Imagined Barriers Faction Locks and Such

Post » Fri Jan 04, 2013 9:43 pm

They say the megaserver concept is there to prevent you from having to make a new character to play with your friends who decided to play on a different server than yours, but since factions are locked, you'll have to make a new character to play with most of these friends anyway.

So one has to wonder if either the developers can't agree on what kind of game they want to make, or that there's a different reason for the megaserver concept than what they want us to believe.

Question:
"Is it all PvP in Cyrodil or is there more to it?"

Answer:
"(Its) literally the size of The Elder Scrolls: IV Oblvion...We have lots of things to do there besides PvP, but once you go in there you are in a PvP zone. So even if you're going through a dungeon or if you're trying to find some very rare crafting items, chances are you're going to see a player from an enemy alliance. And then its up to you two to figure out what to do from there."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydkXzJKXwjY

The developer pointing out something that should be obvious.

Are you worried that your friends will choose to play in another faction, thus preventing you from playing together? You can still dungeon dive and PvE in a world as large as TES: IV.

Are you upset about the lack of free-form/open world PvP? Do you wish you had to worry about enemy players while you were leveling or questing? Go play in Cyrodil.

I think what they were meaning when they said "And then its up to you two to figure out what to do from there." is if the two people to decide to fight, flee or ignore each other. I doubt there will be an option to group and probably not even a way to communicate.

Two people who were not grouped, but help to kill a monster, will get full rewards and full experience.

I'm gonna dig up the dev interview where they said this is how it will be in TESO

Heard of a spot you could easily check any Dev interview from last year you want... http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1434330-the-zenimax-video-interviews-of-2012/

GW2 lets you just tag enemies and receive reward... that interview states that both work together to kill it. I think there is a difference. Tagging would be do more than just a single hit. So hit it a few times, then move to the next mob.

Plus I wouldn't take pre-alpha stage interviews as hard cold facts. I fear people are going to complain when the features they had in pre-alpha don't make it to beta.

If the game is as integrated into Facebook etc. as people think it will be, wouldn't you just be able to talk cross faction via that route anyway?

Or Vent, Teamspeak, etc...

Just wondering why, if someone were planning on playing with some specific friends, they wouldn't decide which faction had a three race combo that would make everyone happy?

It's kinda like... "I want to play with my buddy, but he chose Horde instead of Alliance like I did so now I can't play with him and this game isn't what they said it would be..."

I still would like to be able explore the whole world at some point, I still believe you should be able to /say /yell /emote to the enemy factions within range, but to hang and adventure together cross-faction in anyway? In this game... ain't gonna happen.

There is no difference. You are just misunderstanding the system in GW2.

Yeah been awhile since I played GW2 but as I remember it was smarter then just hitting it one or two times and getting something. Pretty sure you had to do a certain percentage of damage to be eligible for loot/coin/exp. Furthermore as far as named mobs and needing to fulfill a quest objective you just needed to hit it a few times and be there when it dies to get credit for the kill, WoW does this now as well. It helps so you can get quest credit and don't have to wait forever for respawn and fight others to tag it. But as far as loot pretty sure you need to do a certain amount of damage to be eligible for loot.

Thanks for the link, I did actually miss that and I am pretty sure I watched that interview before. I still don't think you will be able to run around a busy PvE battle area and hit everyones mob once and get exp and rewards, I could be wrong about that but to me thats kind of silly to say the least. Oh and if that is the case and I am in beta I will do my best to show them that you need to do more then hit each mob once. I will be making video of me going around a busy PvE area hitting everyones mob once then stand and wait for the rewards and then posting it for them to see and get their feedback on it.

Well they have already said that's how the game is designed....so....ya, they are.

But it really isn't a huge issue. I'm going to admit to something:

In GW2, in dungeons, I some times switch enemies before the one I'm working on is dead. I want to make sure I hit as many enemies as possible to get as much experience as possible. But people usually only do that when the content is easy. It isn't prevalent. Winning the battle comes first because you get no EXP if you die.

If tagging mobs without actualy fighting them floats someones boat, well let him enjoy himself. I cant imagine myself doing this childish stuff when the combat is ESO is going to be so much fun. Its the point of the game isnt it? To have fun. If someones definition of fun is exploiting game mechanics to get as much exp. points as possible with no effort... well I pity such people. The behavior you deem irritating can always be filtered using ignore list

It's amazing how little conception of role-playing there is in these discussions. I can see someone role-playing a scheming, cowardly fellow, who would behave in just such an underhanded way. And it seems to me that "reputation" would only feed that role-play. :D

Here is a horrible tale of 2 grown ass men that are planning to play TESO, but will be rocked by something none of them could have possibly seen coming in their wildest dreams.

This is Real Life [ scary music ]

Imagine its late at night, you log onto TESO on your Nord and its dark, very dark. You look at your friends list and its EMPTY [scary music].

So you set out in Cyrodiil and your alone [tear rolls down your cheek]. There is fighting everywhere and your scared.

