I just bought a laptop for school, and a good one at that considering its required for my major in computer animiation. its a 2,800 dollar laptop. hp elite book 8740w. i usually play games on my 360 but i thought id just go with my laptop on this one. and im about to give up all together and wasted 50 dollars and just go buy a 360 copy. it speced me for ultra settings and when i try to play i get maybe 20 frames and it drops durasticly lower after encountering npcs or objects, ok no big deal i just switch the qaulity to high and then medium and it still bloooooows. i didnt play fallout 3 on pc, but i checked the reccomended settings on can i run it .com and it was at the very end of the scale. ------------------||-----------------------------------------------||---------------||--------------

Try 260.63, it's under beta/archived drivers at nvidia's site. Helped out my performance for sure but I'm still getting random floating HDR lights

FIXED! switch HDR to Bloom.

turning off v-syn HDR and lowering the water effects seamed to help with some of the choppiness a bit but its still noticeable just not as much but with a hand full of human npcs on the screen game slows down a lot still

That's definitely a god laptop for computer animation (and a very expensive cpu hence the pricetag), but you'll have to lower the settings to play modern games including this one (despite being based on a two-year-old-game). A quick look on notebookcheck.com shows that quadro 2800m is based on the mobile 9800m gt. The benchmarks show that the 9800m series actually outperform it and for comparison sake, I used to have a gateway laptop with a 9800gts and I had to settle for a mix of high/ultra at 720p to maintain 60fps in most conditions for fallout 3

I have a SLI setup with two GTS250 xfxforce cards. Im going to try the updated nivida drivers.

I have my settings on ultra because the game suggested those setting same as with Fallout 3. While Fallout 3 had occasional FPS drops, it was not as much as Vegas. Things got really choppy during a fight with multiple NPCs and my character.
I do have the resolution at the 1920x1080, but resolution never seemed to be a problem with other games, namely fallout 3. I might try lower graphic settings next.

I know what part of the issue is. It is barely utilizing the GPU (Graphics Card). I am running a GTX 260, and monitoring my GPU Usage percentages while in game. It averages between 18%- 35% usage. Sometimes dipping even lower when NPC's come on screen. Something is severely messed up with the optimization of this. Its simply not using our hardware like it should.

I am just so irritated/dissapointed right now. In my mind the game is simply unplayable in this state, and I feel like I just got completely ripped off buying this game. Someone really missed the mark releasing the game this broken...

I've tried three sets of drivers:

-186.18 - my fallback driver, generally things -work- with this driver, but it doesn't always perform the best
-258.96 - the driver I had prior to New Vegas, which actually worked quite well with most games and has excellent performance
-260.89 - newest Nvidia driver

Not a single one brings any fix into play. The performance is slightly different from 186.18 to the two newer ones (better) but only slightly. The issue with human NPCs completely destroying my frames persists in each. When I converse with them, when they even come a centimeter into my field of vision, the game feels like I'm sliding on ice. I was enjoying the hell out of it, too, but it's becoming far too noticeable now that the initial cool factor is gone.

Forgot to add, which I do not think it makes much difference, that I am using:

Nvidia 250 GTS with stock clock speeds
Intel E6550 C2D @ 2.4GHz
6GB of RAM (not that this part matters, since the engine utilizes RAM for [censored], apparently)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Same issue, GTX470, all latest drivers, extremely laggy when I'm even near NPC's. Cannot play game as is.

I have a 9800m gs and it runs really well maxed out. (after i kill all the human npcs around me) This is indeed a game breaker. I was looking around other forums and it seems there might, and I stress a big "might" have a patch rleased later today, but I doubt it.

Windows 7 64 bit, Core i7-930, GTX 260, 4 gigs RAM. 260.89 nVidia driver. No reason this shouldn't run better than it does.

I get the choppy framerate when talking to NPCs and when not. I noticing mousing over objects and looking in certain directions causes massive FPS stuttering.

Patch please. Game is hardly playable in this state. Pretty grossly disappointing delivery. Last time I was this pissed about a launch title was Borderlands and Gearbox--Bethesda is so much better than this.

