Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Thread #6

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 3:21 pm

I'm having a lot of fun with this game so far, and I believe it deserves it's own discussion thread.

So.. Discuss! What kind of character are you playing?

I'm playing a male Varani, and I'm mostly investing in Finese and Sorcery. I'm using the Faeblades and chakrams, and using the grapple hook ability from the might skill to pull myself to different enemies and slashing them with my blades, I'm almost untouchable. I find this a good combo

Was planning on making my traditional battlemage, but after donning the robes you find in the tutorial dungeon, i went full mage :hehe:

Love the art style, the characters, world and monsters have a very fantasy look upon them. Combat system is fun too, though not too challenging. Magic really has oomph to it, and the mage weapons are fun to use too. Well, except scepters, they're just guns :hehe: Questlines have been nothing special so far (though i'm not far into it yet, not started any factions either), but the amount of dialogue every person you can interact with has is quite a lot considering it's all voice acted. And voice acted quite good.

A fantastic fantasy game, in short

Been loving the game so far. Was having a bit of a hard time getting into the game at first, but after about five hours of playtime, something just clicked. I put about ten hours into the game just yesterday, and that says a lot, considering I haven't been playing games too extensively as of late.

As for my character, I chose an Almain fighter. He mainly sticks to melee combat, using a long sword. I do use a bow and some magic for good measure, though that's mainly for quickly picking off weakened enemies at a distance. Not planning on putting too many points into any of those.

BTW, is there a level cap, and what is it? And does anyone know what determines how much hitpoints and mana increase at level up?

Hmm, seems to be a patch up. And yet another feature Origin has and Steam doesn't, a "play without updating" button :goodjob:

I was starting with an Almain male and clicking randomize on the character create menu. Out popped a blond haired, clean shaven guy. I named him Curtis to honor my hero Curt Schilling. So far I am playing as a warrior who attacks with swords and staves, but also plans to dabble in some mana based magic when the need arises.

Is choice and consequence a factor in the game as far as any of you can see? I mean, do you get to choose how to approach quests and present your character, have different outcomes/dispositions result, and build up a character reputation that NPCs recognize... or something along those lines?

Ok Seti, I have found one so far after about 6 hours through with 3 different characters. I have made a town disappear from the map, with only my house there  Problem is, you have to pass that boring Gohart.
Spoiler

Connerac could be saved or doomed through player actions.
I found exploring for lorestone has much more incentive than learning shouts in Skyrims. There are some really interesting and fun mini stories there.

The tresh are pretty tough opponents, especially when together with other mobs, which they often do. I think there's some level scaling that makes challenges somewhat adequate to your level as long as you're in that area with that level range. The tresh is quick, has 3 forms of attacks and its projectiles are pretty fast. It's easy to fight alone, but with other mobs around, dodging or blocking attacks from all sides is very tricky. I got overconfident once and got hit ONCE, which it punted me into other mobs when they chain roundhouse kick+impaled me to death, from 100% to 0%, no time for potions or anything at all.

This game lack venues where you are locked down to one small arena to fight off tough opponents.

Spoiler

When you're fighting the Widow, you have to face her centipede type pets and they are pretty interesting fights. Could make things really rough if you are overconfident. Their poison bullets home in to you and they predict your dodge path to pounce you, so they are quite fun to fight with at hard mode.

I'm looking forward to more challenging encounters where you need to face all sorts of mobs at the same time so you have to deploy strategy rather than mere reflex. I am currently playing a seedy stealth type dagger rogue specialized in assassination, an evil mage that rage destruction in her path, and a judical "cleric" might/sorcery of the Fire god. I'm gonna rage more havoc on my mage first.

Ah, did that questline yesterday with the good way and saved it, nice to hear it's not a meaningless choice.

But does aiding the man in the village instead of the one in the caves make a difference? And i assume letting the village get destroyed prevents you from getting upgrades to the house?

