Just got a controller for PC...any tips would be helpful

Honestly, I'm a jack of all trades with input devices, so anything I'd say wouldn't help.

Go with what feels natural.

I play on console and the only complaint is that I don't have the control I would like while aiming my bow. My bro. plays on PC and it seem that the accuracy with a mouse is just a little better then that of the controller, in order to get a good head shot I need to zoom in to get a better aim, if I just aim without zooming in I hardly ever score a nice head shot.

I never had this issue with a controller. I almost always land a hit. Still, I suppose you haven't really gotten used to anticipating how sensitive your thumbstick is. Try adjusting your sensitivity.

I`m sorry but I cannot agree that a controller can be anything as good as a mouse.

I used a controller once because I still have a console. I even got pretty good at shooty and such games with it to the point that I can see why a lot of people like controllers. But I have never seen it match the ease and precision and swiftness of a mouse keyboard combo. How many people use auto-aim on their gamepads and forget to mention that? No way am I using auto aim.

I don`t know whether it was 1.4 that did it, but now I`ve discovered I can map nearly every key to where I want. It`s just that it isn`t explained in the manual or anywhere what key does what. Some keys have dual and even triple uses. I had to test and experiment before I figured what keys do what and then assign them to my mouse and keyboard.

But now I have it sussed. Perhaps I shold post a user manual on what the keys do and what else they control because the game don`t tell you.

I would say it is the gamepad controller users who think there`s no other better controller and need to mentally attune their minds to what a mouse+keyboard can do.

I`ll grant you one thing though, Bethesda and Microsoft have gone out of their way to discourage people from learning the mouse keyboard and force them to spend cash grabbing a controller.

I got it set to where I like it, what I ment was that if I want an arrow to hit the mark in the eye it's kinda hard to line up the crosshairs, where as I'm watchen the bro. play on PC with a mouse and it seems like the accuracy is just a little better, or he has more control over the crosshair. He explained it as the x and y axis on the controller is more ridged then that of the mouse, I don't know, when playen halo I'm a marksman I could hit a fly at 1000 yards , but really, I find it reacts diff. compared to how it acts in a FPS.

You cannot get the kind of precision on a thumbstick that you can on a mouse. It`s simple, plain logic and I`ve also seen the evidence as a friend I know uses the controller. Don`t let anyone tell you they can.

Then, how do I get enough precision to land the head shots I do? My point is, that a controller has enough precision to do the job. A mouse and keyboard can let you hit the dime from a hundred yards, but do you really need to? Most targets are bigger than that, unless you bought skyrim to hunt butterflies, did you?

I think inorder for someone to truely understand it has to be shown, I just cannot come up with a good way of explaining it??? But there is a diff. when it comes to TES anyway. The mouse just seems to be just a little bit( not a whole lot)more accurate then that of the joy-stick on the controller. I know when it comes to guns and bows there is a big diff. on how you judge your shot, but I (not blowen my own horn) am an excellent shot and I still look like a green horn sometimes while tryen to land those lond-distance shots.

I had a low opinion of 'game controllers' to until I actually had to use one - on my PS3. Loved it!

- yes I agree - for many "target" type applications a mouse is easier to aim
- I'm old and absent minded and usually rotate playing many titles - I have a hard time remembering game pad mapping let alone Keyboard mapping!!!
- Its difficult to impossible to see a keyboard with 3D shutter glasses on
- I sit in a sand chair in front of my TV while gaming - no place for a keyboard/mouse

Just before Skyrim was released I picked up the PC version (with all DL content) from Bestbuy for a song. Have not played it out of the 'starter cave' as it does not natively support a 360 game pad.

I have only played Skyrim with a 360 game pad. I like being able to sit however whereever I want while playing. To each their own.

True and the only reason why people use controllers is because the Xbox360 controller works with such PC games now and some only support Xbox controller rather than use Direct input for every kind of PC controller. In the end it's just easy for devs to use XBox controller because such games are Xbox ports anyway.

Amazing how developers cannot use Direct input with their games proper, instead to just make it even easier and just support an Xbox controller and bypass all that great work Microsoft did with DirectX. I was forced to buy an XBox360 controller so my wife could play GTA IV proper for driving.