I see that I'm not the only one with problems. Luckly, there is still some things I haven't finished with Fallout 3 GOTY edition, so I might just finish that game up while I wait for a patch. Hopefully the patch will
come soon though as Vegas has an awesome story line so far.

from what i've been hearing it seems like Nvidia GPUs are having a tough time with FNV. i think it is mostly a driver issue. i have read some posts (heh, it may have been this one) about performance issues with water detail. you could try setting the water details/reflections to a lower level and see if that fixes the issue.

I have the choppy issue to (As I did with Oblivion and Fallout 3.) with crossfired 5870s. It's using 30%..........of 1 card. :facepalm:

This is just normal Gamebryo engine issues. I'm glad to see the load is getting spread out among all 4 cores but it's rather annoying to see 30% usage of a GPU, ever. What a waste of good hardware.

It's time to retire this engine and come up with something that can make better use of current tech. If it used it all properly, there is no reason I couldn't run this game on Ultra @ 1920x1200 and maintain 60+ FPS. As is, I'm at 1680x1050 on High and still having trouble keeping it in the 40+ range.

Here's hoping the next TES game is on a new, better engine. (Though I am not holding my breath.)

As I see it, there are two rather severe issues that seem to be resulting in massive performance loss compared to F3. They are:

1) Human Actors (NPCs) cause a completely unreasonable drop in framerate whenever they are in scene.
-Is it possible they're not LODing? I noticed that human models appear to be rendering at full detail even when barely visible in the distance. Can't verify this, just a theory.

2) Objects in the background load and unload as you turn your camera (instead of only as you move about) causing severe stuttering.

I can't help with #1, I have no idea what's causing this and none of the proposed solutions on these forums have actually helped (some of them provide general FPS boosts, which helps to some minor degree, but does not change the fact that human Actors cause excessive lag -- something they never did in F3).

#2, however, I seem to have alleviated using an old .ini tweak from Fallout3. (See: http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_10.html for the original document this comes from).

I modified 3 variables which control cell precache data limits. Cells which are precached are held in RAM so they don't need to be loaded from the disk. The default settings are fairly conservative for modern hardware (25mb) and this apparently results in cells being loaded/unloaded when you turn the camera, even when not actually moving. F:NV really doesn't like you messing with Fallout.ini (it resets it everytime you start the game) however I found that setting these in FalloutPrefs.ini did the trick. Both of these files can be found in "My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\".

While this hasn't changed my actual framerate in any circumstances, it has completely removed the "turn stuttering" which was making the game extremely uncomfortable to play. The values above were taken from the tweakguides.com page linked above as the suggested settings for 2GB RAM (I have 4, but figured it wasn't likely to improve anything to increase it again). You might want to look at that page and determine for yourself which values make the most sense for your system (Memory, Loading & Multi-threading section).

Hopefully this helps someone out there. I know a lot of these "fixes" end up being of the "worked for me, but might not for you" variety, so I hope some others who have the turn-stuttering will try it out and post their results. Now if someone can figure out what's up with the NPCs...

When I change anything in the Fallout.ini, it automatically reverts when I play the game.

Also having the same issue. Fallout 3 runs perfectly, but this runs terrible with NPCs around, especially in the town.

Yeah, that's why I suggested changing it in FalloutPrefs.ini instead. I wasn't expecting it to work there, but it seems to have. The game won't change anything that's been set in here unless you actually change an option which relates to one of these variables. Also, while this is highly annoying, you can edit Fallout.ini once the loader is running, before you hit the PLAY button. Fallout.ini gets reverted when the loader starts, but won't be altered when you actually load the game.

Tried changing screen resolutions

Nothing works.

Nothing to add just wanted to report the same issue. Nvidia user, NPCs decimate my framerate, etc

So while the water fix I mentioned earlier worked for a good while, once I had to go up against 5-6 humanoid NPCs at once, things slowed back to an absolute crawl (eventually crashing). Switching graphics to "low" barely helped at all. I'm beginning to suspect this is some sort of AI limiting issue, seeing as it only happens with humanoid NPCs.
