How did Skyrim avoid an 18 rating?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:16 am

Nothing to do with the mods at all. It was rated M because of the violence, in particular the finishing moves. If the game had you hacking without finishing moves or blood, it would be rated T. There isn't nearly enough sixual themes to be rated M.
Oblivion, not Skyrim.

In my Opinion, it's barely a Mature title.
If I had a 13-year-old, I'd let him/her play it.

Oblivion, not Skyrim.
I think Skyrim was rated M for the violence, whereas Oblivion was re-rated M for those mutilated corpses. I'm glad Skyrim ditched those.

When I first got Oblivion for xbox 360 before we even knew Bethesda was making Shivering Isles and KoTN as well as the official downloads, the game's wrapper the plastic wrapper said Oblivion was rated T for Teen. But as soon as the plastic came off it said rated M for mature.

Oblivion and Morrowind is more for advlts, Skyrim is on the kiddish side.

They should of actually used that M rating and not held back as much as they did.

I'm personally glad they kept it as it is, my GF lives with me, would be hard to explain all the crap to her, she hates "mature" themes.

I have a 12 year old son who will not be touching this game. Some of the content is too dark for children, and lets not get started on the decaps. Games have rating systems for a reason.

My 5 year old watches me play, I guess I'm a terrible parent!

What reasons might those be?

I assure you children are exposed to far worse every day, through television, music, their friends ... If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about your son playing Skyrim, because chances are he's already seen a decapitation and whatever else it is you're afraid of him seeing.
But he's your child, and you get to raise him as you please, and you won't hear me say otherwise.

Because NZers aren't a nation of drama queens?

Edit: Or you just really hate THE CHILDREN and don't care about YOUR FUTURE. :woot:

That might be truer than you think. We are known for raising our children tougher (less PC) than, say, America. So we definitely aren't drama queens (most of us...) However, we also have the highest child abuse stats in the 'civilised' world. Makes you wonder...

Some people find looking at the naked human body more offensive than ripping it to pieces. What can I say?

Seriously... our culture is half ass backwards. You can murder, decapitate and burn people in this game but you can't see some skin or slap some silly kid in the face?

Fascinating. I had no idea that some places rated the game as 18 while others at 15.

Yea, I have never understood some people`s mentality when they (even old grannies) can handle blood and violence, but basic nakedness makes them froth at the mouth. I mean being naked is far preferable to being cut open, yes?

Yet you wouldn`t think so seeing people`s responses.

Never understood it.

If a woman's juicy mangos appear on the screen then its a big no no.

Someone getting their head cut off? That's a absolutely fine. Western culture is really backwards sometimes....

Seriously...people complain about this whenever ESRB ratings are brought up, despite being irrelevant to Skyrim's M rating and only barely relevant to Oblvion's M rating.

Its all society, I agree with the nudity aspect (cause really, I don't want to see your parts) but violence is bad to, the latter has been socially accepted in fiction, but not in real life.

PEGI rated it 18, thus I play a Skyrim rated 18.
Not that it matters, it is a recommended age rating. No one can refuse me to buy it by law.
And I'm 14..

Meh, it was a thought.

I guess I'll never understand why some people out there seem to think it's necessary to protect other people from themselves, and/or determine what's "good" or "safe" for everyone else.

Well, it isn't quite that. If you have a 12 year old kid and you don't want him to see teh pormz, he can ride his bike to the store and buy teh pormz video game, then there is kinda a problem. Sure, parent's responsibility but what are they going to do take his bike and make him be fat indoors?

Also, if they are going to let kids play six and violent games, might as well get rid of the age of consent too.

Now while much of Skyrim is a little kiddish, it`s still quite a bit more `real` than Oblivion which I believe was 16 rated.

Now isn`t Skyrim 15 or 16 rated? How did they manage to include the depiction of someone having their head cut off- at least twice and more when you level up, without the rating being uped to 18?

When Gladiator was being made, they had to show decapitations only with someone in a fullface helmet otherwise the movie would`ve been 18.

I dunno. Nudity is a big no. no or 18 rated, but much graphic blood letting is fine. Humans are strange.

A decapitation on its own doesn't warrant an 18 in games or films you blithering idiot.

Plenty of films and games have decapitations at the 15 rating.

I think necromancy, daedric quests and, DB are some of the reasons for the rating

Pretty much. But I still think the rating system does a pretty good job. Manhunt II almost got rated AO not for six, but for sheer violence. Two of my favorite games, Thief: the Dark Project, and Thief II: the Metal Age, were both rated M for what I'm sure was violence, as they had almost no sixual content, graphics slightly below Morrowind, and very little blood and gore. And even then the game encouraged you to minimize violence.

 Eh ... I grew up watching a lot of horror and action movies and I think I turned out fine. Have a gf, a job, a house of my own ... Also, I'm pretty pacifistic. I don't think violent games instill violence or insanity.
