I should try and learn it again. Also want to know some words in diffferent European languages because I want to visit some places and it would be useful to actualy know some of their language.

Nonsense. You just need to speak English sufficiently loudly and slowly to make yourself heard. :hehe:

It's pretty much a given that I know English
For foreign languages, I only know little bits and pieces of Ancient Latin and German (having taken both respectively in high school and college...and was lousy with both)

Would be nice to learn some Japanese, though.

Sadly I am only fluent in Dutch and English, and I have some rudimentary knowledge of German as well. Plus some really basic skills in French and Latin that barely deserve mentioning. I'd like to become fluent in German, Swedish, Finnish and Russian, all of which I find to be fantastic languages. I doubt that will ever happen though.

Im guessing your Finnish. Why learn Spanish ? Dosent seem like it would be very practical.

Also suprised at so many people saying Japanese, unless you intend to (or already have) visit(ed) Japan I dont see a need. Anime has subs, I assume most manga is translated. So why is it so popular ? Or are lots of people planning on visiting Japan ?

こんにちは!

Step 1: Get the http://www.google.com/intl/ja/ime/ so you can write japanese on your non-japanese keyboard like I just did ^
Step 2: Sign up for http://www.textfugu.com/ (check out their http://www.textfugu.com/free-lessons/)
Step 3: Follow their lessons to the letter

do those three steps and in a few months you'll be able to read and write hiragana and katakana and you'll have a pretty good vocabulary to continue learning japanese

Here in the southeast corner there are a lot, and i do mean A LOT of russian tourists and residents (that is why this 10.000 people town has half a dozen malls :lmao:), and as such being able to speak russian would look really good on a resume. It isn't that much help on other parts of the country, on the west coast it would be useless, whereas swedish would be pretty much required.

Yes, I'm Finnish. I've lived in California for a considerable part of my life, though, and began Spanish lessons there, where the language is spoken more. Spanish courses were offered at the Finnish school I started attending once I moved back to Finland, so I continued with it.

This is true here in the Helsinki area as well, although to a lesser extent. Swedish is more commonly used than Russian (and is essentially a requirement for a lot of jobs), but we get loads of Russian tourists as well. :P And Japanese tourists. Which is a bit odd.

Languages I know:

American English (obviously :P)
Spanish (tiny bit)

Languages I would like to know:

Japanese
Chinese

Personally I would really like to learn Japanese not just hearing but reading it however it's just a real PITA from what i've seen. The Kanji symbols can be hard as heck to read having different meaning when putting them together. Only Japanese that I even remotely know is what I learned through anime which is kind of sad. Mostly know words for cute, stupid, and dog so i'm in pretty sorry shape if I travel to Japan.

Languages:
- Norwegian (which automatically gives us a understanding of swedish and danish aswell).
- English
- I had Spanish for 6 years in school, but I would still consider myself an absolute beginner at it as I never was enthusiastic towards learning it.

Want to learn:
- German
- Turkish
- Arabian

Thats the point. If I moved to another country I should learn their languange instead of having them learn mine. My school had quite a lot of Polish people, dosent mean we should learn Polish because of that.

Part of me thinks you shouldnt need to learn Swedish either, its Finland after all. But iirc Finlnd used to be part of Sweden (no offense if I have this wrong) which explains the amount of people who know Swedish. Infact I swear I heared more people spoke Swedish than Finnish. Not sure. S
