Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Thread #6

The world is just beautiful.

Look up down and around and the world is just gorgeous.

It's the same feeling you got as you wandered the roads of Morrowind gaping at giant mushrooms.

Get your character to approach the Arch leading to the House of Ballands and make them face the camera and you've got a Kodak Moment (this game is full of them).

I'm like a kid in a candy shop.

Agreed. This game pushes art design further than any game I have seen in a long time.

Yay, verily tis good like thee festival of frothy mugament :foodndrink:

Kingdoms Of Amalur has a strong magical ambience to it where everything is dreamlike til a monster or enemy appears then it becomes glass house shattering nightmarish. One of the most bueitful colorful rpgs i have seen in probably ages. Whenever i see the blood flying during combat it has me pausing in stunned surprise for a second because its so shocking (in a good way) to see it in such a gorgeous world. Its like seeing it in real life which one just doesnt see all the time.

Voice acting is also very good fitting into the game world perfectly and never seeming out of place. The writing in the books etc is starting to grow on me and doesnt seem odd anymore as it jives with everything else that is going on.

Love blacksmithing and repair kits. Looking forward to trying some alchemy down the road.

Boy them sound effects for the humongous wooden gate doors sure have some thump on my bookshelf speakers. Its like actually being there hearing the gears moving and then the thump of the huge doors opening.

Cant say enough good things about the music. It just adds a sparkle or mysterious veal over the moment as am exploring the Kingdoms Of Amalur. Real fortunate to have have two rpg works of art like Kingdoms Of Amalur and Skyrim alive with such immersive breath taking music.

Decided to get this since everyone is seeming to enjoy it and it's gotten good reviews. I'm apparently doing something wrong. I made a character and my game freezes up every time I try to do something. I pressed "f" to pick up a note at the start and it sat loading for about 7 minutes before I had to Alt F4. Went back and went to continue only for it to spend 15 minutes loading, Alt F4 again, then I made a new character then pulled up the menu only for it to do the same thing.... About to go back and try to load my game again.

Well, think I have seen every loading screen tool tip now multiple times. I guess I will make a third character.

Game just froze again picking up the "Disposal note" or any action with F, or any menu option. Oh well gave it a shot back to League of Legends.

What i did when i got a freeze during certain situations is by trail and error guessing i finally switched the option for sprinting from "hold" to "press" in the options menu which for some strange reason got rid of the freezing. Seeing how the menu would act odd at times i took a hunch it might have been related to something there and from the looks of it i was correct without suffering a freeze since.

Nah, clicking any option in the menu causing it to just load until I have to force it to close. I'm done with it for now.

Sorry to hear about that. You might wanna try updating your video drivers and codecs when your in the mood to hunt down the problem. I use the K-lite Codec Pack Full which fixed some major freezing problems i used to have with other games.

If its on steam verify integrity of game cache. In the steam menu right click on the game and then propeties. Then local files tab. It should be there.

So, is it anything like the Elder Scrolls?

1. First/third person perspective?
2. Lots of content in terms of loot?
3. Open world?
4. Character creator?
5. Lots, or at the very least, more sidequests than Fallout 3 ('cause F3 had quite few)?
6. Direct control of attacking (no Dragon Age: Origins bullcrap)?

Answers after the spoiler:

Spoiler

1. Third person yes, no first as far as I know (although you can "get a better look" by slightly zooming in with a button press)
2. Mostly weapons, armor, and potions, though there are other items like alchemical ingredients, books (TES-style), blacksmithing tools, shards for gem-making
3. Basically open-world, not in a TES way (as in one big map with lots of dungeons). More like a bunch of medium-big maps, plenty of linear dungeons. It's big, is what I'm trying to say.
4. Yes.
5. Plenty of sidequests. Faction quests, random sidequests - lots to do.
6. Yes. Think like a more extensive Fable, or Darksiders, or something to that effect.

I'm playing as a Dokkalfar rogue (Assassin at the moment). I'm really enjoying it, finished House of Ballads a few days ago, and that basically blew me away. Really stunning game. I actually can't wait to start over and make a new character that uses Might or Magic attributes; I'd like to put some points into the wizardy-category for the short-range poison teleport, but eh, I'm having fun as a pure rogue.