Somewhat
Spoiler

The guy who sent you gets to be mayor, and he's a real chicken sending you to the fae. So I decided to join the Widow and killed everyone in town.
And yes since I killed everyone before I finished all the quests, one of it failed automatically, but I'm content with the result and proceeded.

I think the foreplay is a bit too long, 1/5 to the whole clip is already enough for me. Other than that, nice mesh up of the kills.

Aye, well, I have been thinking about making it shorther , but I decided to leave it as it is. I thought it could invoke mysterious and epic atmosphere before the main part of video starts.

I think that whatever Amkiwtos Production Presents could be be put at the front with same style front for a brief few seconds rather than a completely out of place font style and extra length.

If there is one thing in this game i don't like, it's the music. Plain and boring compared to Beth's games. Esepcially the battle music, it's the same regardless of encounter, boss or place. Maybe it changes when i get out of Dalenthar, but for now it's utterly boring.

KoA > Skyrim

although i love skyrim, koa is just a lot more fun. it looks nicer (nice colours and cartoonish graphics which i like) combat is actually FUN. performance is almost flawless for me and it just feels better. skyrim is still one of my favourites and always will be but at times it can feel depressing where as koa puts me on a good buzz when i play it

the next elder scrolls game should focus on a rich colourful world and not a grey bleak battlefield (although there are some beautiful places in skyrim) they did it with oblivion

my opinion

Love the art style

This is the only thing that's really turning me off from the game. To high fantasy and oversized weapons for me but everything else sounds great.

rollin w/ Sorcery for now

Staves & Chakrams

Haven't respecced so still have 1 pt in lightning (won't be keeping it though :P) and I grabbed a pt in the fire spell....

Think I'm prolly going to focus on the Ice spell instead, but not entirely sure. I know I want Heal and Summon, and eventually the master 3 element spell.... Ice has advantage that it's only 1 spell slot, unlike Fire which has 2 spell slots due to the way the base spell works.

I plan to expand into Might eventually I think, where I'll use 1 might weapon and 1 sorcery weapon.

Biggest misfortune is lack of spell slots (gamepad).... I think you should be able to map spells to the Item radial... would be the perfect place to put your toggle spells.

Agreed. I turned on the toggle spell, then remapped it with something else.

Too early for me to tell, but there are good/evil choices. Without getting spoilery, there is a quest given you by a man in charge of a town that asks you to find the town's warden, who went off to investigate why giant spiders were attacking the town. When you're talking to him he gives you the "wink" indicating it would be better if you didn't find him, basically hinting, even if you did find him, you should kill him, so this guy won't lose the power he has gained in this town since the crisis started, and he would reward you handsomely. Your choice, when you do find the guy, is to eiter kill him, or tell him about this other guy's treachery. I don't know, as I haven't gotten further into the game than that, but someone on the Amalur forum said your choice here does affect something further into the game. I don't know if that is true, or if it is true, how often and how large the consequences are for this kind of choice comes up, so...

That style would svck in Skyrim, but KoA is not even trying to be realistic. it really goes for the high-fantasy stuff, in more things than just the graphics.

I'm trying to find games to scraqe together to trade in. I still need to finish the Skyrim MQ. Once that's done I'll give this a shot. 2 more questions...

Are there shields in the game?

How is magic? Does it work well?

Yes, but shield only fills in a block/parry function in the game. It's only a move for you to counter against attacks, nothing like in Skyrim which you can shield charge or stuff. Think of it as block function in Darksider, which a timed block could lead to follow up effects and attacks.

Magic is mostly just like other trigger skills in the game, only it draws your mana pool and has greater range. They are quite powerful if you hit the right key. Sceptres are like hand cannons that burn mana, low impact but can fire like assault rifle delivery extra effects.

I'm an Almain who mixes both physical and magical attacks. Typically I use a longsword and chakrams, while mixing in plenty of magical attacks.
