How to marry any character - Including Lydia

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 10:38 pm

Hey everyone,

reading these boards on how to find siibi I noticed that a LOT of people were asking how to marry Lydia and if it was possible.

IT IS NOT possible even though it is apparently listed in a ton of lists.

HOWEVER if you are on the PC, you can set her available for marriage and you can do the same for I'm guessing almost any character. PLEASE BE CAREFUL when doing this. I am in no way responsible for the effects and It wouldn't surprise me if the game crashes when it tries to house your "dragon-wife-husband" in your whiterun house. Also beware that it might initially work but down the line if the character is special in any way it might cause problems. I also have no idea how interactions such as the shop or whatnot will behave. ---SAVE---

So here's how you do it.

First open the console ( ` ) key, which is located to the left of the number 1 that is above the letter Q in English keyboards. If this doesn't open it, google "Skyrim Open Console X Language" where X is your language.

Now Left click on the character you wish to make available for marriage. ---MAKE SURE you are selecting the character.--- Sometimes weapons or even a butterfly gets in the way!!!

Now type

Addfac 19809 1

Hit Enter

Aaaand you're done. Tried it on some random NPC, worked fine, they even established some random shop (Solid Coding, Bethesda), but they couldn't accompany you out (although I don't know if it's standard).

*PLEASE NOTE - You still need the amulet of Mara (found in riften, a priest sells it to you) and to be wearing said amulet. You also need to wait around 24 hours after you request the marriage for it to start! -

Do you get the marriage dialogue and a wedding that way? Or are they just automatically married to you?

You do indeed, and they still offer the "cook" and "shop" options. For all intents and purposes it seems that it sets it so as if the character were designed to be available for marriage. Again, solid coding on the part of bethesda on this one.

That's great! My female khajiit already has Kharjo from the khajiit caravan as her companion, now she can marry him!

This is great news if it turns out to work. I love pc gaming for these sorts of reasons.

Has anyone tried it out to confirm?

I tried the command on the Khajiit merchants, I got nothing from them.

I also tried the command on Ulric, it didn't work either. I figured it since he's a special NPC. So excluding major NPCs and Khajiits, it should work on the rest of the NPCs. :)

Maybe it excludes super heavily scripted characters like Ulric (lol trying to marry him) and those khajiits are constantly moving around as well.

I'm going to try it on Kharjo (the khajiit warrior who protects the caravan that became my companion after I did his quest) when I get home from work.

Thank you so much! I wasn't able to marry Erik (who I should be able to) so I just did this and it worked :)

It brings up the correct dialogue with an NPC, but it seems that a further stage is needed to get Maramal to perform the ceremony: the other priests at the temple congratulate you and he tells you to return the following day, but has nothing further to say on the subject.

Edit: seems you just need to wait until dusk! I guess the clue's in Maramal's initial response...

Definitely trying this asap with Hroki from Markarth... Phwoaarrr.

EDIT: Thanks OP - is there a way of using the console to divorce an NPC? I don't particularly want to kill my current wife so I can marry a new one.