You never joined a guild because Billy hasnt told you which guild he was going to join so now you can't logicaly make a decision for yourself [ more scary music].

You wonder why you havent heard from Billy its been 2 whole days since launch and he lives next door, you also work at the same job. Is Billy mad at me [flashback of Billy when he was a kid]. You ask yourself how am I ever going to play this game without him, I don't understand anything and I'm so scared [shiver in the corner wrapped in a blanket]

So even though it might cost your beloved friendship and its also going against everything you stand for, you join a guild without discussing it with Billy [Uncertain Music]

Suddenly you hear your phone ringing [ring ring]

Billy! Billy is that you! Can you hear me Billy! What Faction are you!!! [freaking out]

Then you hear a voice, "No this is your mother, are you coming over to dinner on Sunday? I'am making meatloaf." [another tear rolls down your cheek]" Yes mother, I love your meatloaf, I'll bring the family".

Suddenly you get a text message, ITS FROM BILLY! [happy music] Yo dude, wtf thought you were gonna roll Daggerfall Convenant

Rage fills your mind and body as you can't believe you picked the wrong faction and already joined a guild [loud scary music]

What are you going to do now?

You storm through the room throwing chairs, couches and the computer desk as you scream out loud at the top of your lungs "How could I be so stupid, its ruined, its all ruined. I quite. BUT I WANT TO BE EBONHEART PACT AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

You hear a knock at the door [ knock knock] Its Billy he looks furious, "Dude man, we agreed on DC not EP. I can't believe you would do such a thing" [tears rolling down Billy's cheeks]

"That is the last straw, we are no longer friends! Billy out!" [Storms next door to his house]

You are crushed, you can't believe this has happend to you. You look up at the sky, its a full moon. You scream out at the moon "DAMN YOU ZOS!!!!!!"

With your head hung low you walk back into your house. Your phone rings [ring ring]

Yeah Mom, cancel dinner I'm not coming.

Don't let this happen to you, plan ahead with your friends. [scary music with a puppy crying]

Basic,y you're right, what if my friend started as a nord and I start as Breton? Same problem we had with the 'joining different servers'. But I don't see it working either, to choose a faction a race and a class mixed together, it's just like when wow would let you be an Orc in the alliance ... On the other hand, you were able to travel anywhere in wow.

Personally I think the major point of the megaserver is scalability. So far all big MMOs since WoW have taken a massive dive in population, which creates ghost servers, hurting the population even more and prompting the provider to make server merges, which are a hassle and cause further bad press.

The megaserver is a practical solution to this problem since the game world's zones are going to be full even if most players stop playing, there'll simply be fewer instances of each zone. WoW is currently doing something similar to its lower populated zones by stuffing people from different servers together in the same gamespace.

But that's getting a bit off-topic.

Great post Eric in NJ, I had a good laugh!

Though my ending would have gone something like this....

With your head hung low you walk back into your house pick up the phone and dial ZOS customer support...

For some strange reason the phone is answered after the first ring and its not a recording its a real honest to goodness ZOS customer service rep! *snicker*

Zenimax Online Studios customer service, my name is Bob, how can I help you today?

Well Sir, when I first heard about Elder Scrolls Online, the lead game designer I think his name was Matt Firor said that me and my friend Billy would have no problems hooking up once we both logged in for the first time. However it seems like Matt lied to us because he never said anything about us ending up in different factions, how are we supposed to play together now?

Ok, ok calm down, so what faction did you roll in sir?

Ebonheart Pact and my friend Billy is in Daggerfall Covenant! And now because of this Billy and I are no longer friends how could you do this to us???!?!?

Now instead of two friends playing together he is my enemy and if we meet in the game I am supposed to kill him!

How come you guys have locked races to these factions? If you just would have let us choose our race and our faction this would have never happened. Not to mention that if it did happen I could still use your mega server tech to change to Billy's faction but you guys locked me out and made me his enemy!

I can asure you Sir I had nothing to do with this, I would suggest you or your friend Billy reroll and make sure this time you both are in the same faction. Does this help at all?

No! It most certainly does not I want to play a Dark Elf I am Drizzt Do'Urden! damn you! And I would move to Billy's faction but your super duper mega server tech apparently does not allow for that! Not so super duper now is it?

Well Sir there is nothing I can do, thats the way the game works, have a nice day! *click* *dial tone*

I've never had the problem of me and my friends rolling on different servers anyway. Since we're friends, we talk about it and roll on the same one. And no, we don't use facebook for it.

Why can't he just roll another character in DC so he can play with Billy? Then he can play his EP character when billy isn't on. :)

When some people say "open world pvp", what they really mean is that they dont want other players to have the option of a pvp free zone to go to.

It was a sacastic story .

Billy also fired his ex-friend the next day, he doesnt like EP.

The lesson today was, be careful which faction you choose. You could end up losing your best friend and your job. Also will miss your mom's meatloaf.
