IGN Says Bethesda's "Golden Reputation Is Tarnished"

Will being meek and silent?

Complaining to a bunch of people that don't pull strings at the game developers' company, in hopes that a trickle down will help, is not really a great master plan

Alright, I'd like to see ANY other game development company make a game the size of Skyrim, with as much content, detail, memory usage, etc etc. and NOT have a multitude of bugs. If anything, Bethesda are damned impressive with the amount of bugs they catch, and they're kind enough to support their modding community.

So, sure, they may not be perfect, but as far as I'm concerned, their the best developers in the industry.

What a great job those kids have at IGN. I mean they get paid to write about "how they feel" even though no one really cares.

This coming from a reviewer that hasn't had a golden reputation since 2001? Argument invalid.

I assume you mean the people whose job it is to read the forums and report back community feedback.

My only worry is that these kind of issues will temper bethesda's spirit, and cause them to focus on simpler more linear gameplay :(

IGN is always good for a laugh (usually a laugh at, that is, not a laugh with).

Where Bethesda might be considered to have a "Golden Reputation" is creating games that remain great RPGs for years after release (with due credit to the role modders play in that as well). Morrowind, Daggerfall, even Oblivion, are classics, and rightly so.

They don't have a golden reputation for releasing bug free games.

But the text is kind of funny -"Skyrim is great but some Ps3 players are unhappy. Bethesda's Golden Reputation is marred by this ugliness".

And by community feedback you mean?

There are very different feedback from very different users, is not like a thread with people arguing will be taken seriously as a "community feedback".
The game is buggy, report the bug. That is all the feedback needed.

Watch how all the whiners who discounted the great reviews because "the media is biased and corrupt" will none the less latch on to THAT with both hands.

Just wait, here they come....

Lol basically. Have to ignore those who will defend bethesda even to their own detriment. Bethesda needs to be held accountable for their busted game.

Not exactly what I was talking about, but I can't count how many times I've seen a company hasten to fix a problem because a fervor pitch of complaining was reached.

Yes. The hope that this will get communicated and it goes up the flagpole is, well...what percentage would you place it in?

The real purpose of the thread is to vocalize disappointment or frustration, to vent negative feelings that somebody is otherwise powerless to do anything about. That's simply human nature and it's not necessarily "wrong". While a chance that Beth will see it does exist, I can't imagine it doing anything in excess of providing a frustration vent, in practical terms

Scroll down to #10

They created a significant amount of hype through a truly successful and effective marketing campaign and then released an unpolished game with more than a few bugs.

While it's true that Bethesda did this with all his games, definitely one can see that their hype backfired in a critical way...

Well sure, if the complaint is that the media is biased in favor of triple-A development studios that doesn't mean they will never deign to point out flaws. It simply means it's less likely, or that those flaws will be overlooked in a review. One might even argue that an article like this really highlights the problem Beth has on the quality assurance end as even IGN has taken the time to write up an article about their "tarnished reputation".
It's called good outweighing the bad.

Exactly. High quality and full of bugs is an oxygen moron. Bugthesda failed.

Not really, since "flawed masterpiece" is a valid description in the creative world.

YMMV of course, but quality can be measured in more then just "smoothness of running". Lord knows I consider Bloodlines to be high quality, but bugs? Oh it had a few.

I here was me thinking that after Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout that reputation wasn't golden anymore. :teehee:

Fix your grammar, please? "I here was me" does not make sense.

I never heard of this "Golden Reputation", unless it's that they make great, but buggy games as someone mentioned. That said, being able to make their games last for hundreds of hours I think they are head and shoulder above most game-developers.

I don't have any delusions of Bethesda or any company responding to their customers, I just don't like someone telling someone else that complaining about something will do nothing. Because doing nothing is guaranteed to do nothing.

Well if Skyrim is a shirt I have been putting it through the wash a lot and it has yet to fall apart. So I guess I am allowed to consider it high quality depsite the bugs (of which I have experienced very few serious ones, thank goodness).

Hyperbole is funny.

No one is saying that people having problems should be quiet. By all means: I play on 'x' platform and I keep having 'x' problem. I've tried to do this, that and the other. I'm fed up. Ect. Those type of complaints are more likely to be looked at and taken seriously; might even help them find things.

Buthesda sux; betathesda stinks; booboo thesda can't code good' and all that other troll bullsh*t that that other guy keeps spewing doesn't help anything. Just spamming nastiness doesn't help anybody. See the difference?

So you went into Skyrim with Bethesda having a Golden Reputation in your estimates?

Do you have a short memory? If Bethesda has a GR, but bugs mare that, and Bethesda releases often have bugs at launch which are steadily fixed by Bethesda and the modding community... I guess Bethesda is constantly damaging its own GR but then builds it back up till the next release when the same happens on and on forever!

It's not really hyperbole. How many shirts need to fall apart before we can adequately describe something as a poor product? I have had zero bugs myself. I also had zero problems with New Vegas. My issues with Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines came down to a single door not opening. Something I found a solution for rather easily. But I'm not going to describe any of these games as particularly stable (at least not at release). The idea that because some percentage of people have experienced no issues, anyone who has is some sort of outlier is ridiculous.
