good. Great forum here with great advice. Keep up the good work guys in helping each other out.

I just updated my drivers and I'm still having the same exact problem with dialogue - as soon as somebody starts talking, the game slows down unbearably. I'm running a GTX 460 myself.

Running Win 7 x64

Video Card: GTX260M, I am having the same problem. FPS drops to 15 or less when I engage dialog with someone. As well I notice the frame rate is all over the place however I can deal with FPS issues bouncing around but not going from 50 FPS to 15 every time I speak with a character in game. We will need a patch ASAP. I tried installing new drivers, installing older drivers. Re-imaged my machine with a recovery disk, reinstalling everything (including the video drivers) still the same problem in the game. I updated the video drivers once again, same problem.

Patch please Bethesda.

Controversially, that's one of the reasons I keep coming back to the PC. While PC games do have more bugs overall, it's much harder to get said bugs patched on a console. And if/when the Devs drop the ball, you can always look to the modding community for a fix (or do it yourself). You don't have that option with Consoles.

But I do see your point. Some days it's just not worth it. :D

Given that the framedrops appear to be happening nearer the NPC's, I would guess that its something to do with audio, as someone previously suggested rather than the graphics card or processor causing that issue.

I think someone mentioned setting their sound ouput to stereo in AC3filter fixed this, but cant remember where I read that.

Regarding NPC speech as the problem--think it's possible to disable in-game audio to test it's effect on frame-rate? Doesn't seem to be anything relevant in the ini files...

Oddly enough i havn't had any issues with NPCs' dialouge. My framerate gets choppy when i get into combat with humans (not creatures.) And i'm talking as choppy as some of you have been getting with the dialouge sequences.

The game auto-configured me to Ultra-High.

Ive noticed its when both human and non-human npc's get close and are making noise that it becomes laggy or when looking at areas with npc's

@ the folks who have the game (I'd try it out if I wasn't living in EU):

What sample quality is your audio setting at? I recall several games (last of them being arcania) where it was a key difference in performance whether your audio playback device sample quality was at 24bit, 48000Hz or something else.. (Audio, playback device properties, advanced tab).

Can any of you with the stutter issues try to change that setting & see if it helps things or not?

I messed around with it... nothing happened...

What if this all has to do with threaded AI?

Dunno, if anyone has tried yet, I'm still waiting to get my copy today at noon, but its possible that like in the Fallout 3 ini file, there is a command called UseThreadedAI. Default in fallout 3 was 0. Changing this to 1 allows for multi-core/thread usage of the AI for NPCs I believe. Is it possible this may be the issue yet again? I can verify this more after I get home and have a chance to look at the New Vegas INI file vs Fallout.

I reverted to the 197 drivers and the framerate drops stopped for zoomed in conversations. I still get terrible framerates from NPC's in general tho.

let me know how this goes... i know fallout 3 didnt have this problem... fallout 3 had a problem with the quadcore processors...

EDIT* I set that to 1 for the UseThreadedAI=1 and it didnt change the laggy NPC/FPS issue

Tired it already, it doesn't work, no apparent difference. Most likely we will have to wait for a patch.