I know, I know. But when it comes to my shot I tend to get a bit aniel, if I'm tryen to get em in the eye, then I want to see that arrow sticken out of their eye when I check my shot. I find you need to go into zoom and move the crosshair very slowly to where you want it to be, where it seem like you can just do it with a mouse. Now don't get me wrong, this is the only problem I have with the controller and yes it is minor, when it comes to everything else IMO the controller is superior.( But I'm a consoley, not a PCer so I'm not that used to mouse and key-board.)

I don`t bother with that Perk and save my points for other Perks because with a mouse I can aim and hit manually easily from a distance.

heck, I`ve had friends come round and say, "What did you hit? I didn`t see anything!" Cos they`re so used to the lower resolutions of their tvs and having the controller auto-aim at everything.

Yes I would be very interested in seeing a manual about is !!! Please do one : )

I use a wireless gaming mouse. I like that I can program the buttons on it, and it's extremely accurate. Being wireless I can sit back and relax. If i need the keyboard it's close by.

Yes to each his own  freedom of choice is great !!!

After playing this with the controller I now agree with all those that say this is a console game with the pc as an after thought.

They made the interface with controls, such as hotkeys, that cannot be used with a controller. I guess they thought "let's make an interface for a console," followed by the afterthought "now let's make an interface for a platform that can use all the stuff we designed into it." They sure do think in strange sequence.

Actually, those hotkeys have a very "tacked on afterwards" feeling. They're not very well integrated and not very intuitive.

You can have the regular x-box controller auto aim? I know when I pull the bow and hit the trigger for an arrow, the aim is in which ever direction the char is pointing. Not nessasarily at what I want to hit. Or are you meaning the game pad controllers?

1. Rumble.
2. Variable speed.
3. Comfort.
4. Preference.
5. Etc.

There are a bunch of different reasons why a lot of people consider the controller superior to mouse and keyboard. You can't just automatically assume that the mouse and keyboard are better because you get more hotkeys. I play this game on the Xbox 360 and the PC, and I've started using the Xbox controller on both systems. I vastly prefer having two hotkeys and using the favorites menu for others as opposed to using eight hotkeys.

You also can't use the argument that mouse+keyboard users will get a speed/accuracy advantage over controller users, because this is a single-player only game. I hate trying to play games with so many different buttons that you have to press, and the eight hotkeys just send it over the edge.

It starts to remind me of World of Warcraft. I quit WoW the same week I tried it out, for the reason that the controls were to confusing to get down.

I'm not following. My TV has the maximum commercially available screen resolution. Also, your continuous whining about controller auto-aiming is irrelevant here. There is no such thing for Skyrim.

Yes, clearly developers feel joypad controllers are so awesome they add cheating autoaim and aim assist because pads of crap for aiming. A mouse has way better speed and accuracy over a joypad and you people would get owned in MP if you used one on PC servers.

Nicest things available....? Give me a break. Why would I be playing on the Xbox 360 if I could afford the nicest things available? The only real choice is PC. No, my TV is 1080p, but that doesn't mean it cost me $144,000.

Don't mind him, it's whining PC Elitism. This "Auto-aim" has nothing to do with Skyrim.

(( I'm too old to have dexterous enough thumbs, it's todays generation. Same goes with texting, call me old fashioned, I prefer mouse and keys. ))

same here, i tried to use a pad playing gears of war on my sister's xbox 360 and it wasn't simple for me...i'm to much used to keyboard+mouse hehe :)
the only game i would love to buy a 360 Pad is Dirt 3  it's hard do do the Gimkhana using arrow keys lol

I couldn't tell you if there is any aim assist on the console version b ut the point is that a lot of games do use it. It's not really an issue in Skyrim because there is not much aiming to do unless you use a bow all the time and the game doesn't revolve around aiming.

I wasn't referring to everything you own, I was referring to your TV and only your TV. Not everyone can afford a 1080p TV. I can't, and my family can't.

I myself saved for months to build my PC and still leaned heavily on my credit line to pay for it. I eventually managed to pay it off but it took weeks of saving. And not everyone has the same $8.50 an hour, 24 hours a week job I have, and have more to pay for than just a monthly car payment and phone bill that I have to pay.

And not everyone has that money to spend on a TV. But we're getting off topic here now. If you want to continue discussing it, I'd be more than happy to do so via PM.

Then again, the OP's request has been pretty much solved. So... I guess I'll just go. Like I said, I'm available via PM if you so wish. I love a good discussion.