I like how KoA gives each class three choices for the weapons as well... gives the game a nice versatile feel to it.

The 70-point trap move for Finesse, by the way, is ridiculously powerful. I think I've got it to level 3, and I literally annihilated a Crudok without even engaging at close range... simply majestic.

Wow.

In "Bloodmoon" and "Skyrim" I came accross humans enchanted with the power to become wolves.

In "Kingdoms of Amalur" I've come accross some poor guy who used to be a wolf until a bunch of Sprites turned him into a human for a laugh.

Sure it might technically boil down to a "fetch quest" but with that sort of witty writing behind it even the mundane side quests are a pleasure to complete...

To the point that you'll almost completely forget about the Main Quest.

What a treat.

No, it's not like the Elder Scrolls. Thus far it seems to be a lovely RPG, very pretty art design/direction. The combat thus far is fun, and if you are a loot scavenger like me, it will certainly satisfy that particular penchant. The writing seems good enough, but it is not blowing me away or anything.

1. Third person
2. Lots of loot
3. Not open world - though they give a good try to make it like that. But if I stopped at every edge and unable to jump down to anything, if the world design has impassable hills, rocks everywhere, then it is very clear they are keeping you within a certain area. In the context of the game I mostly don't have a problem with it - it doesn't bother me in other games like DAO or Witcher etc. either. Although the ridiculous inability to jump over the smallest obstacle is pretty maddening.
4. Yes(ish) - not super extensive, but I liked the look of my character.
5. Seems to be a fair amount of side quests actually.
6. Not sure what you mean - I was able to directly control not only my character but my party members in DAO, so I never had a problem with that combat system. In this game, it does auto-target, though you can switch with mouse movement to another target. It's fine, hasn't caused me any frustration other than occasionally what I want to target is not what the game wants to target.

If that sounds somewhat low-key, I should clarify that I like games like this, I am happy to see a studio develop a new IP and an RPG and I am enjoying the game. It's not blowing me away like, say DAO or the first Witcher, in terms of RPG gameplay, engrossing story or anything.

Oh yeah there's also some similar nice stories when you headed south. Collect the lorestones, they are like retelling of Celtic folklores. Very touchie.

This is the only thing that's really turning me off from the game. To high fantasy and oversized weapons for me but everything else sounds great.
I can accept oversize weapons & armor on the premise that they are not conventional and (probably) don't weigh the same as steel; I would not accept 'non-magical' swords that are 70" long and 14" wide or pauldrons the size of sheep.

I liked the art, but not the color palette or magical effect graphics. The demo dungeon that I recall... (The one with the smugglers?) was fairly tame and had a hokey exit ten feet above the same door you went in through; so you had to trek through the whole map again instead of use the exit 10 ' away. They could have simply made it an adjacent door to be unlocked from within.

I'm about 90% in to DL'ing the demo. I will know soon enough if this is a game worth buying. What race are guys? I'm liking the look of those blue elves...

I think I am Dokkalfar... which would be the blue-ish elf...I think. She looks not dissimilar to one of my Oblivion characters from years back. I didn't find the four races that unusual that I would prefer one over the other.

That's the dark elf. Ljosalfar is the bluish "moon elf".

I also chose Dokkalfar. Or however it's spelt. I'm on hold on my playthrough though. ME1 needs to be played again and ME2 in preparation for ME3.

So I played through part of the demo. I made a blue elf and his name is Eddard. Because they're northmen I thought I'd base him off Ned stark from Song of ice and fire. :)

I had a good time. I thought the combat was smooth and really enjoyable. I don't like the fact that you can't just press a button and wield your weapon. It automatically sheathes, which can be annoying. I also found I'd go for an attack and miss completely sometimes. The aiming was a little off. I hear it's just an early build and I will definitely be getting it...

Not quite get it, you cannot really "miss". The hit is not determined by dice roll, when your weapons are in range, pressing the button connects the hit unless you were interrupted somehow. The aiming is not FPS so I have no complaint with that.
