Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Thread #6

Not quite get it, you cannot really "miss". The hit is not determined by dice roll, when your weapons are in range, pressing the button connects the hit unless you were interrupted somehow. The aiming is not FPS so I have no complaint with that.

I know that, I think I just need some more practice. I would sometimes go for an attack, feel like I'd aimed it right and just miss completely.

or someone could simply give me their opinion right now instead of me reading two threads for hours lol...

Ok in short. It's an open world ACTION rpg with some questlines for you to persuit, similar to Skyrim. The story so far is ok, but what I like most are the mini tales you can find in the world from the lorestones. The art style is a lot similar to Fable and the combat has been so far adequately tense under some encounters, but you have to put it on hard mode to make it fun. The game emphasises a lot in combat, but the stories, factions and interactions although sparse, they are quite enjoyable.

I know that, I think I just need some more practice. I would sometimes go for an attack, feel like I'd aimed it right and just miss completely.

haha, noob :P

The character creator may not be extensive, but the beards and hairstyles are much better than Skyrim's and they actually look attached to the character's head. If anything, the faces remind me of the The Sims 3

Finished the main quest. It was interesting, to say the least. Now, to do some side quests!

The other two playable races, besides Ljolsafar and Dokkalfar, are Varani (pseudo-Norse sea-faring humans), and As-something (which are the tan/religious race of men).

Is it just me, or do most female Dokkalfar have very... cleavagey wardrobes?

Story ?/10
Combat ?/10
Setting ?/10
Interface ?/10
Bugs and glithces ?/10 (10 meaning next to no bugs, Skyrim would get like a 4 on this)
Interactions ?/10
Impact via choices ?/10

Could some people fill in the ? with numbers for me? Just curious. I am on the fence for this game.

Not big fan of number's but I'll try.

Story 7/10
Combat 10/10
Setting 8/10 (but you shouldn't be expecting a realistic setting)
Interface on the PC 1/10 on a console idk/10
Bugs and glithces 0/10
Interactions 1/10
Impact via choices 1/10

Judging from the above, one might say I'm solely playing this game for the combat and the loot lust. I also seem to like the look of the equipment and the character creator was a welcome addition, as dolls are passe.

There is a community FOV fix out right now to the game. Makes the view much better on the PC version. I am starting to play at FOV 80.

Those numbers don't really make any sense. If you give it a 0/10 in bugs and glitches the game would be unplayable. Even a Bethesda game on release doesn't warrant a 0 in that category. The others parts that you gave 1's to well just seems like bit of an overstatement.

KoA was nowhere on my radar, but ME3 was, so interesting marketing by EA. I am considering it, and watched a few videos. I am wondering if the game utilizes permanent companions to any extent. There seem to be some who may participate in a quest, but are there any permanent companions? A lot of the style also reminds me of DA2, so wondering if there is a party based control aspect when fighting with allies? Dare I ask it for fear of being criticised.... any romance? (Not six/marriage, but simple acknowledgement of the difference between races, species and sixes among the npc's?)
A. No permanent companions, only a few who will come with you on certain quests.
B. No control of others when they do come with you, you control only yourself.
C. No romance.

6. Not sure what you mean - I was able to directly control not only my character but my party members in DAO, so I never had a problem with that combat system. In this game, it does auto-target, though you can switch with mouse movement to another target. It's fine, hasn't caused me any frustration other than occasionally what I want to target is not what the game wants to target.
Dragon Age: Origins on console... All I had to do was to draw my weapon, attacks were automatically dispensed, just had to choose powers and such. That's what I meant. I decide when the sword is swung?

is this game extremely linear like a Zelda game or more open ended like a TES game? does the game end once you finish the MQ? can you continue playing after beating it, or is the story "over" once you're done?

The game is rather open. The world itself is broken up into large areas, all connected to each other. The world isn't seamless, but the areas themselves are rather vast, and offer a lot in terms of exploration. There are normally only one or two paths in and out of any area, so it's linear in that sense, but I would by no means call it a linear game.

Haven't beat the game yet, but it seems you can go back and take on any of the side content after completing the main quest.

The game is so large you're going to have to score each section out of 15.

The story is brilliant but if you don't want to be bogged down with dialogue (and there's a lot of dialogue) then you can simply quizz NPC's about quest relevant data only.

Combat is fluid, expansive and awesome.

If you've been raging because you put all your perks into "One Handed" but secretly wish you have put them into "Archery" or "Sneak" visiting a Fate Weaver will allow you to completely re-spec your character.

Setting is one of the most beautiful landscapes you've seen in a video game.

