Has Bethesda lost touch, or have I?

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 1:28 pm

At first I thought this whole hearthfire dlc thing was a joke. "build a house, sweep the house, adopt kids, cook". Like come on! It seemed like a joke, but then I realized there would be people would would use the plugin. So i guees thats cool for them. Then I heard it cost money and that blew my mind. I couldnt believe Bethesda was gonna micro transaction TES fans again on crappy crap. There is no way that this should cost money, a script that places vanilla assets for 5$ ? What?

It's 5$. I pay more for food.

I mentioned the free content because this is just a bit above what we got for free, thus the low price.

And again, if they could've used that effort for the actual big DLC, they could've used the effort from the Mounted Combat as well...
... or to make a cure for cancer, but Skyrim is more important.

This. They pretty much already made it at the game jam, and are now offering it for $5 to those who want it. It's not like the effort that was put into this DLC could have been used to make the next big DLC better, if at all.

Seriously, when someone at a restaurant offers you a cookie, do you start whining that you don't like that particular flavour of cookie, or that you'd rather have a different cookie, or do you simply say, "no thanks" and move on with your life?

Mind you, I'm not even going to buy this DLC because it doesn't really appeal to me (I'll stick with the ranger ridge mod).

Nope its just you, like the other thread you made a few days ago...

Oh, you mean the thread in which I said Hearthfire was exactly this, and everyone called em crazy and wrong? Well, here it is.

in hopes that the next dlc doesnt base itself of the undead, maybe the expansion (as i am sure they will have one) will let you go to the remains of Morrowind, or let you go to a Daedric Realm.

THAT is something I would want! Something new and interesting.

What if the cook said on a TV commercial that every meal served was a feast and was to be a real luxury meal for the enjoyment of the customers, and when you got there, they only had mini-macaroni?
Or, the cook said that the main course was heavenly and huge, and that the seconds would spice it up with new and exciting tastes, but you discovered the seconds were french fries like they've got at MacDonalds?

You'd be irritated.

No one said it was going to be a huge expansion. It's just a feature that a part of the community wanted, so they implemeneted it, for 400 MS points. And you are calling it a rip-off and saying " OMG Beth svcks I'm never touching Skyrim again ". Plus (IDK if this is true), people are saying that this is just a strategical move, so that the Xbox's one month of exclusivity would end, as they have a contract for 2 expansions.

It's $5. A small meal cost more than this.

The first course, being vanilla Skyrim, was amazing in many different aspects and has provided countless hours of entertainment. I also love the second course (Dawnguard), which I felt is a sign that Bethesda is learning from the sub-par main quest and dull characters (Serena > Lydia). Now, I'm sure the third course is on its way, they're just offering appetizers to tie us over.

Not seeing the forest from the trees?

Yes, it has to be you.

I agree with bolded part. I very much enjoy Skyrim and am happy to be getting what we are getting, couldn't honestly care about the usual asked for stuff like spears myself. Though werebears would be nice.

Are they though? I always assumed this too, but I honestly don't know anymore. There was a recent interview with Todd Howard I am trying to find in which he states something to the effect that people do not want a bunch of new dungeons to go through, that is not the way to support Skyrim. So is this what they think people want? Are we actually going to get a big expansion or two?

You want a real quote? How about when Todd Howard stated that Skyrim DLC was going to be "meaty" and that the DLCs for Skyrim would have substance to them. Dawnguard barely cleared that bar in my personal opinion and Hearthfire doesn't even hold a candle to Dawnguard.

To be fair, it is cheaper and it obviously appears to be an outgrowth of stuff from GameJam, which is fine. However, this isn't something that should be prioritized when it comes to dlc. I hope they are working on something bigger and better for future dlc, and I understand if they are trying to put stuff together to keep people interested in the game while they do, but you have to understand no one is going to look on this and be content with how basic this dlc is. Chalk this up to the crafting craze in these games I guess. I mean hell I'm already an alchemist, a blacksmith, and an enchanter now I have to be a carpenter too? What really blows is this dlc is so basic, I mean we can already buy houses in the game, so they are trying to add incentives to being able to build your own house, like all these little add ons and other stuff. I think they are seriously overlooking the biggest boon to buying a house in this game, and that is having a storage location that is also close to SHOPS. If my house is out in the middle of nowhere, I can't exactly sell things.

I don't know... I really want them to show support for improving upon what Dawnguard has broken as well as fixing some annoying bugs now present in the vanilla version of the game. This isn't getting me excited to play Hearthfire or Skyrim for that matter.

I don't like Skyrim for the most part, but this dlc is a good thing since it adds more rpg to the mix. What I'm upset about all this is the fact they didn't implement this feature from the beginning. Considering the fact that many felt that Skyrim was unfinished/rushed, perhaps because they wanted to release it in 11/11/11.

I wonder if there's going to be a new trend for game companies to charge for new features that normally and traditionally was done for the vanilla game. What? are they going to charge for addons that adds attributes to your character? Charge to have a magical chest to store tons of equipment which otherwise wouldn't have been possible? I can smell Microsoft business practices bleaching Beth imagination.

The people saying "I never asked for build a home DLC" guess what, someone or many someone's did. If there was no demand, they wouldn't make it.

Yeah Bethesda has lost their touch, just look at Skyrim. IMO the magic touch from Oblivion, Fo3 and FNV (Obsidian) wasn't passed onto Skyrim. IDK I just feel Skyrim is missing something and Hearthfire doesn't make up for it.

Listen to the words from Gstaff.

"This is something we thought you guys would enjoy. Admittedly, it’s a smaller add-on (made by a smaller team). We’re still keen on doing “big and meaty” content, too :)"

Really,we shouldnt expect a expansion like that so early, calm down :) As much as i want things like you mentioned OP. I Think i will like this small add-on. Think of it something we get meanwhile we wait for the big thing.

Then look harder!! Right after the Game jam video there where a ton of threads asking to be able to build your own home.

For the record when Skyrim came out I also recall a lot of threads asking why it wasn't in the game.

Basically. I do feel somewhat sad that everyone's hopes for the psijic order and a magic overhaul were crushed though.
