Jun Long and his arrogant wife

"We're watching you...scum!"

Well I also gave suggestions on how to greatly lessen interacting with Marcy and Jun in Sanctuary, even if you live there. My current character is living there now and rarely ever bumps into them unless she's looking for them for some reason, or she intentionally goes into the bar where they all gather each evening.

Don't worry, the Ballad of Marcy and Jun is actually the entire focus of the first two DLC releases. We'll have plenty of time to hear all about their deeply meaningful feelings and innermost thoughts. Innermost thoughts . Innermost thoughts. Innermost thoughts.

(You can't kill them now because then you'd find the synth components.)

To be fair to Jun Long, he is married to Marcy. If it was me, I'd be depressed all the time too.

They'd work as characters if you had gotten to connect with them before their son died, (also, you had gotten more than 2 minutes with your own family), it would've created a great opportunity to have some very empathetic characters, that serve as a harsh reminder to the dangers of the wasteland. As it is, the game just tells you "feel bad for these two" without ever doing anything to build up an actual bond.

They're just lazily executed.

Just give them some free tickets to the memory den. That should cheer them up.

Thanks for the bloody spoilers, people!

This was a fun thread until that.

And a sincere thanks for the link to the Shut Up mod.

I agree on the more than two minutes with your own family part. There's no real bond beyond seeing a baby lying in a crib and a few meaningless words before it's off to the vault.

As for Marcy and Jon. I don't need to know them before their child died. As I said, it would be sufficient, if they'd told their story once and than went on their not so merry way. The broken record part is what's making them a nuisance. But, as has been said, that's not a new Beth speciality. One wonders how they could think, any player wanted to hear one liners for ever and ever.

I find them to be well done as characters and are life like.

I was looking forward to maybe have a side quest to try to get them out of the grief state. Maybe in a DLC.

That's why people don't like them. Most people don't like to admit it but the majority of people irritate us. It's no fault of our own it's just that we are such unique individuals in that there are a billion things to like and million more to love but we generally only choose a handful of each. Pretty low odds that we're going to find more than a handful of like minded people to call friends during the limited interaction with individuals the average person has in one's lifetime.

General world wide consensus is that people svck and it's true we can't stand each other.

So I gather, repeating the same story over and over is something impressing you. When I heard their story the first time, I was actually impressed, but when they started pulling their "work for Belaphor" act, I simply chalked it up to the usual Bethesada oneliner. That's called destroying one's own stories and what could have become an interesting tale, was turned into a "censored" (inserted by me) moment.

Yeah it was mainly just for my own amusemant. Can't wait for some mods though to make it a reality. Along with trapping people inside power armor, if you remove the core.

That may be why some people don't like them, but I don't like them because they're permanent and largely useless fixtures in Sanctuary Hills unless you want to give up the opportunity to join a faction they don't even contribute anything to, and their story, as poignant as it is in the moment, becomes little more than an annoyance after the fiftieth repetition.

They're victimized more by the limitations of their programmed behaviors than they are by their backstory.

I've lost loved ones and I didn't go taking it out on people, don't care how you handle your grief, but if it involves taking it out on other people, then fully expect to lose your teeth when you open your mouth to the wrong person. The fact that these npcs, marcy in particular can say what they please without backlash is rather immersion breaking. Yes she is beyond annoying, and NO her character is not written well. Bethesda has a long way to go before they realize how humans actually act. I'm just thankful for mods that let me get rid of her every new game I start.

I guess, at a certain age everyone has. I certainly have. That's not the point, since their tale brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it. It's not about the tale, which is actually a good one. It's the Mary Sueng afterwardsw by reducing them to repetitive oneliner deliverers instead of building on the premise.

I understand the absolutely valid complaint of them being repetitive but it seems that these two are more irritating than most and it's because of their attitude. I don't find Sturges irritating yet he is just as repetitive as they are. Knowing that, i'm not going to sit here and pretend it's all about the repetitiveness because it's more than that for seemingly most of people commenting about what they have to say and how they say it.

I can dig it. For what it's worth, I can't stand anybody else in that group either, Sturges included, although he's the least annoying since all he'll say to me after taking credit for everything I've built is "I'm busy!" or "My Daddy had a Duct Tape fixation!".

They're all rather poorly designed, imo. Clearly we were intended to care about them on some level, but there's not enough to them to care about, and there's no way to vent that frustration in game. That sort of persistently present design flaw tends to irritate people.

Ha ha, removing the fusion core trapping someone inside would be funny, but a fatal design flaw, like that one little area that if you shoot into it you can make the entire Death Star explode....

At Revere Beach there's a spiked pole. It has three corpses impaled on it, wrapped in barb wire. I think of the Long's and Momma Murphy every time I see it. They'd make a great decoration for Sanctuary arranged as such.

I love you. Let us decorate the bridge in their lifeless corpses please. As for the source of the Longs grief, I hope the raiders kicked out their knees so they had to kneel, had guards force them to watch and I hope they dragged it out as long as they could. Some might say that makes me an [censored] but hey. I'm not the one who designed the Longs to elicit that reaction from me.

The problem I think extends beyond these particular npcs. bethesda's open world games all share a glaring problem, NPCs just bothering you when you aren't directly interacting with them. It's like when you walk around diamond city and different npcs go on about how they don't want to be bothered, or they don't talk to strangers, when you aren't the one initiating the conversation. The dialogue has always been unnatural and plastic and annoying when you hear it every single time you just glance by any random npc. I am looking forward to a mod that disables "proximity chat" for npcs.

It's about all the original five. And it's about them because many of us share the same habitat as they do. Oh, and I do find Sturges as irritating, constantly running his trap on how he can fix anything and what his father told him. Same with Mama Murphy. But her you can park in a comfy chair in a remote house and place a hazard sign over the entrance.