Interface is fairly unobtrusive and easy to manage. Minimap can be confusing at times but you'll work it out without too much trouble.

There are few bugs. I've heard of some people who had trouble with the "Plague Cure" quest but that's the only potential glitch I've heard of (and I've personally completed this quest without any trouble).

Interactions are handled well. I love that the interaction scenes will include your character wearing all the gear you've equipped them with.

Impact via choices?

That's supposed to be there but to be honest I'm 14 hours into a potentially 100+ hour game.

For that reason I wouldn't invest too much merit in anyone offering "final scores".

Thank you for response. I value opinions of TES gamers over general reviews. Also, I play on 360 and have several friends who have perfect scores (Oblivion 1250/1250 & Skyrim 1000/1000) who are playing KoA and provided postitive feedback. I queried another friend who was online playing Skyrim daily, but put it aside to play this. He claimed he liked it better, but is a fan of the combat specifically. I am enjoying youtube videos of it, but I think I prefer the more rounded experience Skyrim provides and will try to complete it, before delving into ME3.

This game is awesome, says the former sceptic.

I don't want to write a whole review, and I don't want to dissect the hows and whys, but this thought flitted across my consciousness while I was playing this game and it's stuck with me: KoA is a better game than Skyrim is.

Now that I've played a game -- and this is the first game I've played in a while, so forgive me for my previous misapprehension -- I understand what people mean when they say that Skyrim is a hiking simulator.

This game is fun. I'll have to contradict some reviewers here:
  • Story: 4/5. Far from being bland, the stories have just enough nuance and eccentricity to keep you interested. They have the quirkiness of a JRPG, with little to none of the stupidity.
  • World: 3/5. Okay, so it's a bit worn. All the standard tropes are there. But there are also interesting or at least unusual monsters and plants. And what about those talking stones, eh?
  • Combat: 5/5. The combat manages to mash number logic and arcadery skill into something that is incredibly fun to take part in.
  • Non-combat: 2/5. Easily the weakest part of the game. There's too much going on, it's not explained well, and it devolves way too easily into grind.
  • Cohesion: 4/5. It's clear this was made by people who know and love fantasy and fantasy games. This project was well managed and fits very snuggly together. If the intent was to display as much of the good of this genre as possible -- and it's clear this was the game's purpose -- the team's succeeded admirably.
Overall? 4/5!

It deserves your time and attention. Play it now!

Caveat: this does not necessarily mean buy it. If you hate EA and all it stands for, find (or get? hehe) a friend who has it and enjoy it that way, instead. (What I did.) If you don't hate EA and all it stands for, or if you think supporting a new developer outweighs the evil of giving EA money, go ahead and buy the game.

Loving the game so far now that it works. Playing a full on greatsword wielding warrior but I am going to start a mage soon. This game to me feels like what I imagined when I first read about Fable in Game Informer when it had the cover and the huge article.

Or buy it from Steam. That is 38 Studios own published version, EA is not at all involved.

Once you finish the MQ, you can go back and do any side quests you might have missed, there is also some new quests that you can only access AFTER you finish the MQ.

Ok I just finished my version of house Ballad

Spoiler

I sang along with the Ballad, but at the end I chose to rule with Windemere, just love cold winter women :P
The change is not much, only a new achievement and Wecen became Windemere.

That combat was damn hard, one misstep and it's a chain attacks to death, reloaded like 20 times and popped all my pots, I can't imagine the difficulty of the last battle lol

Yeah, I did that battle late Sunday. I am playing on PC and my mouse hand was cramped by the end of it, and I think I was holding my breath for half the fight, trying to burst speed out of range. I made the opposite decision.

It's a charming game, I think. I am enjoying it but it's not grabbing me like a Dragon Age Origins, or The Witcher story does. What I do like about it is the loot, the combat is pretty fun - playing a mage with chakrams and having gotten a couple badass power moves now, it's pretty good. Their boss fights leave something to be desired, just cannon fodder mobs tossed at you while the boss tries to stay out of range and just slam you. And I question a combat that has multiple mobs able to chain stun or interrupt the player, which is merely frustrating, not fun.

I just wrapped up things in The Sidhe, so will be heading out in the world. I was doing a lot of side quests initially, but now I probably will just go for the through line of the main quest. The side content isn't grabbing me much and since I can't abandon quests, I have a ton of crap stuck in my log. :(

The easy factor is really starting to set in . . .

Really the only gripe I have with the same, outside of the less than stellar inventory system anyway.

Here is to hoping for that rumored harder difficulty. Would definitely make for a more interesting second playthrough.
