Interview With Creative Director Paul Sage

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:07 pm

I'm still not into it at all, but (aside from the whole MMO thing) is that this just doesn't seem like Elder Scrolls at all. It's something else wearing a TES skin.

Quick question, how does the concept of a heroic/normal version of the same dungeon work when you're using Public non-phased dungeons?

The interview was nice to see. Most of things he talked about sounds good but I'm disappointed because he doesn't explain us how the combat and control system are going to be. Anyway with all the info I have heard this far I think TES:O will be the best MMO but the worst TES game ever.

Theres nothing that oposes PVP and RP to walk together, but thats not what you see on MMO games.

I played wow for years and was pretty clear to me that the PVE crowd were the ones that care about lore and RP, meanwhile the PVP people were all about the best gear, build, team set ups...

So, its not impossible to see pvp players roleplaying, but they are very very rare.

Part of the problem there also lies with the type of PvP, if you do instanced battlegrounds that give arbitrary currency rewards then no, you will not have a strong RP basis for your PvPers. However I don't believe this game is like that. True PvP should be World PvP, so that it happens naturally where you would expect it to, and has an actual tangible reward in the actual WORLD for participating. If you notice in WoW, RP World PvP events usually have very small turn-outs because world pvp gives nothing but a tiny modicum of honor.

In TES:O let us presume instead that PvP affects your entire faction, there is no arbitrary reset on control points, so every mine you capture, every city you take, actually makes a lasting difference for your entire faction. If they do that and do it right, then I can see RP and PvP going hand in hand.

Wait for more interviews - I have a feeling Game Informer is sitting on several. I bet an interview with the UI team, or someone in charge of combat or character design will answer some of your questions. Maybe they have an interview with Firor himself...

Woo. This interview made me kind of excited ^^

My biggest hope is that I could roleplay my character in this game and not being thrown away from immersion by other players.

For example, exploration would require a tremendous amount of work in the game world to be meaningful and, judging by the leaked shots, that doesn't seem to be the case.

How can you gauge what exploration of the world will be like from looking at a few screenshots?

Makes me feel a lot more confident about the game. And they've finally put a stop to the 'ZOMG Y U NO FOLLOW LORE!' complaints. Well done Zenimax!
They've came up with a good reason for the alliances, but not why Cyrodiil is just like it was in Oblivion, geologically speaking.

What do you mean geologically speaking? Do mean the fact htat it is still in the center of the map? Oh, that would be geographical. Do you mean it has the same mountains or rocks or something?

It should be a jungle.

I cannot say I am 100% sure, but one of the leaked screenshots clearly shows an Ayleid ruin in the background.

We don't know how Cyrodiil will look, one screen can't tell us, also its a huge area, would be silly to think it is 100% jungle.

Some retcons are more forgivable than others, I think it's safe to say that any obscure reference to a particular place or landmark or person mentioned in some lore book is something they can retcon around or away. I don't recall anything other than the guidebooks in past games mentioning Cyrodiil as a jungle, I think it's forgiveable to take away Cyrodiil as a jungle and keep it as it was in Oblivion, mainly because we're getting all 9 provinces, you will experience every biome anyway, you want jungles? go Elsweyr!

There was some discussion/hints in the GameInformer article which suggested that Cyrodil may be in a state similar to what Kvatch was....battle torn and full of conflict/destruction that the 3 factions will fight in during pvp.

If you want to discuss HeroEngine, remember there is a separate topic for that http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1371641-hero-engine-discussion-merged-similar-topics/

Hum, Ayleids ruins are known to be in Cyrodiil, so if you see a screenshot with an Ayleid ruin in the background, you can be sure it's in Cyrodiil. As said screenshot show no sign of jungle anywhere, then we can conclude that Cyrodiil will be the same as in Oblivion. His assumption seems legit.
That said, I hope that this ruin was an exception and that good parts of Cyrodiil will be covered in jungle.

TOR peaked at 1.7 million and dropped to 1.3 since February. That's horrible.

Yea not sure what world you live in but here on earth that is far from horrible.

Anyway back on topic.

I think the interview was great and my favorite part was when he was asked to use one sentence to tell someone who wouldn't normally want to play an online game why they would want to play TESO, and that was " because i get to explore and experience the World of TES...online with friends". That one line describes TES games 100% nail on the head, "to freely explore a living fantasy world" and that IS what makes TES games what they are and that is as much a reason to play TESO as anything you can bring to the table.

What do you not understand by "I cannot say I am 100% sure"?

There will be no jungle, if you want jungle go Elsweyr, thats where the jungles are.

Cyrodiil's landscape was retconned, We need to come to terms with that, and there are a lot more Oblivion players who have no idea that in past lore Cyrodiil was a jungle, so if the MMO makes it into a jungle you'll have to deal with lots of Oblivion fans wondering why they retconned it (and do you really want to deal with the fallout of a recton's retcon? Let's leave Cyrodiil as it is, the current set up will make it fine for the PvP gameplay which will be based there. We will still have jungles, snowy ice peaks, taiga, deserts, forests, plains, mushroom covered ashlands, swamps, and every other biome in-between, I think we can let go of old Cyrodiil, if we cling desperately to every scrap of paper invented for the lore like it's our dying child, then we'll never be able to give this new game a fair chance.

Most of Elsweyr is desert and grassland, not jungle. The jungle is only to the south.
