Has Bethesda lost touch, or have I?

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 7:07 am

This is not a flame or troll thread. I have a legitimate question and complaint here, and I think it deserves to be debated.

I am asking honestly, has Bethesda lost touch with what people want, or have I? I honestly believe that adding a large, new area to explore, filled with new enemies, dungeons, questlines, etc. would be what everyone would want from a DLC - Shivering Isles style. What have we gotten? Dawnguard, a puny little distraction, and now Hearthfire? Hey look, I can build a house and then fight off Skeevers and umm, stare at my walls and stuff. Wow. If I wanted to play Minecraft or the Sims I would. I always stated that I would immediately buy any DLC Bethesda put out. Not only am I retracting that statement, I am putting Skyrim down for a long time.

So am I wrong?

I'm pretty disappointed too. The house building shouldn't be a primary focus for a DLC but something in addition to some major content.

They're going to make expansions, this is just a little something the community wanted, and it's to pass the time until the big DLCs come out.

Mmmhhhmmm. First off the majority of gamers would like a game that involves the words "Warfare" or "Duty" in it somewhere and had machine guns so TES doesn't cater anyway(). Okay, to be serious Dawnguard was awesome, they sacrificed a larger area for a better story, I don't even know what Hearthfire is.

EDIT: Just checked out Heathfire, and this is... ridiculous. Definitely not getting this. And an adoption system? :nope:

Are they though? I always assumed this too, but I honestly don't know anymore. There was a recent interview with Todd Howard I am trying to find in which he states something to the effect that people do not want a bunch of new dungeons to go through, that is not the way to support Skyrim. So is this what they think people want? Are we actually going to get a big expansion or two?

I think Hearthfire is just some side ideas that they wanted to get into the game but didn't want to incorporate into a larger DLC like Dawnguard. $5 for Hearthfire ... easiest decision I've had in some time.

@Skooma Addict, I think they've lost touch with TES. If they let Obsidian keep doing Fallout, they may keep that one good though.

@MrBigglesworth, I'm inclined to agree.

@yougivingmelipboy?, You don't have to sacrifice a large area for plot. You can have both, you just have to want to have both.

This is what we have asked for, build our own house. Now that Beth has done EXACTLY WHAT WE ASKED FOR, they have lost touch. Now seriously, what the heck is wrong with you people?

I'm inclined to blindly defending Skyrim, as to be honest it's one of the best games ever made IMO. HOWEVER first off I (and plenty of others) never asked for a build-able house, I'd rather have more adventures and second of all, the majority of those who did were probably expecting it in a patch (as such a stupid and miniscule feature SHOULD be in a patch, not a DLC of it's own).

First, it's intresting concept, adds mod tools so; Yay for that, I guess. Secondly I am pretty disapointed. I want that full expansion though don't mind waiting till next year. I can't help but feel a lot of these game jam ideas are being released just to make a lot of money.

There were DLCs in Oblivion to buy Fighter's Guild Castle and the Thieves' Den. This time, we can actually SHAPE our own house however we please.

It's you.

People wanted to build their own houses(We got five millions threads of people asking for it) so bethesda giving them just that. Funny someone leaked this info a while back. Looks like I'm going to start taking leaks a little more seriously.

Where and when were people asking for a DLC to build our own house? I visit these forums a lot and I certainly have not seen threads asking for house building.

They also made new free content like Mounted Combat and extra killcams, instead of incorporating it into a bigger DLC!

The fiends!

I for one am excited for this Hearthfire, and will probably get it, as housing for Skyrim for me has been terrible. I actually wanted to be able to live out in the wilderness, not sure if this will be its own cell or exterior, because it would be even more cooler if it was a exterior home. I did not ask for home-building, as I would like to have more "CONTENT". Which includes more quests, and more things to do. I was hoping that this dlc wouldnt have focused on just house-building, but now that Bethesda has announced it, those rumors about undead are no more. I personally want a expansion more than anything for Skyrim. A land you can go to, complete with its own story, quests, people, and breath-taking experiences. Something like Shivering Isles, guess they just released Hearthfire to give what the people wanted and to close that deal with Microsoft. If they are making a expansion, surely they want to release it with everyone at once.

I don't see how adding free stuff justifies expecting people to buy a DLC. That's like I own a store and you walk in and I say "Here, have this chocolate bar for free, now buy this refrigerator."

The little stuff inbetween the big meaty expansions were the free patches:
For Fallout 3 we did five DLCs. That was a very aggressive path for us. Our plan now is to take more time, to have more meat on them [for Skyrim]. They’ll feel closer to an expansion pack. With Fallout 3, it was, ‘Ten dollars is the sweet spot for us and we know we want to put out five of them. And we had overlapping teams. We were coming off Fallout 3 and right back in.
We just think we can do better content if we approach it a different way.
To hold Skyrim loyalists over between each major content release, Howard said that the team will be releasing smaller free add-ons to bridge the gap and keep gamers immersed in the Elder Scrolls universe.
Because that gap is going to be bigger, we want to put little things out for free in between. We’ve already done that for PC with the high-res pack. We’re trying to figure out what those things are.
Who said anything about buying this?

The problem everybody especially the OP tend to have is that this DLC EXIST AT ALL.

Because they are making this instead of Return to Morrowind: Vivec's revenge or something...

Considering that Skyrim is their best-selling game ever? ... No, Bethesda have not lost touch
with their fanbase.

Dawnguard and Hearthfire are smaller DLC's, yes, but they expand greatly upon the RPG
elements of the game. I too hope for a Shivering Isles-sized expansion, and I am sure it will
come soon enough.

Remember Knights of Nine? About the same size as Dawnguard - though Dawnguard may be
bigger. There will be another DLC at the size of Shivering Isles, mark my words.
